Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

What do you make of pursuit of Murray?

Backup plan to Phillips. UT thought they were getting Phillips the first time and FSU thought they were getting Phillips the first time so its due diligence. I don't think they are getting Murray though and the thought is that he is heading north and out of the SEC.

Overall I think post help may be very hard to find (and in high demand so that's a tough recruiting battle) so they would rather take a wing who they have rated higher than just taking a post just to take a post. They would love to upgrade in the post though, but I'm just not sure they will be able to.

They would be very happy to have Phillips and the mystery PG and call it a day. That's the ideal realistic scenario as of today. You heard differently?

Wish we would go after KJ Williams. Best post in the portal, probably one of the best in the portal in general

No that’s essentially what I heard as well that PG/Phillips was their ideal scenario, the pursuit of Murray is what made me question that a bit but having him as a contingency plan makes some sense as well.

Why would UT AD be leaking info to mid-minor donors about basketball transfers? What is the point of that?
Just spitballin here but I wonder if some donors are fed up with Barnes lack of tourney succes, as is myself and are threatening to pull $ so they're being told the roster is being upgraded.
Or they're being told and asked for more $ for NIL deals (more likely)

I'm going to assume it is for an NIL donation request to land players. It's the only thing that makes sense, as I don't know what other reason a donor would need to know the state of our basketball roster/transfers.

there are still a lot of moving pieces, but to me it feels like our roster leaves the least opportunity to Mashack. After next year only has 2 years left and looks like will be in a very congested position on our roster. Things will definitely change if we miss on some of these potential recruits/transfers. Q has an extra year and seems to have better guard skills

I doubt any of the donors are upset with what Barnes has done at Tennessee. He won the first SEC Tournament in over 40 years and he will have a better team next year.

When it comes through Basilio it isn’t the highly guarded information. If they’re feeding it to his sources they’re either letting it slowly filter out or want to gauge the pushback. In other words, he’s not getting the information unless they WANT him to start squawking about it.

Pretty much how I feel. If they didn’t redshirt him this year, doubt they redshirt him next year. His minutes likely aren’t going to improve much, especially if we land Phillips and the mystery PG. I really like his game, but it feels like his clock is ticking and I can’t blame him for wanting to explore another option where there is more of a path to immediate playing time.

My serious answer is the NIL thing. I would think it would take deal to get Phillips here for sure, and probably to get some of the better transfers as well.

Deboundje hadn’t been given a RS for 2021-22 yet.

He’s not going to get a redshirt at all. He played throughout the year. Even played in the Longwood game. Yes he only played in a handful of games, but the rule in basketball hasn’t been changed. If he plays at all, then he’s not getting a redshirt.

That would be true in any other year, but there is a strong chance a new rule is passed this off-season that would bring basketball more in line with the football redshirt rules.

No one is saying he is 100% getting a redshirt, but I think Barnes has a much better idea than we do about if that rule will be passed, QD coincidentally played in exactly 25% of our games this year, which means he would be eligible for a RS on the chance that rule does pass this summer.

Yeah @cncchris33 made a good observation about his use in that Longwood game

Several are anticipating a retro-active rule change. Barnes is on the rules committee and his participation pattern was as if CRB is expecting a limit of up to 20% of games staying within a new rule. (6 or 30 regular season games). It’s almost like the 6th (at KY) was on purpose to get him the experience in front of the hostile crowd at Rupp after sitting for a month and then not entering a game again until the NCAAT 2 months after @Rupp.
