Tennessee Lady Vol News

I think the starting lineup is important this season. I say that because this team has game experience throughout the roster in spots 1-10. Kaiya Wynn, Edie Darby, and transfer Talaysia Cooper who is redshirting are the only players on the team without starters experience.
In practice, there should be healthy competition every day to determine who earns their spot/minutes. With that being said, I believe two spots are guaranteed right now and that’s Rickea Jackson and surprisingly Karoline Striplin. Striplin in these practice and conditioning videos looks to be in remarkable basketball shape. Last season, she improved consistently after stepping into the starters role and had some good moments. The third spot will go to either Sara Puckett or Jillian Hollingshead. The next two spots either Destinee Wells, Jewel Spear, or Jasmine Powell. Destinee Wells is the best PG on the roster and the most prolific scoring PG in the SEC hands down but things are usually taken slow at this position. Once she’s ready, she will earn the role as quarterback (football analogy) of the offense! Key just needs time to work into basketball form. She won’t start to begin the year after sitting out nearly a full season.

Projected starting lineup:
Wells, Spear, Rickea, Hollingshead, Striplin
First off the bench: Powell or Puckett, Darby, Tamari Key.

I agree with your proposed starting lineup, except I believe that Tamari will be in the starting lineup. GBO.

Wouldn’t waste much time trying to guess lineups. Based on Kellie’s tenure so far we will all hate the original starting lineup and sub patterns and it will evolve until SEC play. I hate it, but to be expected at this point.

I’d bet my bottom dollar Tess starts over Jewel to begin the season and everyone’s head will explode.

Would love to see her start the right 5 (wells, spear, Jackson, Hollingshed and key) and have a tight 7-8 player rotation. But I highly doubt that happens.

this /\

I believe one thing that gets overlooked is that the previous two seasons Tess Darby did not start to begin the regular season until injuries to Rae Burrell and Jordan Horston moved her up the depth chart. She (Tess) will compete and certainly be in the rotation as a three point specialist.
Last season, Jordan Walker and Jasmine Powell both were initially in the starting lineup ahead of Darby.
I don’t think there’s some automatic sign that Tess Darby will start over any player this season if they are ready week 1 and earn the spot before the season opener.

I would love to see her back healthy and playing at full strength. Key had some outstanding performances her sophomore year recording double digit block shots in a single game multiple times. These are great options to have!

My head would explode because how can Spear make the U.S. team and I don’t think Darby would have but Darby starts over her on this team

She didn’t start over Jasmine Powell or Jordan Walker to start last season.
Two PGs were in the starting lineup when Tennessee played Ohio State.
If Spear doesn’t start it has nothing to do with Tess Darby.

Would you be shocked if some of us doubted the sincerity of your concerns over our recruiting?
Perhaps I should go on the boneyard and express my worries that with Geno’s imminent, sooner than later, well within current recruit’s careers retirement UConn will be headed down the La Tech road! I could wring my hands over who, who would want to follow a legend like Geno?!? Yep, I bet the Connie’s would appreciate my thoughts and genuine concern!
If you tried that Husky Nan would boot you off the boneyard quickly. That's how it works over there.........thin skinned to be sure.

I wish you would quit referring to her as “Husky” Nan. Nan is just fine. You continue to body shame her…

If Tamari Key is healthy. There is no way Karoline or any other post is starting in front of her. Will not happen.

Good point.
Tamari Sets the tone on the Defensive end from the first tip. Teams have to prepare differently on the offensive end if they know that she is in there due to her length and shot-blocking abilities. The highest shot percentage a team gets comes from getting shots in the paint. That is nullified with Tamari in there. It also allows the perimeter defense to play more aggressively knowing they have a rim protector behind them. Two years ago, we were one of the top teams in the nation defensively mainly because of Tamari's presence. I would guess the defense will be just as solid or better with this year's veteran team.

I agree Tamari Key at full strength is a formidable defensive force at C.
If she needs a few games or weeks to get back acclimated to the speed and pace of the game, Karoline Striplin consistent improvement(s) to her game is great for this team and building depth. We also have a future SEC star in Jillian Hollingshead who is versatile and can play the 3, 4, or 5 spot AT 6’5!
I want Tamari in a starting role when she is ready and I bet opponents will feel her presence on the court controlling the paint.
