Student Suspended For Removing Mexican Flag

How is it challenging American culture?

They put up the flag inside the school to recognize a holiday. They didn't force all of the students to sing the Mexican anthem or wear their colors.

My views are I don't think we should force our culture on someone else or refuse to let others celebrate theirs.

The fact that this is such a big deal to all of you puts your views in perspective.

What do you mean by force?
And to get back to the extremes, have you seen it suggested that they can not fly their flag in their yard, and wear their country's colors to school?

If you don't realize the American culture isn't an English speaking one, you don't have the common sense for this debate.
really???? when people came over from Europe, all of them spoke English??? WRONG... it's developed over time, still doesn't make it a set culture. i can go to many houses where i live and find people doing it different ways, that includes NOT speaking english.

To me, diversity, is the American culture.

Hanging a Mexican flag isn't celebrating Mexican culture, it's endorsing Mexican national pride.

If they were to have hung it outside above the American flag I would agree with you.

So is the French teacher hanging France's flag in her classroom endorsing French national pride?

I bet you think I'm a white supremacist, too.

Nope, just intolerant.

but you're exposed more to what each person can do. in my mind, that outweighs it.

if all i had to go on was the news and i lived in a country town with very little diversity, i'd probably be racist too

I can guarantee you that I have worked and lived among a more diverse culture of people than you have in your life.

Are you suggesting that we are just some small town people who have never lived in a diversified region and that is the reason that we feel the way we do??
Heck yes. How could you ever have life experience close to way he has racked up. Why, he lives in a city and is married to a naturalized citizen. Who can mtch those bona fides?

They didn't bring American culture, they brought their own culture and assimilated to American culture. Something illegal immigrants don't seem willing to do.

I am sure that you can agree with me that serving in the military will give you a great appreciation for different cultures and backgrounds.

Nice profile.

I went to a high school of 1200. 9 black students total.

2 of those 9 rode to school with me everyday. One went to church with me on several occasions. They were two of my better friends in school.

Nice profile again.

But that is a choice you make.

But they cannot fly it inside a school that probably has Mexican-Americans?

No, it's their to help represent the culture of the place where the language is spoken.

Nope, just intolerant.
Yeah, I must be really intolerant towards my parents, my brother, my uncles, my aunts, my cousins, and many of my friends. I don't even let them speak their native language without yelling at them.

I live in a town that is 2/3 black. You must all bow before my knowledge on racial issues.

Unless the school does something like this for every other countries important holidays, it's endorsing Mexico, which should not be done in the United States.

Cinco de Mayo just happens to be a holiday that we celebrate in America. Mainly to find an excuse to get wasted, granted. But i don't see why we shouldn't allow a Mexican-American to celebrate it openly.

Should we, as Christians, go and tear down a flag of the star of David during Hanukkah?

Why would they feel the need to?

This is the extreme I speak of.

I have no problem with their pride in their heritage. Im proud of my diverse one as well.

But at some point, do they have enough pride in the US (and the freedoms it provides) to say thats enough. Im proud of my Mexican heritage, but Im also an American?

I wouldn't, but I'm not stupid enough to think it should be hung up in schools.

huh??? where did this get to illegals???

and they didn't assimilate. if they did, we'd all act like indians. they created their own culture.

i have friends in both the city and country. family in both the city and country. have worked in both the city and the country. the people i know in the city are far more tolerant of other cultures than those in the country.

i experienced racism in the workplace, with people openly using the n word, in the country. do this speak for everybody in country towns? nope. but to say people in the country are just as tolerant as other cultures as those in the city isn't true. it's only natural. when you've only been exposed to one way, of course you're gonna think that way is the correct and only way to do things.

as far as other people's culture aren't in the public eye, they're ok with it. They're all for immigrants celebrating their culture as long as they don't have to see it.
