Tennessee Media Coverage v. Memphis

Homefry do you have some new measure of Memphis as a national power aside from attendance and revenue and merchandise sales?
Posted via VolNation Mobile

I only claim Memphis basketball is relevant. I know our football program is not. Therefore, how can I accurately determine revenue sales for the two different sports? You are basing the fact that your football program has a rich history and great fan support that easily matriculates into a winning basketball team. I consider achievements from past teams, the amount of publicity from the national media, rankings of recruiting classes each year, rankings of the team both pre season and during, as well as capacity in our arena for all games.

You are basing your claim on one successful year and a few sprinkled in wins in the past five as claim that UTK is a national power. Compile that with you completely irrational claim that selling shirts for football fans somehow means your basketball program is relevant and youll have a great story to tell people.

Tennessee in basketball paid attendance is behind only unquestioned nationally relevant programs like Kentucky, North Carolina and Syracuse and yet we came in 4th. Memphis came in 10th at its peak.

Is there some other measure I am missing that makes the Tigers a bigger national power than TN?

1982-84 Sweet 16
1985 Final Four (vacated or not, it still happened).
1992 Elite 8
1995 Sweet 16
2006-2007 Elite 8
2008 Runner Up (vacated or not, it still happened).
2009 Sweet 16.

More All Americans, more 1st round draft picks. Period.

Wait so UNLV is better than Memphis or not? More historical success?

do they have more historical success?

Really? Yes. 4th winningest program in history. A real championship in your lifetime unless you are a teenager. Lots of Final Fours even more than Memphis if you include the cheating ones.

I was just testing you to see if you were going to provide real facts instead of some more BS like you are used to. So UNLV might be a better program but what exactly is the basis of this argument?

UNLV has awesome history but is not a top program now. Memphis has some historical success but it is not currently a top program who people care about the way they care about UT. Tobias Harris will give UT the NBA guy needed to open up the pipeline and unlike say GA Tech last 5 years our pipeline will produce results.

UNC Kansas Kentucky and Duke...
I think Michigan State post Izzo
UCONN post Calhoun
Syracuse post Boeheim

all may drop off significantly.
No one thought UCLA would ever drop as a basketball power.

Is this because UT made the EE last year and Memphis was in the NIT?

No it goes back further, to a team with no NBA players beating Memphis when they were number 1.

The trend is that TN is a better basketball school than Memphis. Given that is all Memphis had, it is hilarious.

We may lose guys like Adonis Thomas but Memphis without Worldwide is not going to get multiple All Americans. It will make them a solid school who can win Conference USA and get a 5 seed, but they will not be a team with the profile or the future of the Tennessee Volunteers.

Im guessing Worldwide got us three All Americans last year too right?

Huh? I am talking about college All Americans. Not Jelan Kendrick (who I wanted) etc.

I think you have a super stud in Will Barton. I think most of the others will not be college level AAs like CDR was.

We dont have any college all americans because our players tend to get drafted. You do know what the NBA is right? Its also funny how you make blanket assumptions about the future of our program when we have been quite successful given the circumstances of Cals departure.

Do you define "current" top program as one who made their 1st Elite 8 appearance, and had rings made for it, last year? Or, are the 3 straight E8 appearances by the Tigers in 2006-2008 far too distant a memory?

Homefry,
The truth is I like Pastner a lot.
I think he is very smart and a great recruiter.
If Pearl gets the axe I hope he is one of the guys we pursue (as I said already).

Memphis is probably with him going to stay a top 25 kind of team. I think Memphis has now fallen behind TN as a basketball program. That is hilarious to those of us who have endured hatred from our little brother to the west for so long.

MHF,
I think Bruce Pearl is a a good promoter
I also think he cheats as much as Cal did
I think its irrational for you to assume that because you had your first respectable tourney run that you are a better program now.
I think four straight years of Elite Eight including one Final Four in the last five years is better than any other team in the country except maybe Duke and Mich St
I think you are more oblivious to the real world of basketball than a 10 yr old rich girl
I think its most telling that the respected posters on this board actually agree with me.
I think your full of ****

Resorting to trash talk of vacated seasons is comical. You do understand whats about to happen in Knoxville will be much worse than our one vacated season right? Im not saying it will be the death penalty but its going to be much worse. The NCAA to this day cannot prove any wrong doing occured. they introduced a completely new term known as "strict liability" meaning it was the responsibility of the institution to prove that he was eligible, not the NCAA to prove that he wasnt even though their very own clearinghouse cleared him not once, but twice. So you keep going with your trash talk about vacated seasons, youll notice that banner still hangs in the rafters next time youre in the Fedex Forum.

There is no such thing as most respected posters on the board.

Bruce Pearl and Cal have both broken NCAA rules
Speeders and Rapists have both broken the law.

I will laugh so hard at you when we get the letter in December. We will beat your team after we have avoided any post season ban at all. We did not have an illiterate NBA player, we had a BBQ where 3 committed juniors came, two of whom subsequently left.

We made an Elite 8 run with a team that is not as talented as this one. You seem to not understand the arc of TN recent history in basketball (although it is funny to think back on the Jerry Green team that had NC beaten and collapsed when I see a Memphis fan bragging about an old Sweet 16).

Bruce Pearl got here and had no proven success. The man could not bring a point guard to save his life. He offered every good point guard in Ramar Smith's class and was turned down by all of them. He had to take a murdering drug dealer. He also had a Mr. Kentucky basketball who Kentucky did not want and a walk on who started and was one of the best players. With that kind of motley crew, he beat Memphis.

Dane Bradshaw is a last of his kind player for Pearl.

Our team is now going to look more like Tobias Harris, and less like Jurick.

Pearl is tainted by this storm, and is going to stay here in Knoxville. He will bring in studs in 2012, studs in 2013 etc. The knock on him has always been that he did not put anyone in the NBA, and that will be gone soon.

Get used to fighting Vandy for 2nd place in the state.

Right. That stellar recruiting class yall have coming in next year so far is gonna be out of this world right? And you just made fun of me for mentioning a Sweet 16 when youre claim to fame was almost beating NC? Thats hilarious. And your BBQ wasnt the real problem although thats a big violation within itself. The real problem was lying to the NCAA.

Oh, and why dont you ask your boy Pearl about giving a bunch of improper gifts to Chris Crawford a year ago? Yea, bet you didnt know that little snippet did you?

I have heard rumors of the NCAA interviewing Crawford about his UT visit, did not know what it was about though. hmm

So according to you, a "moral" victory > a Sweet 16. Thank you for gracing us with your expertise in College Basketball. But, for a school that makes E8 rings, there's probably raised a banner for "almost" beating mighty UNC.

so UT is the first team to make E8 rings? I think you'd be surprised at what schools you're knocking with that post

Since Pearl committed such minor violations and all other coaches commit major violations, I'm pretty sure the NCAA will forget about the lying and probably give Pearl some sort of award for running such a clean program. Your arguments in trying to support Tanning bed continue to amaze folks who reside in reality land.
