Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

I honestly think we're a PG away from next year being really special. With what we have returning, landing Phillips, if we can just find someone to take over KC's role and split time with ZZ, I think we can have a really good year next year and make a run in the tourney.

Are you thinking we are trying to use that last scholarship for Hunter/Loften? Then if those don't work out do you think we will hold on to the scholarship for 2023? Also, have we had any more about Malachi Smith?
Yea the last spot they want a PG, struggling to gain traction with Lofton and Hunter appears to be a Texas lean. Smith isn’t a PG so I don’t see them pushing there.

I hope that our NIL package combined with adding Phillips to an already experienced and talented core will end up being attractive to Hunter. We might not promise him the minutes, but there is a pretty clear path to 25-30 MPG.

I would still say Texas as of today, but landing Phillips has given me some hope that with Spyre and our current roster we can make a pitch that is very convincing.

I’m guessing Texas has the ability to match any dollar amount, and Hunter himself said NIL wasn’t a big factor, so I doubt it comes down to that.

Yeah, I agree. I was just noting we could have a nice package if necessary. That’s why I also mentioned the fit. I think we’ll have a pretty nice roster that will be even more appealing with the addition of Phillips. I think there is an obvious fit as well.

Maybe he wants to stay in the Big 12 because he wants to play Iowa State lol. Who knows.

I still believe in Edwards to have a nice role off the bench with ZZ taking over starting duties, though obviously getting Hunter would be great.

I wouldn’t say we need Hunter in a bad way, but I do think we need an experienced PG. It would be nice if Edwards has the chance to redshirt and learn the system.
I love ZZ as a player, but I don't think he's ready to carry the load alone. I don't think BJE comes in ready to split that time with him. It doesn't have to be Hunter (I'd like it to be), but we do need a PG in a bad way IMO. At least if we want to take advantage of what we have returning and the addition of Phillips.

I think this is a fair assessment. I guess I’m just trying to temper expectations for myself. Hunter is a real factor, but I do think Texas ultimately lands him. We’re not getting any traction with Lofton as far as I can tell, so that means any other PG we add is likely coming from the high school ranks or international and I don’t think you can expect anyone like that to be any better prepared than Edwards will be.

The fact that there’s even a chance that our four star point guard could redshirt is still crazy to me. Five years ago he would’ve been thrown out there on day one. Crazy.

Edit: Nevermind, looks to be returning to SF....rip

Just looking at PGs in the portal still.

Sorry if this is a lame question, but has it been determined that Edwards just won't be ready? I had been under the impression that he was just a notch below Chandler. Now it seems folks have written him off as far as being able to contribute in year 1. I guess I don't stay on top of things like some do, but I'm not really sure what I missed.

Just never know…his ranking (around 100) would insinuate he’s likely not ready for a huge role, but some guys are more ready than others, won’t know until he’s here.

I think people are looking at the load KC carried this year and thinking they can't expect that from even a combination of ZZ and Edwards, which is probably true. But with Phillips and his offensive talent, hopefully they can be more traditional point guards and Phillips can be the rim attacker we need. The biggest thing we'll need from BJ will be defense. That said, the staff obviously still wants another PG and that's why we've offered a lot of the ones in the portal.

Depending on what happens with Hunter, if Edwards is contributing 15-20 MPG as a true freshmen, I’m going to hesitate a guess we’ll be pretty freaking good.

While I'd love to see Hunter jump on board, my mind can't accept or even entertain that this is a serious possibility. I'll be thrilled with Awaka and Jefferson. Adding a guy like Hunter? Nah, that's just not happening here.
