Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Sorry if this is a lame question, but has it been determined that Edwards just won't be ready? I had been under the impression that he was just a notch below Chandler. Now it seems folks have written him off as far as being able to contribute in year 1. I guess I don't stay on top of things like some do, but I'm not really sure what I missed.
He played Chandler nearly evenly in their matchups. I’d be surprised if Edwards can’t contribute day 1.

I think this is a fair assessment. I guess I’m just trying to temper expectations for myself. Hunter is a real factor, but I do think Texas ultimately lands him. We’re not getting any traction with Lofton as far as I can tell, so that means any other PG we add is likely coming from the high school ranks or international and I don’t think you can expect anyone like that to be any better prepared than Edwards will be.
If you can't get Hunter, Lofton, or someone else that can immediately contribute, then might as well save the scholarship. I just think we need that PG to have a legit chance at a run next year.

It's all a matter of opinion. I hope I'm wrong and BJE can come in and contribute immediately. I just don't believe he will. Anyone who guarantees you one way or the other is FOS.

Evenly ? I thought Edwards out played him and most importantly, got the win. But, that was one game and Edwards doesn't have the elite speed of Chandler, but I think he will average about 15 minutes a game as a freshman, if we don't sign another PG, maybe even if we do

While I'd love to see Hunter jump on board, my mind can't accept or even entertain that this is a serious possibility. I'll be thrilled with Awaka and Jefferson. Adding a guy like Hunter? Nah, that's just not happening here.

Well, we just added a guy named Julian Phillips who was more highly touted coming out of HS. So, I’m not sure I’d agree with adding guys like Hunter not being possible at Tennessee. We aren’t the leader for Hunter, but it’s still a realistic possibility he does end up here.

My post was a tad tongue-in-cheek and from the standpoint that to get two studs like that in a single class isn't something we see that often. UK, UNC, Duke sure. They expect it. At UT? It's not something I can wrap my head around. Too good to be true.

My concern at the point is in Edwards adjusting to the SEC grind. Even Chandler had his moments. I'd really love to add a veteran PG and bring Edwards along slowly....and no, I don't want to see Vescovi or JJJ at the point. Know they can, but I'd rather not go there.

Yeah, I agree. I was just noting we could have a nice package if necessary. That’s why I also mentioned the fit. I think we’ll have a pretty nice roster that will be even more appealing with the addition of Phillips. I think there is an obvious fit as well.

Maybe he wants to stay in the Big 12 because he wants to play Iowa State lol. Who knows.

Lots of TWSS

Any retaliatory Mookie memes on the barn's forum? Or are they quietly taking the L?

I agree it wouldn’t be ideal, but I think JJJ could run the point effectively. Would rather see him there and let vescovi run the motion

2 studs in a class hasn’t been unheard of since Barnes got here. Springer/Johnson, Chandler/BHH/Aidoo, etc

Florida gets Lofton.

Surprised that Osunniyi didn't commit as well if the reports about them wanting to be a package deal were true given that he visited Gainesville too.

If Hunter is a miss, it's definitely time to wrap up the PG search party and carry that scholarship into 2023. The remaining portal PG talent just isn't stout enough to be an appreciable step up from ZZ/Edwards, and I'd like to see what ZZ can do if given the reigns since he clearly seems like the kind of player who rises to the occasion.

I'll be shocked if BJE is getting 15 mpg if we land a transfer. ZZ isn't taking a hit to his minutes as a result of BJE's arrival, and no impact transfer is coming here to play less than 20 mpg at PG. Just not enough minutes at that spot. BJE can (and likely will) play off the ball, too, but Vescovi is going to play as many minutes as he can handle, there, with Key filling in the rest.

It’ll be interesting who gets more minutes between Key and BJE. Gotta think Key will likely get more at the start of the season (if healthy) and hopefully BJE will get better and earn more as the season goes on. Also wonder who will bring the ball up and initiate the offense when ZZ’s not in. Vescovi played so much better off ball. There will certainly be opportunity for BJE if he’s ready, with how tough Barnes is on young guys that is a big if though and will probably be predicated on defense

Not to toss in complexity, but in last year’s offense, the point is the guy with the ball. The cuts and screens adapt to a wing angle when a wing has the ball. The days of Barnes screaming at Bone three years in are remedied quite a bit when either wing can shoot as a first option, and the movement package is not dependent on the PG quarterbacking everything. BJE has a lot of the defensive attributes and footwork to play. I’m sure his minutes will be gated by TO’s and bad passes, as were Chandler’s. If Key is healthy and shooting well, I can see some of his minutes coming at the 3/1. The 3 side was full of open shots when they smothered Santi. I also see Phillips getting oh so many back door dunks for the same reason. I really like our experience next year. I think we’re going to draw a lot of half and full court pressure given the steals ZZ gave up against doubles. I think he’ll grow into it. I’m excited to see this team come together. Lots of ifs on growth and injury recoveries, but huge upside with a solid floor.

I’m guessing the staff feels similar, but how far down the “list” do you go before Santi or BJE is a better option?

Agreed. Outside of Hunter and Sheffield (who requires a waiver) I’m not sure I can even name another PG in the portal off the top of my head. I want a PG badly, but not badly enough to bring someone in that isn’t better than what we already have.

Pretty far honestly. It doesn’t have to be somebody who is clearly a better option than either of those, just an additional option. If ZZ is injured and there is foul trouble with those two, it’s trouble. An adequate ball handler. Likele would have been perfect as that option, wish he would have waited.

Edwards had the better and bigger team. Chandler's best teammate was 6'4 300 lb Omari Thomas.

Well we haven’t seen BJE so I’m not sure we can definitively say that, Santi has played PG at this level but we all agree is better off the ball. Even with an injury or foul trouble we have a plethora of guards and wings to then fill in with. I agree a guy like Likekele (many didn’t want him) would’ve been a nice option, but that’s where I’m saying how far down the list would you go before those guys become the best option. You’re gonna struggle to find someone good willing to come here and be 12th/13th option unless an injury or two happens.
