Star Watching (merged)

I think I have a pretty firm grasp on the distinction.

I have optimism about this staff, there are plenty of reasons to be positive. Blind faith is another thing entirely.

I seriously doubt it as you continue to characterize people that disagree with you in that manner (and have for a while).

So was last year.

Two year 1s in a rebuilding process in 2 years doesn't exactly get recruits chomping at the bit to join in.

Kiffin had the luxury of being THE change, THE shot in the arm for the program. That approach helped him tremendously....for Dooley, it's just watered down.

Only 4 of our 11 commitments are linemen.

I meant they were right on with the star count.....should have proof read before hitting the send button....leave it to you to find it....tell me what is it like being on "Suicide Watch" your whole life man.....you seem like the most negative person in the world on this board....can't imagine what you are like in person....hope you have Prozac, Fluoxetine, or some other type of make you smile pill dude.

Where was Tyler Bray at this time last year?? What about Michael Taylor??

I think the ending is MUCH more important than the beginning. Remember, we were sitting here last year having the same conversation saying that the guys committing to us were the diamonds in the rough. Now, we are sitting here arguing/observing the same concept we were all OK with last year at this point, but yet people are discounting this staff's ability in July/August, no referring to you BTW. I just find it comical that stars can be argued in July/August right now. You never know what will happen closer to NSD, and in-home visits taking place. We all saw what Dooley could do in-home last year.

Yep, I remember. Way to early to be worrying about this, let's worry about it in December and January if there is any need.

Nor were we when we were taking Janzen Jackson from LSU, or Marsalis Teague from Florida, or JaWuan James from Alabama, etc...

James committed in November after the coaches had been in Knoxville for a year. Jackson and Teague committed in February. Give it time.

So was last year.

Thank Lane. It's the reality of where we are at now. I hate it too becuase we polly wouldve signed a top 3 class with X...but we have Dooley now and cant look back. I feel good about our new staff addressing needs and building a solid foundation for the future. Gotta crawl before you walk, walk before you run...and I think we are still in the crawling stage thanks to X.

You know as well as I do why we got Rogers and Hunter...and Stone wasn't committed anywhere

Yea, take away from what Dooley did. That's fine. Fact is he signed those 3 AFTER Kiffin left. Spin it however best fits your opinion, but those are FACTS.

Why did we get Rogers and Hunter?

Because Dooley sold them on UT even after Kiffin and crew jumped ship.

Hunter's mom talked glowingly about Dooley's in-home visit.

"When Coach Dooley came to our house on his second day as Head Coach, I knew that man was for real. I knew he would make sure Justin would be at his best academically, and I just felt and electricity that I hadn't felt before."

Nobodies is a bit strong. We're getting respectable football players and most schools would be more than ecstatic to have them, but we are competing head to head with the two top programs in the country (for the moment) and probably 4 or 5 of the top 10-12 in the country.

If they're not nobodies, they are definitely borderline. But so were plenty of people out of high school that turned out to be great. I'm not using it in a bad way. But the OP seems to have a problem with what we've essentially recruited so far--unknowns. Regardless, I should've clarified that I sincerely think these guys will turn out to be great football players. It takes a lot of resources to properly evaluate talent.

But, back to my point. Look at our offer lists. I'll use the DTs we've offered as an example. Out of the 20 offered (I'm assuming significantly less than last year), 7 are four stars. The other 13 are three stars or below. I'm not saying that's a good or bad thing. But it's almost common sense. When you offer these kids that aren't getting a lot of attention--for whatever reason--they'll commit fairly quickly. All big names are going to wait it out for awhile anyway. We were in with a lot of big names last year because we handed out offers like they were going out of style, while recruiting nationally. It doesn't seem like we're doing a lot of that this year. We don't have our hand in that many areas. And I'm comfortable with that.

Plus, yeah, we've won 57% of our games the past five years. That doesn't help.

JaWuan technically wasn't committed anywhere either. He played the recruiting game after he de-committed. It's not like he spurned Bama directly for UT.

As for Janzen, how are you going to not credit Dooley for stealing Hunter & Rogers, when Kiffin clearly got Janzen because of Orgeron's connections to his dad. Teague could be argued too as it's been said he wanted to stay in state the whole time but didn't like the Fulmer situation.

It's funny, because I remember a bunch of people saying Hunter was coming to Tennessee the whole time and that he was going to be Kiffin's NSD surprise, and I'm about 90% sure that one of those people was you...

Why did we get Rogers and Hunter?

Those still hanging onto Kiffin believe it is because he's so great kids commit to schools just because he was recently the coach there. These recruits apparently don't care who the current coach is... just the fact that CLK used to be there means it must be great.

Taking a healthy look at an offer list and calling it what it is is not star-watching.

I'm real happy that some of you guys are fine with mediocrity. That's great for you, but I want to beat Alabama so bad my blood boils. It's the competitive fire that makes us "fans" and makes this fun. Without it, what's the point??

I like that comeback... Made me change my mind.

D#@! it, WHERE ARE THE 5 STARS???!!!!!!!!!

Or because we offered Nash Nance...but I wouldn't want to stop you when you're on a roll like this, so please continue...
