Stop with the complaining over 3* recruits

Weve got Mays and Taylor for 2018. Both top 100 players.
That could change, but 2017 could too. I wasn't very impressed 2016
Instate talent. We didnt miss too much there.

As for 2016, when I see Michigan, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, and A&M getting them, I can't help but think they could play at UT and be successful.

The LB from Centinniel High that went to the Aggies was a monster.
But i really like Blakely and Bituli.

Nate Johnson we did offer. But we signed some very good WRs. Would you take Johnson over Callaway??

Notre Dame kid was a legacy for them right? Ole Miss is always going to get Tennessee kids

The safety from Symrna looked like a good player.

I think in 2017, Jackson and Humphries could play anywhere. Very talented instate kids.

Over Callaway, no.
Over Henderson, yes.
There was room for Nate.

I liked Mathews and Angel. Even Cal got a couple good ones.

Hopefully a few will wait and see what we do this season and we do well.

Smith and Chandler. That's literally all I feel even decent about right now out of top caliber type guys. We might be fighting to stay in the top 20. IMO those thinking 10-11 wins causes some huge group of top guys flocking to UT is going to be disappointed.

So Butch winning 9 out of 13 games isn't considered "winning" and improvement? If we go 10-2 this coming season, will that not count as "winning" either? That doesn't make any sense.

If you say it, it's got to be true. Am I right? Considering you know all about recruiting.

I agree with you. The Vols had a solid year last year. You'd think he'd have an easier go this time

Winning the east will go a long way. Good thing is, the in state class for 2018 is better. Big season this year will help tremendously in landing all of them

I disagree. We beat Fla and Bama, even with a loss to Ga or Texas A&M and the top recruits will give us another look.

There was a lot for the staff to sell after 9 wins last year and the preseason projections going into this year. For whatever reason they just haven't been able to do it.

Top recruits want two things. Early playing time and/or championships. Immidiate playing time is hard to come by so we need to show we can win the SEC. (Totally speaking out of my arse but it makes sense)

And how many kids have we pulled from other states that could be equally successful if not more? I'll admit I'm too lazy to do the research, but if you were to name the top players from each recruiting class since Fulmer took over, how many were instate players? I'm guessing most would be out of state! I'm all for recruiting instate, but I just don't understand the obsession with "we must get all of the top instate players". If we do fine, but I'm not worried if we don't when we're pulling quality players from other areas.

0 NFL draft picks in 2 years is killing them.

More than anything they need Barnett, Sutton, and Hurd to be 1st round picks.

Kids really only care about getting to the pros. 9 wins and preseason hype won't move them.

I look at it like this. If a WR goes to Clemson, I ask myself why not Tennessee? If a LB goes to A&M I ask myself why not here? If TN kids are going to other quality programs, why not focus on keeping them in TN? I'd think recruiting closer to home is easier. I'd think if you're securing more TN talent that will lead to more TN talent staying home and playing at UT. I'd imagine there is a benefit to these guys being familiar with each other and in some cases even friends. Why offer 350 kids when you have made the state a priority and in offering 20 kids instate nets you 10+ commitments. 2017 is a great instate class. 2018 and 2019 as well. It's likely to continue. Had the staff turned the focus to instate sooner, I'd bet we would be benefiting big time. You'll never get them all. But IMO we've passed or missed on way too many.

Jumping on every 3 star in sight has not help either. Finishing in the top ten matters in recruiting and it cannot be argued if winning championships is the goal. Not every single 3 star is going to be a Sutton or Jashon Robertson.

No.

Recruits only care about getting to the NFL. Early playing time and competing for championship are just a means to an end....getting to the NFL.

Right now we can't offer early playing time anymore and Butch hasn't proven he can compete for championships. However, the most damning critique right now in recruiting is the fact we have had 0 draft picks in 2 years.

I promise you schools like Clemson and Georgia are beating recruits over the head with this fact. They're telling them if you go to Tennessee you won't get to the NFL. Kids are impressionable and really only remember what they see last. And right now what they've seen is Tennessee choke in big games and have no players taken in the draft.

If Butch wants to change the narrative, he needs to win the SEC championship this season and have MULTIPLE players taken in the 1st round of the 2017 draft.

Its probably to late to change the minds of 2017 recruits. But if we won the SEC championship this year and have multiple 1st round picks, we should be able to salvage top recruiting classes in 2018 and 2019.

I'd imagine other coaches are pointing it out. I'd also think Butch could point to any NFL draft prediction publication and show a recruit where Sutton, JRM, Barnett, Hurd, Kamara, etc are predicted to go in the next draft. Not ideal, but IMO sellable. Especially to a kid who likes Tennessee.
