That may be what they say but it’s not really true. They own land around their campus that is not in use. The real reason is they don’t want to spend the money. Their athletic budget is rolled into the university’s budget and the athletic “department” is already losing money at the expense of the academic side. They fund things like women’s bowling, which is cheap to operate, to meet the required quota of women athletes.Vanderbilt does not have the on-campus space to build a softball facility. If they had a program, they would have to play somewhere off-campus, and are apparently not willing to do that.
They are adding volleyball in two years, they have been heavily pressured to add a softball program. I anticipate it will happen at some point, but it is still five years away or more.
