Star Worshipping

All this "star" talk drives me INSANE. Does it drive anyone else crazy? In my opinion it is the biggest waste of time and discussion. How many 5 star kigs flopped? How many 2 and 3 star kids rise to the top. I think this Croweder kid looks great. Who gives a damn about his "star" power. Remember Bubba Miller? Also, was expected to be marginally good at best and also turned down Vandy for us. I remember one year at Dudley some local jokal Vandy turd of a fan was screaming at Bubba Miller, he wasn't smart enough for Vandy. Anyway Bubba was one of my favorites and went to play NFL (Eagles). All that blocking for #25. I'm ranting hear but my wish is that we would all collectively stop talking about all this "star" crap and trust just a little bit. Who cares what Rivals, Scout and ESPN rate their players? Its not like they go watch and evaluate in person. They have connections with certain coaches and camps, that's all. You knowledge and mine are probably just as credible. I know this topic comes up daily and another wish of mine is to take down any future posting about a kids "star" rating immediately.

I like the star ratings just for getting an idea of how good the athletes are suppose to be. You're right about consistency in evaluations. They do seem to line up with team's success at winning the big one though.

You go, stars don't mean much now, wait till December. It's all just someones opinion anyways, (the squeaky wheel gets the grease) the players with the most exposure get the most stars. So the players without all the exposure don't get the star cred. Quit whining, you star freaks are giving me a headache.

There are too many intangibles that the all powerful stars don't cover and can't expand upon to be covered. (Character, Tenacity, Will power, Drive, Mental toughness, etc.) Stars right now are about as relevant as sheets of toilet paper, go to the bathroom and give one to whomever you want.

No, you just take no approach and fall into line with all the others jumping on people that they feel to be wrong. I've been around a long time on here my friend, and this place has evolved from being a good conversation based place, right or wrong, to a daily pissing contest between those who actually stick their neck out with an opinion, right or wrong, and those who just want to try and take everyone down. So, please don't stop, or then all the people you look up to on here will start attacking you for having an opinion.
Wow chill out man!

The bottom line is this..listen up now you might learn something. The top level recruits have lots and lots of options from Big time Schools without question marks at the coaching position. Even if they like everything about tennessee Why would they commit to Tennessee before even seeing what Dooley can do on the field? They probably wont do that. Dooley has gotten alot of upper tier 3 star prospects. As the season unfolds and february approaches we will have plenty of big time players.

And?? He's one of the exceptions to the rule or recruiting services. He's a bust, so move on. BTW, I bet if I dug up one of your posts from back then, I would say you would have been riding that train too.

I see how things work around here now. I move on from things I say and change my thoughts and mind just like the rest of the world, but yet people around here still want to point out I was wrong. Wow, big freaking deal someone was wrong on a message board!! You want a freaking pat on the back?? Some kind of merit badge for pointing it out??

I'm not faulting you here man, just don't get into the mode where you want to be like every other jackhole on this site and do that crap. If you want me to say I am wrong, fine, just don't be an ass about it.

Everyone thought Chris Donald was going to be a beast. An epic bust, the next Al Wilson?! He couldn't ever hold al's jock strap.

Listening to Rivals this morning was kinda depressing, when they were going down the list of top prospects UT was never mentioned. Heck Clemson and USCjr were in on most of them but not a word about the Vols. Star gazer or not it's a fact the teams loaded with the 4 and 5* guys win the champonships.

what if half of these 3* turns out to be 4* will that be good enough for most people ? or will you be disappointed because they didnt go from 3 to 5*

Nah. That will make them nouveau riche... and besides, they still won't have the blessing of Kiffin or O.

I may be incorrect. I'm certain if I am I will be reprimanded quickly. These kids have earned their star rating based upon camps and how they have performed their Jr seasons. Can the ratings of some of these 3 star rated players change to a 4 or 5 star if they have a lights out Sr campaign?

I for one am not overly concerned w/ ratings. I trust a coaches evaluation over a scouting service. I have seen my share of 4 & 5 star players turn out to be total busts. I have also witnessed a 3 star player blossum to a major contributer.

The Rivals ratings came out in June and were based on data gathered before this summer's camps. Rivals has given around 150 less 4-5* ratings thus far than last year.

Some of UT's commits are good candidates to move up. Some are very good prospects IMO but won't.

Most recently, the 2009 Heisman winner comes to mind.

I can't believe this thread has made it to 13 pages. This debate and all the arguments have already been stated in just about every recruit's thread. Everyone has the right to their own opinion. Some people know more about recruiting and its impact than others. There is no concrete answer on how recruiting should be, all coaches have their own way. But even people that don't know that much about recruiting cannot deny that if you have more 4 and 5*, you have a better chance of winning. The proof is in the pudding. Look at eric's post on page 1.

I just can't stand the people who are consistently negative about our recruiting, no names needed, they know who they are.

That was well done. That isn't all inclusive is it? You just included the SEC and other notables, right?

So the national champion, national runner-up, SEC champion, SEC runner-up, Big Ten champion, and Big 12 champion all have >42% of their rosters made up of 4 and 5 star players.

So do 9 teams with at least 4 losses.

The point I've been making all along has been proven. The teams that have been winning championships have been the same ones consistently at the top of the recruiting rankings.

Gee...what did football teams ever do before "star systems" were created? According to many posters, they could not play football and win championships back then.

Talent is relative. All football players have talent. Some more than others. It all comes down to how players develop their potential, exceed potential, how well they take coaching, how well they are utilized by the coaches, and how well they perform.

Stars are just for people who do not truly understand the game and gives them something to talk about.
