Texas A&M/SEC megamerge thread extravaganza

The "distance factor" isn't as significant when the recruit knows he'll be playing close to home during his career.

One game, maybe two? Ok. we will agree to disagree. When the reason these kids want to come to Tennessee is to play in the SEC, I don't understand how adding a bunch of schools across the country (where they will be able to play closer to home every week, btw) is going to help.

Oh and the kids already know about the SEC, believe it or not. Even if they don't have the chance to watch Vandy vs Ole Miss on the SEC network every Saturday.

Gain, not because of Arkansas or SC, but getting to 12. We already have what we need with 12 teams. Adding 2 more, or 4 more changes nothing (besides ruining rivalry games, etc).

Let me ask you this, if the Big East added A&M and started raking in on all those TV dollars, would you be scared?

I've tried to hard many times. Harding is one of the more difficult feats to accomplish without the aid of proper medication.

Really? Really, that's how that got addressed? Cool, now at least I know where the limits are since they've changed.

Tennessee is one of the teams it should help most BECAUSE Tennessee has to recruit nationally. The visibility of having every game watched in that state, plus actually playing there every few years is huge for recruiting. The "distance factor" isn't as significant when the recruit knows he'll be playing close to home during his career.

The ESPN contract guarantees that all of UT's games with the exception of 1 PPV will be televised to a national audience. Last I checked, Texas is included in the national audience, so adding aTm to the SEC will generate absolutely zero additional exposure for us.

The bold is inaccurate. Tennessee's games are guaranteed to be televised, but not always to a national audience. If the game is shown on the SEC Network (the 11:20 am kickoff), then it is only shown where a network has picked up the local syndication. Also, ESPN also has contracts with several other conferences (ala the ACC), and ESPN shows those games in those markets and might not show an SEC game at the same time.

Good point. I was mistaken about that, but the exposure doesn't really change that much in TX. Just because the game is on doesn't mean they will necessarily watch it. Much in the same way I don't bend over backwards to watch Ole Miss every week even though they are in the same conference.

So, according to Joe SChad A&M has formally applied to join the SEC.

"Texas A&M formally announces it is applying to another conference (Yes, the SEC)"

In order for A&M to become an SEC member, 9 of the 12 university presidents would need to vote their approval......not guaranteed yet.
