That's racist!

We never had it, dad was a deacon and it was a no no. I did spend the night next door with my grandmother after I was around 12just to watch her at night. I had a friend spend the night who showed me how to wrap aluminum foil around the cable and it picked up hbo and the movie channel. Now that was privilege! Ha

Saw a movie called Prophecy (not the Walken one) about a mutant bear..scared the bajeebus out of me.

I think I'm getting closer to separation from the real racist Joe's on here. Today at the swim meet I let my baby girl hang out with two Mexican kids, one Black, and one Asian. I also sit and talked with the black girls dad, and ate a donut given to me by a Mexican woman! Boom!

:thud:

Partially it is. Yes. Quit sensationalizing the ****ing word and being offended that it is still in the circulation of the English vocabulary. Millennials and younger have heard the word from music, film, etc. most of the time. Not racism. They learn the meaning because it suddenly becomes offensive.

Do you realize that telling black people "don't do this, otherwise you're not allowed to complain when we call you n***ers" is the same type of paternalistic crap that helped cause these problems in the first place?

So are you saying that it's the white mans fault the word is still in circulation? At least we know your ears are closed.

I'm saying that when a white person gets in trouble for saying the n-word, responding with "oh, it's still black people's fault" is never going to go over well.

How about trying your best to refrain from using the word yourself, without getting on a high horse to tell other races how much outrage they're allowed to have?

white people haven't been connected to systematic oppression? are you retarded? Rome, Greece, Egypt, AMERICA. smh.

Another race was oppressing white people in America while calling them crackers and mayonnaise monkeys? Give me some dates on this

Since we're on the HBO subject today. How many folks remember this?

And how many folks felt old after seeing that?

Man... the simple things that take you back.... seeing that reminded me of watching HBO at my girlfriend's house while fondling boobs and heavy petting

Wont happen. Its cultural thing where, in a world where they don't really have much, they can call this their own. This is something they will cling to. Its only fair though. When your ancestors traded your ancestors away for some seashells and a bag of salt I can only assume you'd probably want to start fresh culturally.

Sociology 101 says the black community in America has been trying to develop its own cultural identity for a long time because of the whole slave trade thing Portugal started.

I wish that were true. You're giving people that use it as a slur way too much credit...shockingly.

you're blaming an incredibly small fraction of a race while an incredibly large portion of another race sensationalizes the word every single day. lol. Your way hasn't worked.

those seashells were collection items and in mint condition. Sir.

"Sensationalize" doesn't mean what you think it means, unless you're suggesting that white people calling black people "n***ers" are doing nothing wrong and black people are just overreacting. That would be an interesting stance to take.

I'm saying people using words as racial slurs are responsible for their own actions, rather than saying "Well look at these other people..." If it's not the n-word, they'd just use a different slur, because they are intending to belittle other races as you make excuses for them

Al Sharpton: "Maher doesn't get a pass" and I agree

I've been a fan of Bill Maher since way before Real Time. He's always played close to the edge of civility but this time he went over. I'm sure he instantly regretted what he said but you can't unring the bell. He has offered a sincere apology and maybe his show survives. I don't fee like it will though. If he is fired I won't rail against HBO. I hate racism in all its forms. If firing Bill is another step forward I can find something else to watch on Friday nights.

I'm not disagreeing, but at the same time there are pragmatics to consider. It's a valid criticism to say that if you don't like a word, stop using it--just from a practical perspective.

My daughter complained once that a creepy guy was oggling her breast. I pointed out that a lot of cleavage was showing.

She got the hint and tucked her cleavage away. It doesn't change the fact that there are creepy guys in the world, but it does change the fact that she was serving up cleavage to be oggled.
