Stokes dropping out?

One other thing that makes me think he's returning is that their has been no recruiting of big guys that I've heard for 2013 class. Josh Davis would be ideal to replace Stokes, but we haven't even made contact last I heard so that doesn't appear likeky.

Then again I keep reminding myself I'm a Tennessee fan and somehow good things don't happen for us...next year is supposed to be the perfect storm, only fitting something would happen to screw that up.

Its funny that you mention that, because I heard this weekend that the coaches are going to start looking for a JUCO big man.

Agree 100%, but wonder if the school would be subject to a potential lawsuit if the player wasnt allowed to use the bball facilities.? I would think his contract/scholarship is good through the end of the semester, whether he ever attends another class or not.

This is correct.

I doubt there are any legal implications. Coaches suspend players from all team activities and ban them from facilities with regularity. Any legal issue available would have been brought up in those cases too at some point, I'd think.

Well after review, I guess hurting the schools APR could be considered violating a team rule. Then I see your point.

May not be a legal issue, but I am pretty sure that in most cases they are still allowed to use the facilities, just not with the team. Also cant use managers to rebound, strength coaches, etc. They are on thier own.

I would think dropping out of school would void any scholarship rights they get but I don't know for sure.

From the same people who gave me a brief rundown of the Stokes situation. No link, just mentioned in passing. Again, Im sure all this will come out in a couple of days when the coaches get back.

If he is still going to class like you said, he hasnt dropped out of school.

Right...was speaking hypothetical. If he's attending classes but going pro he'd still be allowed to use facilities, trainers etc. if he's not using trainers, managers or Pratt then maybe he has dropped out...

Would have to think that'd be out there by now though...

Jarnell was in Econ class today and stayed after asking the professor for help. I think the guy is alright and this is overblown.

Sure, he may be allowed to use them, but he has no*legal right to use them. If Martin feels his presence is a distraction, if he's not going to class, etc., I could see him being banned. Bad PR move IMO to do it unless it was really in the best interest of the team. If that were the case, I could see no reason for him to even want to hang around campus.

These people that are on the staff? What is it they said about Stokes, you never did really say?

Other than his girlfriend, I agree. I dont think he has been completely banned from Pratt though.

To me, all this stuff just looks like Stokes was given some time to "get his mind right". Im sure something has happened, but they are keeping it pretty close to the vest. Everything I have heard has been pretty vague.

Thanks for the info, was surprised we hadn't had any of his classmates posting yet...matches what I've heard, keeping my fingers crossed.

Players are suspended all the time for missing class. Being out of season doesn't change that.

The staff definitely trolls these sights, and this would be a prime thread to troll. Martin and his staff keep everything in house, way better than Pearl. Not much really good stuff gets out. Like I said, everything I heard was vague, and has been said on here already.

Don't know this 100%, but I have a feeling if stokes wasn't attending classes and was destroying UTBB APR which could cause Martin a chance to get his team in the NCAA he wouldn't be allowed to use those state of the art facilities anymore...just a feeling.

I disagree the hit on the APR is bad enough but banning him from the facilities would be a very bad PR move especially in the city of Memphis.

I heard that on the radio as well and that was before all of this was posted.....Hopefully stokes decides to stay on another yr.

If you let it known that Stokes isn't attending classes and has essentially dropped out of school I don't think it'd be that bad of a PR move, may actually draw some compliments abs praise. However, I don't think it'll come to that, he's still in school and likeky will finish the year even if he declares...and if he declares and drops out he will probably go somewhere to train not stick around Memphis.

"They have to make a decision by April 16 according to NCAA rules so we will know in the next few days.*

I haven't heard anything that makes me think either is leaving. As I've said all along, if Stokes gets any kind of legitimate encouragement that he'd be drafted, I think he would bolt in a heartbeat, but I don't think any good advice he gets is going to tell him to leave."

On why Jarnell will leave if he can...

"It is not an indication that he does not enjoy playing for Martin. It is not an indication that he isn't enjoying his college experience.

In my experience the overwhelming majority of high profile recruits have the NBA as their priority/goal/dream, not being a college player. Jarnell falls squarely into the camp IMO.*"
