Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Pretty far honestly. It doesn’t have to be somebody who is clearly a better option than either of those, just an additional option. If ZZ is injured and there is foul trouble with those two, it’s trouble. An adequate ball handler. Likele would have been perfect as that option, wish he would have waited.

Exactly what kind of player wants to transfer in to be the fifth option at PG? If we do find that guy, maybe he can play cornerback too.

Agreed. Outside of Hunter and Sheffield (who requires a waiver) I’m not sure I can even name another PG in the portal off the top of my head. I want a PG badly, but not badly enough to bring someone in that isn’t better than what we already have.

At the very least you find an experienced guy who can confidently bring the ball up the court, beat a press and run the offense. If BJ and ZZ prove to be better, then so be it.

Well we haven’t seen BJE so I’m not sure we can definitively say that, Santi has played PG at this level but we all agree is better off the ball. Even with an injury or foul trouble we have a plethora of guards and wings to then fill in with. I agree a guy like Likekele (many didn’t want him) would’ve been a nice option, but that’s where I’m saying how far down the list would you go before those guys become the best option. You’re gonna struggle to find someone good willing to come here and be 12th/13th option unless an injury or two happens.
I understand that. I stand by my concern of PG depth if we don’t bring someone in - it’s obviously not my call.

This. If you have one year left to play, you aren’t looking to go somewhere where you are riding the bench unless an injury happens.
Unless you’re a one year player from a small school who’d like to experience P5 basketball. If that guy can competently dribble the basketball at the end of a game, I think it’s worth a shot in using the final spot rather than holding it. Even if he ends up averaging 5 mpg over the course of the season or something.

Of course this is all theoretical - I don’t know if that guy is out there, but I’m not a P5 basketball staff either. So many people here make the preemptive comment that “everyone would complain if we signed a guy that low ranked.” All I’m saying is that that wouldn’t be me if we rolled the dice on some obscure PG to fill the spot.

I think even at 5-10 MPG the standard should be higher than “competently dribble the basketball up court.” If that’s all we need, I’d rather just stick with what we have. Pretty much everyone on our roster can do that.

That’s a different argument. We’re not talking about a starting role. We’re talking about adding a depth piece waaaay down the list.
My op was referring to a starting role

But if we're just looking for depth pieces atp I'd almost rather find a 3&D guy.

My preferred plan is to find an experienced lead guard who can carry the burden and take pressure off to begin the year. Maybe ZZ/ BJ takes over by the end of the season.

Disagree. You saw what happened when Turner went out. Things turned into a sh*tshow pretty quickly when teams began putting pressure on SV.

Even now he still struggles going to his right. ZZ is quick but was very TO prone when he ran point.

Wish we had taken Cam Hayes.
The issue with Hayes is he is a multi-year player. I'd be fine with taking him, at this point in the process, and we've exhausted many other much better options, if he were a 1-year solution. But as it is, I still wouldn't take him, even now, solely because he has two years (maybe three) of eligibility, and I don't think he's good enough to occupy a roster spot for that long.

Mid year enrollees are a thing. We wouldn’t have been able to get Jarnell Stokes or Santiago Vescovi without going into those seasons with an open scholarship.
I understand that. But it’s happened what, twice in 10 years? I think that’s something to hope for if you have the spot, but not necessarily plan for. Of course, the staff may have intel about someone who is a possibility. Or there may be absolutely no one on that radar.
