Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

The Spring National signing date is April 17th. Where is UT roster wise especially considering we could have a couple defections if Jordan and Grant go pro? Basketball is a little harder to track than football that has a forum devoted to football recruiting. Too bad Kessler is off the table. Appreciate any info on any potential 2019 prospects.

when will grant and bone get their evals back, and their decisions be "final"?

May 29th is a big day

Just my opinion but I bet bone stays in to the end and then if not drafted he comes back

NBA Draft is June 20th...so if he's not decided to return to school on May 29th he's going to burn his last year even if he isn't drafted.

Oh nice! I like that change, NBA is such a different beast than the NFL.

There's 22 PGs just in the underclassmen declared right now for this NBA draft...I think Bone may go undrafted, with it being just 60 draft spots.

There were two I read, here is a link for one of them. And you are right he did not say Tennessee was not prioritizing him. I think I got caught up with what he was saying rather than anything else. So I guess if you look at the entirety (with him visiting and all) Tennessee could still be in the mix.

I mean, it could be that he isn’t visiting after all. I don’t know. Guess we’ll see if he shows up. Wouldn’t be the first (or second) time he’s cancelled.

Thanks for the complete list...didn't the German kid say he was going to visit UT? He's an interesting prospect.

Yeah, I think he's willing to be patient and see what happens with the draft/player attrition. I believe if someone leaves and a spot is available he'll be the likely prospect to take it of the 2019 class still out there.

If we lose Grant & Bone though I think it'll be him and then a potential Grad transfer.

Thanks for the list. I'm pretty sure Wiseman has already signed with Memphis.

So what's the deal with Gaines and Pember? I'm assuming both are "signed" and count against this class? Is Pember still going prep? Is Gaines a RS? If so, that essentially leaves us a class of 1? We burn 2 slots for guys that can't help us next year?

All three are signed according to 247, and I don't know that any of the 3 are necessarily going prep or to redshirt. Pember has all the offensive tools to contribute first day on campus, I think ideally he'd be the potential RS though just because you'd like a full year to help develop his body and add some size so he can handle being a big in the SEC.

Gaines I'm less familiar with seems to be a bit slim, but has length and size to be a good defender. It'll really come down to needs, can Gaines & Pember play early and give us minutes? Yes. Is that the ideal situation for either player? Probably not.

Won't know for sure until they are on campus in a few months and the staff can get them in the weight room and figure out how ready they are to contribute. From all accounts though Pember is a better offensive player than any other big on the team not named Grant already. He's basically a PG who shot up to the height he's at now, great shot and can handle the ball. Which I actually think could be awesome, a big who can knock down the 18' jumper when rolling off a pick would help keep the paint clear.

Gaines gains a good 20 or so pounds and he could be giving us 6-8 minutes a night. I think he's a bit more polished than Pons

Pember Highlights

He's really good offensively already with handling the ball, passing, and shooting. His biggest question mark is really is he big and strong enough to rebound and play inside.

Guess we try to fill holes as they come available with what's left in the transfer pool in June then. I don't see Barnes doing anything to hurt the future of Gaines and Pember. If he thinks they're not ready for SEC play and need a year, I'm sure he'll do that. Might be a rough season next year.

I think he'll tailor next year's style of play to the strengths of the team

if we lose both Grant & Bone, potential starters next season: James, Turner, Bowden, Pons, Walker (Johnson, Fulkerson, Burns first 3 off the bench) depending on how good James & Burns are (neither having seen college action yet) and then how much growth Pons/Johnson/Fulkerson make it could be a solid year or a really rough one. I think 20 wins is possible, but we won't be competing for the SEC.

Lots to speculate about...after the NBA draft we'll at least know if we're going to be replacing anyone else off the team. But if we lose both I for sure see at least one if not 2 Grad Transfers who can play immediately being brought in.

Im not sure Pember will ever contribute let alone as a freshman.

Ill also wait until I see what kinda roster we have next fall before I make a prediction but for 5 million a year we should at least expect 20 wins and an NCAA tournament birth.

Pember has the best outside shot of anyone I've seen but lacks in other areas. With time and strength he could be a poor man's Chandler Parsons.

The concern being that by the time we know for certain Bone and Grant are gone, will there be players that can help us still available? I'm not sure how the transfer situation operates, but I imagine the top players from that pool would have made a decision by then and off the market. Guess it's pointless to be concerned. Nothing can be done. We sit and wait I suppose.

I don't know, this year will be different. A lot of those guys may test NBA waters themselves, but would still be eligible to return to school if undrafted and pursue a grad transfer (I think?).

We'll find out this is the first NBA draft with the adjusted rules for returning to school...should be interesting

"Im not sure Pember will ever contribute let alone as a freshman."

Pember is a top 200 player in the country. He is a highly rated 3 star and the 5th ranked player in Tennessee. To say he may not contribute as a freshman is fair (and truthfully fair for all players not ranked in the top 50 or so - even DJ Burns who was a borderline top 100 wasn't ready to as a freshman). However, to say you don't think he may ever contribute is a gross exaggeration based on nothing. Gaines is actually the lowest ranked player in the signing class at 229. This is not a personal slight to you either as this seems to be a very common thought process on Pember. I just don't really see where it is coming from. Jason Jitoboh, who signed with Florida and who a ton of people would have been thrilled if he signed with Tennessee is ranked considerably lower than both Pember and Gaines at 277.
