Syrian Kurds are close to declaring Independence

Two other things of note: apparently the SDF has agreed to full reintegration of Kurdish areas under full Syrian Arab Republic control and there has been an apparent (but not confirmed) US air strike on SAA forces near Raqqa.

If only Members of Congress could do something about it.

So in order to try and throw shade on Trump for a policy which has been screwed up for over a decade you’re willing to put US soldiers in the line of fire to be killed. What a bunch of f-ing idiots 🙄

Who are SAA forces?

She needs to be patient. Trump is going to destroy the Turkish economy. He's done it before?

But Congress can't do anything about the Kurd situation, except maybe give money. They should maybe turn their eyes to Saudi Arabia.

Oh, sure. Ask them away. But as a reminder, at the end of the day, they are still bound to follow orders of the President of the United States. Unless, of course, you feel like our military shouldn't remain under civilian authority.

Here's the thing. Turkey was going in whether or not we wanted them to. We tried working out the dynamics of what they were doing and they walked away from the negotiations effectively ending any say we might have had in the matter. You can blame Trump all you want, but I'd tend to think all the Presidents we've had (or the alternatives in 2016) would be in the same predicament.

Again, we will have serious questions on if (or maybe when) Russia gets involved and starts hammering Turkish troops in that area. They will scream about how they were "attacked" and call for an emergency NATO meeting. Now, if I was Trump, I'd be forming a coalition against Turkey in this matter and telling them "you're on your own since you decided to pull this stunt to begin with." All while telling Russia "no further than the Turkish border or we will get involved."

This is a big **** sandwich we've gotten ourselves involved in by going into Syria with unclear motives and a distinct lack of national security implications.

Sure, I mean some troop feedback could have been helpful. I'm not sure Trump consulted anyone. Seems like the Pentagon was baffled.

The situation as it is right now would now be what it is now if Trump just does nothing.

Ever meet a war they didn't like?

As I said before, this was a tough situation and there were no good options. Even the link from earlier (one of Velo's many Tweets) with the SecDef made it seem like Turkish involvement was a foregone conclusion and nothing we could do, short of a shooting war, was going to stop them. We'd been trying to negotiate this for weeks when the Turks walked away and prepared to do their own thing.

As much as I hate to lose "allies" like this, the alternatives weren't much better. Again, if the Kurds had their own internationally recognized nation, this would be a little more clear and the outrage over "abandoning" them would be justified. But facing facts, we are/were supporting a faction in a civil war. Let's just say every ISIS fighter was dead, what then? Do we continue to support the Kurds in their fight against Assad even knowing he has Russian backing? Work towards an independent Kurdish state that includes northern Iraq which WILL bring it into conflict with Turkey?

What's our end game here?

How far back do you want to go? I can't tell you much, further back than.. say Desert Storm.

But do tell.
Let’s go to Desert Storm. 1991. Yeah we should have and did defend an ally.

We should not have gone back in in 2003.

We had no business getting involved in a civil war starting in 2011 in Syria. But war hawks on both sides couldn’t withstand the bait. Then we actively attack Syrian forces in either 2016 or 2017?! Now we’re an active combatant in a damn civil war!

Keep up your TDS on blaming this on Trump. The fact that war hawks on both sides of the aisle are pissed at him tells me he most likely got it right in choosing to withdraw. Which is exactly what the hell he said he was going to do in his stump speeches.

Two US presidents have contributed to screwing up this situation that started in 2011. One of them is now trying to get our people the hell out of it. Good for Trump.

You’re FOS. We would have US soldiers in the middle of an ethnic war that has been coming for years. Trump is right to get our people the hell out of the way.

Sorry, call it TDS, if you like.. but yeah I blame him for not pulling his Jedi master negotiator mind tricks, when it counts. Rather than the "Turkey said I had to", that has most of us with TDS scratching their damn heads.

The war hawks are generally from states with large military suppliers. They don't GAS about people, just the dollars going towards an endless war with unlimited money supporting their constituents defense jobs.

If Trump does t give the Turks the Greenlight to cross the border and remove troops from the area what would the Turks do???? Would they attempt to push us out???
Prove they wouldn’t. Because that is exactly what many have been stating would occur. Erdogan was going to invade. We need to get the hell out of his way it isn’t our fight.

Yep... classic chronic TDS looks like. Well knowing the issue is half the battle good luck stewie!

He made a rash decision without using any critical thinking or consulting the NSC, JCS, CENTCOM Commander or any State Department experts in the field. But Trump does this time and time again making rash decisions without considering the possible consequences but your ok with that because it “Makes America Great Again.”

And asking our military leadership is we should withdraw or not is equally as ****ed up which is another dumbass complaint being made now. Diplomacy is not their strong suit.

The Turks would have only pushed us if they believe he would have bent over and left.

Read the post just below yours. Asking our military leaders on diplomacy tactics is stupid. State. Only state. Not the damn military.
