Tennessee to pursue Antonio Barton

From the recent Washington post article they are one of the teams involved so tifwiw. He has been pretty quiet, so not sure if you were looking for official statement or what.

I've heard a lot from UT in regards to Barton (reaching out to him, trying to set up a visit, etc.), but I haven't been paying much attention from reports from Barton's perspective (a "top X" list, whether he'd agreed to a UT visit, etc.)

I don't think there's any doubt that UT has contacted him. I'm just wondering if any of the interest has been reciprocated so far.
All that has really come out has been a quote about the Maryland visit, and the family discussing that they were looking for the best fit in terms of showing off his game e.g playing time. To be frank, there usually isn't a ton of information flying around in this type of recruitment. The last time Tennessee picked up one of these types of transfers, there was literally almost nothing about it until the day he, John Fields, visited and subsequently committed. We'll see what happens, but FWIW most of the stuff I've read on TOS claims that there is mutual interest and that Stokes, McRae, and Maymon are all selling him on it.

Barton hasn't listed any top schools...he's been very quiet. All he said about his Maryland visit was, it went tremendous. 3 words, that's all he was willing to say, and I didn't see anything about his A&M visit...he's keeping things very quiet.

The only thing I've seen that has confirmed that is our Rivals BBall reporter said Cuonzo has been reaching out to him for a few weeks now and that he is "listening closely".

To me that at least insinuates he is interested.

On if Barton is going to visit...

"If it happens it will be the end of the month, somewhere around the 26th & 27th. The next two weekends are dead periods. Tennessee is still trying to get him on campus."

I'm thinking UT has a real shot with AB now. Not sure that he needs a visit to make the decision.....he's been there. :)

I think Maryland may be his first choice but a mistake IMO. I think he's still considering K State and Texas A&M as well.

I did not think we had a shot at Barton but now it looks like we have a good chance. Need to get him on campus.

Just curious - why do you say Maryland would be a mistake?

I think if he likes Zo and the staff, he could commit to UT without a visit. A transfer isn't required to sign anything like a LOI so it could be pretty informal. I'm not saying I think UT is the favorite but he's certainly familiar with the school. If he does visit, I would think it looks good for the Vols. The big advantage Maryland has is that it's home.

Starting to feel good (probably jinxed it) about our chances. I said if we made it through his visit to Maryland without him committing that's huge. Many Maryland people thought a commitment was coming shortly after his visit, we'll that's been almost a week now. The longer this goes the better I would feel, hopefully we start hearing some things about a visit. As bwings mentioned though, he's been here before, it's plausible to think he may commit without visiting.

Not sure why we are feeling better here when we are hearing we are still TRYING to get a visit. I don't buy the he's been here before stance. If he isn't willing to commit(which appears to be the case) to a visit we are out IMO.

The thought was he was a lock to Maryland. He visited last week, their "experts" said they expected him to announce he was committing soon after his visit. It has now been 7 days and he hasn't said a word. He can't visit here right now, so even if he wanted to come visit it would be pointless. Him holding out makes it look to me like he waiting for the dead period to be over do that he can make a visit.

If he knew he was going to Maryland and wasn't gonna visit anywhere else why not just commit? As for the visiting Tennessee, I was being half sarcastic, however it's not uncommon for players to commit to a school they've never visited.
