While Empire was easily the best of the 3, ANH and RotJ both have better third acts.
ANH is probably the most famous third act of all time.
Empire has always been the popular choice as being everyone's favorite but to be honest I enjoy Return of the Jedi just a little bit more. While perhaps not as consistent as Empire, Jedi to me had more "wow" moments when I first saw it in theaters...
1.) Seeing Jabba the Hut for the first time.
2.) The rancor scene
3.) Seeing Luke's green lightsaber ignite for the first time.
4.) The death scene of Yoda
5.) The reveal of Luke and Leia being twin siblings.
6.) The speeder bike chase.
7.) The amazing space battle
8.) All of the scenes with Luke, Vader, and the emperor.
9.) Vader's redemption.
10.) Vader's death.
ROTJ is hard to evaluate. The best parts were awesome and the bad parts took up too much screen time. I loved every part of the scenes at Jabba's Palace. The Max Rebo Band, the guards, Leia's slave outfit and as you mentioned, the Rancor... I also loved the showdown at the pit in the Dune Sea.
However, the Ewoks were just a little too much help against the Empire and destroying another Death Star not only seemed redundant but even easier since it was under construction.
...though as far as Vader's redemption and death - for a series that was often clunky with it's dialogue, when Luke tells Vader, "I can still save you." and a helmet-less Vader responds ."You already have." just before he dies...well, that is still my favorite moment in all of the Star Wars movies.
The Hobbits were just a little too much help in destroying Sauron..I think that idea, that the greatest help can come from a completely overlooked source, is what Lucas was aiming at. I know that was completely Tolkiens point. The Ewoks were just a little too teddy bearish for everybody.
Not everybody hated Ewoks at the time. The masses didn't start hating on the Ewoks until much much later. As someone who was about 6 years old when RotJ came out I loved them and so did my friends at the time. They were mega popular. That's why they spawned a cartoon and 2 TV movies.
It wasn't until I was a teenager that I started thinking "y'know, the Ewoks are kinda dumb." Now, as an adult, I just kinda accept them for what they are, dumbed down Wookiees.
I also think the Ewoks would benefit by today's FX. Instead of looking like little people in teddy bear costumes that restricts their movements, imagine them being a little more agile and quicker.
Anyway... point is Ewoks were never universally reviled like Jar Jar was.

I know I've said it before, but people have an issue with retroactively hating Star Wars movies more than any film/franchise I've ever seen.
Great movies and in this case - an industry altering series of movies, will inspire close scrutiny especially from younger viewers who weren't around for the initial run and are either curious over what the fuss is all about or just want to feel smarter than their parents... There is actually an entire blog dedicated to 'Star Wars goofs' and you would be amazed how much of it is dedicated just to debating whether or not Han Solo's line about the Falcon making the Kessell Run in less than 12 parsecs is a goof (a parsec is a unit of distance after all).
Ironically, Episode 1 IMO has aged better than 2 and 3. Of the 3 prequels, its the only one that feels like a Star Wars movie to me. Plus it benefits from not having Hayden Christiansen.
I'll agree with part of it, because in some ways it feels more like a SW film to me because of the 3 prequels, this used the least amount of CGI and used more real sets.
But Jar Jar and Jake Lloyd are so bad in it, it still makes it worse than the other 2 for me. Though only very slightly than Attack of the Clones.
Jar Jar I understand but I thought Jake Lloyd was fine. Nothing Oscar worthy but I never thought he was part of the issue with TPM.
I really enjoyed this movie and I liked that they went with a more serious and dark tone. It gives me hope that they might make a sith movie down the road. I would really like a Darth Bane movie, but really any sith film would be pretty awesome.
I think it's one the worst child performances in a major movie I've seen. I don't blame him because he was directed to be that way and he didn't write the lines he spoke but it was pretty bad.
