It’s definitely upsetting… Nobody really should be facing any sort of racism, hurtful, disrespectful, hateful comments and threats. Those aren’t fans, those are trolls. It’s a real disservice to the people in our league, the organization, the players in the WNBA, but there are a lot of really good fans, whether they’ve been fans for 20-plus years or whether they are new fans in our league, I think continuing to uplift this league in a very positive light is the best thing we can do because there are so many great players, so many great teams, so many positive storylines that can be written and celebrated, and for me, that’s why I became a fan of this league because these people were my idols. I grew up wanting to be like them, so I think continuing to uplift and represent this league in a positive way is the best thing that we can do.

Bro, I like you. I think you are a good guy, but this is so unnecessarily hateful. It's kinda weird how much hate you have in your heart for lesbians. This is not the first rant.

Also, there is a difference between economic profit and accounting profit. Why are the values of WNBA teams increasing so much? Seattle Storm (Sue Bird's old team) sold for 15x the price it was bought for 20 years ago.

I like the question. My thoughts:
Purchase price and valuation are not always the same. In fact, as we routinely see with tech start ups, the price per share of stock doesn't make sense compared to the profitability of the company. Amazon was like this for a long time...may still be.
I am routinely writing contracts to purchase property below the valuation.

Sometimes people buy the potential. Sometimes people buy the reality. Sometimes people make emotionally driven purchase decisions.

ETA: THe WNBA is almost 30 years old????? I had no idea.

Well valuation is just an estimate of somethings worth. So purchase price is simply what a willing buyer is paying a willing seller. That can change from day to day, as you say.
A lot of emotion in buying/selling real estate.

I would guess expectations about the future value of these franchises is what's driving a lot of the increase, but that expected value is a legitimate calculation in economic profit.

That's how it's worked out in the NBA, too. You buy a franchise and the revenue is OK based on your purchase price, but they have been killer investments because the valuations and sale prices keep climbing like crazy.

I hope the owners make out like bandits. I am reminded of the old phrase when putting money into a retirement account..past performance is not a guarantee of future performance.

If those teams aren't profitable, at some point someone will be left holding the bag. Won't be any of us, though.

NBA is to the point where there are only a handful of potential single-buyers anymore. We're talking $5B for the big franchises and $3b-$4b for the smaller ones. So we're shifting to ownership groups, and maybe the next evolution is publicly trading the team like the Braves do (did you know you're talking to a baseball owner who may get stuck holding the bag? 😁 ). I think only 3 teams do that, but we all know the stock market is where you can turn if you get stuck upside down on a team.

And the NBA protects itself to some degree. They do the CBA's every 8 years or so, and adjust costs according to what's happening. 50% of revenue goes to the players and the players are the biggest expense, so their cost goes down if things dip.

Like you too Huff. You know that. Legitimately sorry if you feel offended on their behalf. I reread my post though...the only 2 adjectives i used to describe Sue were white and lesbian. She is clearly both of those things. Maybe I said something hateful in a previous post, if so I apologize. I don't hate lesbians and certainly dont hate gay folks either. I do think it isnt a coincidence though that C.C. has been treated the way she has because she is both white and straight in a league that is about 85% black and 85% lesbian. If the situation was reversed....nevermind . A reverse situation where an 85% straight white league abused a gay black woman could never even happen in 2024 America. Its impossible. No sense in discussing that part.

As far as Megan goes, i also called her nasty. She is in my opinion, in several ways. Mostly her anti- America attitude in the World Cups, trying to hijack a TEAM sport appearance for our national team and make it a months long social justice warrior mega-Leftist marathon. Kneeling, gay pride, BLM, you name it. She is all about it, all the time. Not her teammates, not actually winning, and damn sure not the red, white and blue she wore...sometimes.She was always in a hurry to take that jersey off that literally ANY female college soccer player in the US would die to wear just once in a game. She chose to make herself famous not based on her athletic performance...which was elite...but instead to be a female Colin Kapernik. Made millions of dollars for her activism. With that comes criticism IMO. Public figures especially those who make millions in public advertising etc are extremely open for criticism, moreso than the rest of us. They chose this.

I have a close family member who is gay, and I love her. She is absolutely nothing like Megan Rapinoe though thankfully. I dont know much about Sue Bird except that she was pretty hot when she was young. We are pretty close in age i think.

She said she almost definitely wasn't playing offseason basketball on 9/25, maybe before that.

Her playing overseas would also be a non-story. It's the WNBA offseason and lots of players do that. The "story" was marketed to low-info people who don't actually follow the WNBA and also won't take the 2 seconds to Google and find out that spending the offseason in Europe isn't "leaving"

Admittedly I didn't watch the whole video, but one thing stood out at me. When that one player was saying that the only reason that white people were interested in her was because she was a white player in a league of predominantly black athletes. And there are several that defended that statement, and even some on here that essentially do. My question is where were these 'racism' voices when one Tiger Woods burst onto the scene? Viewership of a sport dominated by predominantly white athletes suddenly saw an enormous increase of black viewership.

I didn't GAS about the WNBA before, nor during Caitlin Clark's tenure there, and I highly doubt there will be anything post CC that will garner my interest. Kind of like the black viewership in golf post TW.
