Tennessee Media Coverage v. Memphis

UT has 17 national TV games this season compared to Tiger High 3. The two seasons prior were about the same. Even when your tigers were #1 for most of the season during Cal's time you could not find Tiger High on TV.[/QUOTE]

We can debate what is considered "national TV" all day long. Fine, you win, the Vols are on national TV more than the Tigers. First, most of that "national TV" is tied to an SEC TV contract. Second, with all of that "national" exposure, how come "Tiger High" continues to out recruit UT year in and out?

The fact is that the flagship University, with all of its TV contracts, BCS affiliation, and $$ continues to run a distant second in recruiting and NCAA success to, by your own words, a High School. Says alot about your program.

Then why does our team keep beating your team?

For all this supposed amazing success of Memphis basketball, they rarely rate more than a blip nationally. When people think of Memphis, they think of them in the following order:

1. Elvis
2. Beale Street
3. Nearly half the episodes of The First 48
4. That team Calipari got into trouble
5. Uh, Anfernee Hardaway, maybe?
6. Wait, you mean they have a football team?

I understand the desire to overstate the success of Memphis basketball, but they still have a losing record to UT in their best sport, still opine whistfully about their one victory in the other prominent college sport nearly 15 years ago and, generally, offer little else than a mediocre and fans with a huge inferiority complex.
I happened to be in Memphis area during mid night madness and I can without a doubt say the fans and media, were very excited . I dare say the gym was packed that night as well. By the way, the first 48 will only be reruns from there since the city hated the bad light the show put them in. Myself, I like Memphis.

Yes, Josh did recruit a great (Memphis Magic) AAU team in 2010. According to Rivals.com, this was the #2 recruiting class. The Vols were #9, not to shabby. This year Josh is having a tough time landing recruits, only AT. He missed on Madden, Miller, Gardner, and a number of other high profile players. The 2010 class included JJ, Crawford, Black, all Memphis players.

..and the whiff. Bartons are from Baltimore. Kendrick is from Atlanta.

Tigers will only have 1 senior (Coleman). If season goes well could have 2 early entries (Witherspoon/Barton). 2012 will probably be the next big haul year as Tigers are in on a handful of top players.

Wow! National recruiting. Kendrick won't be there long.

What is this football of which you speak? Is that the diversion that goes on prior to basketball season?

When people think of Knoxville they think of:

1. Women's basketball.
2. Goat raping.
3. Hillbillies.

Yeah, sure they think of women's basketball. Nobody really notices that 100,000+ stadium where they play the most popular sport in the country. That's football I speak of, you know the weekly fall ritual where you lose to various cow schools by 4 touchdowns and collect paychecks from UT to support your worthless athletic program.

Regardless of your chatter, the only sport you have any worth or any pride, still has a losing record to school of note in this state.

I read your first sentence and wanted to relate that more people nationally cared about Britney Spears than Guided by Voices but that sure as hell didn't mean she was better...

I just want to throw in that I am utterly shocked and amazed that Guided by Voices got namechecked on this board.

Not including BBQ really hampers your respectability regarding a "Memphis list."

I've learned that Volnation is extremely diverse. We have an amazing collection of very different folks up in this piece.

Humdinger

The entire state would run a budget surplus if Memphis was given to Miss. We would also improve in our rankings in education, in crime statistics, in obesity, in health etc.

The Tigers do not matter. No matter how many sportwriters/lovers like GP and Wolken you have in your crap hole, your team does not matter to the rest of the country.

When you have a player who gets into altercations and threatens his teammates and your coach keeps doing a "no comment" to the media, he should be pursued for more information. He is not being pursued, because even though Kendrick was a stud recruit, very few people care about Tiger High.

UT has a soon-to be suspended, whistle-blowing, cheating, lying, sniveling, crybaby of a coach that has a knack for signing potheads and thugs that are too dumb and stoned to play anywhere else, hehe. :p

1. Crews and Ramar Smith dismissed; violation of substance abuse policy and academics were factors

"A feel-good day for the Tennessee men’s basketball program was interrupted Friday when coach Bruce Pearl announced that sophomore forward Duke Crews and sophomore point guard Ramar Smith will not be returning for the 2008-09 season. Violations of the University of Tennessee’s substance-abuse policy and academic shortcomings contributed to both departures, sources within the program told the News Sentinel."

KNOXVILLE - Four University of Tennessee basketball players were arrested on drug and weapons charges today after a Knoxville police officer stopped the car they were riding in for speeding on Alcoa Highway near Kingston Pike.
The four are: Cameron Tatum, who was driving the vehicle; Tyler Smith, who was sitting in the front seat; Melvin Goins, a rear seat passenger; and Brian Williams, also sitting in the backseat.

I don't know much about their scholarship situation, but they only have one Senior on their roster. Since they brought in a huge class (numbers wise) last year, I couldn't see them signing more than a couple of guys anyway.

Ive been told that we are only expecting to sign 2-3 including Adonis. The only free schollys we will have next season will be Coleman (senior), Spoon (Junior but projected 1st rd NBA pick), and possibly Barton if he does go 1 and done. We had a huge class this past year and the three above are the only ones that might leave.

Even fewer people nationally care about UT BB. When you say UT, the majority of sports fans and UT fans think in the following order:

1. Football program that used to be great.
2. Women's basketball
3. Men's basketball.

"Tiger High" has been relevant in Men's basketball since the 1970s. In every decade, the Tigers have had at least 2 Sweet Sixteen appearances, and if not for Nick Van Exel, would have a Final Four in every decade since the 70s.

Tiger High has placed a list of players too numerous to list in the NBA in the last 20 years. UT has Dale Ellis, Allan Houston, and CJ Watson.

Any college basketball expert knows and will tell you which school has a more storied tradition. Conference affiliation, city statistics, or player background makes no difference in your argument of basketball program relevance.

MHF continues to dazzle us with his overwhelming basketball knowledge. Anyone who thinks Memphis is not relevant as a basketball program much have been living in a cave or drinking at night, which he denies doing.

it's just nobody cares if Memphis is any good, outside people in Memphis. They are not a National name by any means. They have put people in NBA, but still nobody really cares and TV doesn't seem to be high on them either.

Yup.

More people cared about UNLV at their height than care about Memphis.

Not lots of money riding on them, not big audiences for their giant rivalries with UAB...

Memphis is not a massive and important program nationally in basketball. BVF you are wrong so often you should try Castanza.

TV is not high on us because we dont provide matchups in the ****ty conference we play in. All of our key non-con games are on national TV and we were offered two more national TV games (Louisville and Butler) but declined. The Louisville wanted a home-away-home deal but the Butler was a home-and-home and still baffles me.

This might be the stupidest thing I have seen on this board. We average 16k for home games in a ****ty conference. We have three final fours and two title game appearances. The only real thing we lack is a title.

Do me a favor, the next time you post complete BS such as the bolded above, at least attempt to gather some facts before doing so. The UAB has been sold out at the Forum the last 5 years. I guess 18,600 is a "small gathering" to you.

As the absolute master of constantly being wrong, I'll assume castanza is what you do? They play in a weak conference, but to say a program that makes the tournament most every year and has made national championship games is not a national program is stupid.

Also, keep in mind, Memphis has no control over the strength of their conference. There is a concerted effort by the University and its High profile boosters to leave this dog show. Just waiting on the invite from somebody, anybody.
