Tennessee Lady Vol News

This comment inspired me to check on Cora’s latest AP ballot.

…she ain’t got a vote this year. Anyone know who all is representing SEC fanbases of the current voters? I did note Becca has a vote this year. The only one I really recognized, besides Mich Vopel.
Really? Cora no vote? Wow. I'll vote for her. We should be 15-18, and should now be slightly above KY and Ala.

Lady Vols moved up to No. 13 in the World Exposure Report Poll last week they were No. 14

No. 3 South Carolina
No. 5 LSU
No. 7 Texas
No. 10 Oklahoma
No. 13 Lady Vols
No. 18 Alabama
No. 19 Kentucky
N. 21 Ole Miss

Okay. That’s just the SEC that made those decisions and is not something Kim got stuck with as residual scheduling by Kellie.
Right. Which is why I said it was due to SEC scheduling.

I would bet Kellie and Co were already busy at the time she was fired dismantling the crazy preseason sched they made the previous 2 yrs. Kim and Co saw that wisdom and finished the job.

That's so interesting, and hopeful! Like you, I'm prone to think at this point in their careers, shooters pretty much are who they are. Hard to see Ruby, Jill, Spearman, Spencer, and even Coop becoming consistent long range gunners. All are historically low % outside shooters. And our dilemia, as it has been for years, is that those who have better accuracy (Tess, Sara, Jewel) are a little slow in creating space and getting the shot off. If that could hitch up a notch, it would be great. But not holding breathe. I think the incoming recruits are our best hope.

I wonder how much of Marshall's improvement was just bc of poor competition in their league. That would explain the fall off when they got to the tourney against real defenses.
Actually, most of their preconference games were against small schools, with the game everything clicked being relatively good and big Florida. They shot well in their conference tournament until the championship game against James Madison, who was a good mid-major team who had already played them twice. I imagine tired legs would have been in effect by the championship game. Nevertheless, Marshall won with 20 steals and 30+ offensive rebounds!!! I think the other postseason game they shot poorly, Va Tech in the NCAAs, was that they were simply overmatched by a talented tournament tested team.

Marshall got up 78 shots in the VA tech game made 19. Only 6 for 41 from the three. Va Tech shot 52 times in the game made 28 and 10 threes. Va Tech got to the line 31 times made 26.

More on our three point shooting. Spencer, Cooper, Darby, and Spear have made 48 of 137 threes for 35 percent. Whitehorn, Puckett, Hollingshead, Spearman, Latham, and Boyd 23 of 110 for 21 percent. So we know who we need to cut back on shooting them. It would mean a lot to the final total if we were ever shooting 32 percent from the three instead of 27 percent.

Listened to Lynne Roberts, new Sparks coach and former Utah coach, describe her take on an analytics driven up tempo system. For her it's all and only about shot selection. Efficiency per shot is the emphasis, so she would actively forbid the 21%ers those shots. And run plays for the better statistical shooters. Has a strict protocol of "good" and "bad" shots.

It's chicken or egg - do you make up for poor shooting by scrambling for extra possessions and extra and easy shots or do you just take and make good shots and save yourself the extra expended energy.

I love Spencer, she's been a key. But including her in the 35%ers is marginal for me. Her % is skewed by a couple of super hot games in a row. Historically she's lived more w the 21%ers. I do want her to keep shooting good 3s for now to see how she does. She may actually be one who improves over her history.

Spencer is the most under control pg we've had in a while. Makes such good decisions. Her court presence is a plus I didn't see coming when we got her.

As the SEC portion of our schedule approaches, I think we will see more emphasis on who is firing up the 3s, especially in the 4th quarter. I think we will still see a lot of 3s being s of of steals, and fast breaks from defensive rebounds and our pressing defense will continue to become more effective. I think we will eliminate the cross court lob-passes, and our turnovers will decrease. Our offensive rebounds will continue to get us more shots and we will become a top 10-15 team by the end of the season. Coaches teams seem to improve a lot in terms of second half of the season and should also do that this year. We will see how much time she looses with the new baby, but I can hardly wait for the rest of the season.

Turnovers have been looking better and better. We only had 9 against Iowa. +21 turnover margin will win you A LOT of ballgames lol

Our system is only about a press and then a regular half court defense. Subbing is about the theory that a fresh player is going to give more effort than a tired player. No reason why it wouldn't work against any team if you have ten players that are close to equally competent. Our system is totally about effort more that any plan to trick someone. I've been finding it strange that so many coaches think it will not work against SEC teams. They may be right against more talented teams as talent always wins over any system a coach can run. I do find it amusing that so many coaches we play think were running some kind of new gimmick system that has never seen a basketball floor before. So many teams ran similar or same type systems in the past with enormous success. Arkansas men's teams under Nolan Richardson comes to mind for sure.
You need certain a type of player to be successful doing it and Kim was able to go out and get several players that fit the system perfectly and has been able to work in the ones that don't with enough effect to make it successful to this point. I know were going to have a tough go against LSU, SC, and Texas. Will like every season be tough to win against a lot of teams on the road. If we lose to Texas, LSU, SC, or UConn it won't be because of the system as much as their talent level. If we beat any of them it will be more because of the system we run more than any other reason as it can be effective in overcoming a more talented team if the shooting percentage is adequate. Shooting percentage is always the big key to winning any game. So a system that can give you anywhere from 15 to 25 plus more shots definitely will always work if you can shoot the ball well enough.
Still is and will always be about talent and players. Player talent makes great coaches not the other way around.
