Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Lol love the narrative of Key "not being able to shoot" based off one bad year.

You realize before his 31.6% from 3 in 2020-21 that he shot 44.8% from 3 as a sophomore and 38.9% from 3 as a junior, right? And that he's a career 80% FT shooter? And he averages almost 4.5 rebounds as a 6-3 guy?

Not saying he'd be phenomenal, but some of y'all are acting like he's a scrub.

give me some OG kush and I'm taking him to the woodshed in a game of horse

His 3pt% has gone down every year, which I think is enough reason to doubt his ability as a 3pt shooter. 4.5 rebounds per game likely doesn't translate to the SEC, as we saw with Anosike.

His 3pt % did not go down every year. As far as the rebounding goes, he’s been good at following his shot, and other’s outside shots. I don’t know how he’ll bounce back from a shoulder injury, nor how he’ll do against better guards.

I don't know...next year's squad will be about the growth of ZZ, Aidoo, Powell, Mashack more than anything else.

Santi, JJJ, and ON are good SEC players but none of them have shown a consistent ability to be elite. JJJ can be and has at times taken over games, still hope that he can do that on a night to night basis. Santi is great, but he's likely not going to really elevate more than what he is and what he is requires a really good PG that can penetrate and dish.

If ZZ can elevate in year 2 and fill more of the KC role OR if we land Yuri then we'll be pretty solid. Truth of the matter is the bulk of what we're losing is KC. BHH & Fulky were solid but their production really was only replacing what we lost when ON got hurt. So if ON returns to form and Aidoo can improve then we should be good there as well.

I don't know that Murray was going to be a top level scorer either...guy played more minutes than JJJ and his production was less.
Murray: 10ppg, 3rpg, 1.9apg, 1.1spg vs JJJ: 10.3ppg, 6rpg, 1.7apg, 1.4spg, 1.1bpg

I would have still wanted Murray though, don't get me wrong. But I think for -next year- he would have had less impact than landing Yuri and/or Phillips. We shall see who we do end up getting though.

From the beginning I figured it would be a tough sell for a transfer to go from SEC starter to off the bench

And I think that's all fair to say and feel. But people are acting like he would be just like Anosike with his production for UT, and I just don't believe it.

He had 18pts on 2/5 from 3 with 4 rebounds against Purdue in 20-21. 20pts on 4/7 shooting from 3 against Louisville in 19-20. Had 14pts on 1/2 shooting from 3 against TCU in 18-19. Had 12pts against Colorado without even making a 3 in 18-19. Had 11pts against Auburn as a freshman in 17-18.

On the flip side, also just had 3pts as a freshman against Indiana and 3pts in a second game against TCU in 18-19. But overall, he hasn't been trash at all against quality opponents.

I wouldn't be absolutely thrilled about landing him, but he would help, IMO.

Since he shot 44% as a soph, he shot 38% as a jr, then 31% as a senior.

Additionally, Key played in the MVC, which is usually a top 12 or even top 10 conference every season on KenPom. EJ Anosike played in the NEC, which is usually a bottom 5 or so conference on KenPom.

Imagine trying to justify his decision to play for a terrible HC who won six games last year.

Some of you are truly out of line with yourselves. Lol

Well, “every year” is different than every year except his Freshman year. He obviously trended up absurdly into the 45% year. This has been covered before, but he had a shoulder injury that became problematic. My larger concern is that he trends the direction of Lamonte and doesn’t bounce back.

Makur Maker chose a school that had only won 4 games. Everyone has their own reasons for doing things

You mean you're not excited over a 6'3 guard that shoots 31% from 3 and gets the majority of buckets inside?

1. Talk about hand picking a stat…he’s never shot 31% from 3 and he’s a career 37.4% 3pt shooter on 409 attempts, Admiral was 38.7% on 476 attempts, Turner was 34.1% on 502 attempts.

2. Getting buckets inside is something we struggled with tremendously, both from guards or bigs, he also gets to the line which is something we struggled with. He has 517 career FTA, far more than any other player on Tennessee’s roster last year.

its a lazy take…he had a really cold start to the year in OOC games, he came back and shot like 37% in conference play, he just started out the first 6/7 games something like 6/30 from deep which drug his average down. It was also a COVID shortened year so do with that what you will. But yea, acting like he’s a career 30% perimeter shooter is such a horrible take.

I posted it somewhere but he has like 13 games against P5 teams and Loyola who might as well be considered in that group, he averaged like 14ppg on 50% shooting and 38% from deep in those games iirc. He’s been asked to be a primary scorer for Indiana State so I would say there’s a good chance that being a bit more selective in shot selection and those % probably go up as well.
