Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Nickleberry was head of recruiting at LSU, had the nickname, “Payday” and has signed a lot of top 100 players. The profile of Georgetown is very different with him there. I would not count them out of anyone they pursue. He’s the Rodney Garner of last minute hotbox recruiting. I have not heard he’s HC in waiting if Ewing fails, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

I’ve heard that there will be an NIL package for all of our contributors, and that Murray was given something meaningful to think about in that regard. I get very queasy thinking about Nickelberry having the last word with Murray, but have to believe that we made a very good case. I tend to think he’s a better fit than most here do. He’s a good athlete with excellent length and speed. His decision-making and shot need improvement, but he’s worth the risk for the upside. I think Barnes could turn him into a great player with a pro future.

No, I’m in complete agreement with you about Murray’s potential. I think he would be a huge piece for this team next year if we had landed him. It’s disappointing that he is likely just following “Payday” Nickelberry to Georgetown, but we always knew it was a long shot and we weren’t the favorite. So, it’s not too shocking to hear.

That’s what happens when you go after LSU players. That’s why I don’t understand anyone that thought we legitimately had a shot at Phillips or Murray. Barnes isn’t going to run a shady program. And it’s pretty obvious why they even committed to LSU in the first place

I still think it’s a coin flip or better for us on the merits. As a guard with upside, how do you turn down Barnes record? I just know Nickleberry is a closer, and that makes me sweat.

Georgetown and Murray is following the dough. Tennessee, and he’s following the path that gives him more choices in the game of life. Just my opinion.

Our last 3 international recruits-

Uros- below average SEC player
Tamba- transferred
QD- transferred
I guess I meant players that we got directly from international, those three players played at least a year of high school in the US right? But yeah I forgot that Swartz was the one that had most of the ties there so that stinks to lose that

The truth of the matter is that any kid that would sign with Will Wade at LSU knowing his history, is probably not someone Barnes would want. The evidence against Wade was overwhelming and undeniable, yet these kids chose to sign?

Except Barnes did want Murray. We just didn’t get him. We got beat, plain and simple.

Barnes hoped that Murray was different. He gave him the benefit of the doubt in re-recruiting him. Murray chose a lesser coach and a lesser program. You do the math and figure out what the answer is. I think you’re wrong, but different opinions happen.

Eh, KC didn't really start becoming the alpha until the last third of the year. This is still a 20 win team under Barnes that will get bounced the first weekend in March.

He was averaging over 16 ppg in his first 7. He was pretty impressive until running into SEC play...only down games really where Villanova, Texas Tech and Arizona.

Lol love the narrative of Key "not being able to shoot" based off one bad year.

You realize before his 31.6% from 3 in 2020-21 that he shot 44.8% from 3 as a sophomore and 38.9% from 3 as a junior, right? And that he's a career 80% FT shooter? And he averages almost 4.5 rebounds as a 6-3 guy?

Not saying he'd be phenomenal, but some of y'all are acting like he's a scrub.
