Syrian Kurds are close to declaring Independence

Looks like there was a small tank battle between the Syrians and their T-72s and Turkey’s M-60s outside Manbij which end ended in tie.

So do we continue to save face and string them along for a few more years?
We can never leave. We have an army, so we might as well use it. We should bring colonialism back entirely. At least levy taxes on the people we're protecting and plunder their natural resources if they have any.

Do I have this straight? Trump gave Turkey the green light to move into Syria, and now he's sanctioning them for doing so?

3D chess.

Sources in Turkey have indicated that while Erdoğan was talking big, he thought Trump would restrain him.

Kudos to Trump then.

The big picture: Trump would tell Erdoğan that if he wanted to invade Syria he would have to own whatever mess ensued, according to these sources. Erdoğan would have to take care of ISIS and manage international condemnation, trouble from Capitol Hill, and the quagmire with the Kurds. And when Trump put it in such stark terms to Erdoğan, the Turkish leader would demur. Until last Sunday, that is, when he told Trump he was moving ahead with the invasion of northern Syria.

Everything in that paragraph makes good damn sense. Hey Erdogan wants to own it? Good let him have it! ALL of it.

And we get to bring out troops home! Woohoo thanks Erdogan!

No none of it makes since. Erdogan called his bluff and Trump never thought he would. Which has now caused chaos not only in Syria but through the would power structure. Now you have a situation where the balance of power has been tipped and the hegemonic stability is Now unstable.

How so?

Turkey wanted to attack the Kurds, but didn’t want to attack American troops. So Trump took care of Erdogan’s problem. You can come up with mental gymnastics to take Trump’s side, but that is the reality. Own it.

Where do I start?

Reality: Trump called for a withdrawal from Syria all the way back in December of last year

Reality: Turkey and the US were in negotiations back in early August over their intervention

Reality: Intervention by Turkey was going to happen, it was a matter of how far they went

Reality: Turkey walked away from negotiations since they wouldn't agree on the depth of the "zone."

Reality: Turkey massed 10-15,000 troops on the border before the call

Reality: Trump was facing a difficult choice, keep American soldiers in the line of fire between two of our "allies" or pull them back

Reality: Trump made a difficult, but understandable choice since the Turks were going to come in

Reality: You have no proof we "gave the invasion the green light" save your usual "sources."

Reality: Had Trump kept the troops in place and they'd been caught between the Kurds and Turks, you'd still be whining

Reality: While it might seem like a bad move, because of your aforementioned whining, keeping our troops out of a bad situation was probably the best decision

There's the reality you are missing

They are allies in name only. If the Turks attack the Russian backed Assad forces and then try you declare article 5 it won’t work because Article 5 applies in terms of self defense. An attack on one is an attack on all. It doesnt apply to acts when a NATO member is committing ng the acts of aggression.

Gee, I wonder who thought of this the other day...
