So they should have just not punished the kid for not obeying the rules. Maybe they should have given him an award for showing those wetbacks what he thinks of them...
just a theory, that people that live in cities tend to be more tolerant of other people's way of doing things since they're exposed to it on a more regular basis.

Meant, when approached they should have denied the request, and encouraged them to wear their colors if they wanted. By taking a stance they got in the middle of it.
And of course, the kid that took the flag down is now a "racist" for his actions. Thats typically what the argument comes to.
That's because there is more diversity, not more tolerance of everyone elsedo a poll in a city... do the same poll in a town... you're telling me people in the city would have the same view as those in a small town... you're crazy... just look at any presedential election. there are huge differences between the populaces.
