The 111th United States Open

Good job by Rory. He learned from the past and has been rock steady.

As far as Tiger, he may be contending but I just don't think he'll ever be dominant again.

It's definitely soft for an Open, Papa. The rough is soft and greens are soft. How many Open's do you see that in? My comment was more about the fact that it's never been done before in US Opens. I wonder why they didn't shave the greens or something after it rained.

The weather in DC has been crazy. It was 100+ last weekend then heavy thunderstorms at night. The greens look stressed so it's my belief that it's the weather, not the course for the low scores

Brother, they're throwing it in with mid irons from the heavy and stopping them in 8 feet.

I think the USGA thought, well, we've got it playing 7,500 yards, so that'll be difficult enough. Nope. 7,500 yards is no longer scary to pros hitting it well. What's scary is 6-inch rough, narrow fairways, and hard, lightning-fast greens, and Congressional had none of that. I'll bet this is the lowest aggregate score to par for the entire field in U.S. Open history.

Congrats to Rory....if he can continue to work on his consistency he'll have plenty of major championships in his future.

Give me Rory, Kuchar and DJ. Congressional is crazy long. If DJ can make some putts, he's got a good shot.

yup yup. DJ sucked it up, but Kuchar played very well until today and the guy I picked first, well he did alright you might say.

Nah. It's the course. There's some lame going on here. Freddie Jacobsen shoots 7 under on an open track not at Pinehurst, and it's playing like a Western Open. The number of 5 under type rounds over the weekend has been ridiculous. I've seen hordes of short - mid irons actually stop on the greens.

Yeah, the setup went a little too far in the other direction. I've never seen more balls spinning back and funneling to pins at an Open.

His combination of destroying the Field and Course, however, proves that it was him more than the course being easy. If the course was that easy, 2nd place wouldn't have been 8 strokes back.

IMO, though, Jason Day will win the most majors of all early 20somethings in the game today.

Didn't mean to take anything away from McIlroy's performance. It was spectacular. But one look at all of those red numbers makes it obvious that this wasn't one of the more difficult setups.

Rory was unreal, but this or '03 Olympia Fields are the worst us open set ups ever. It's stupid to compare this to '00 pebble bc then Tiger was just playing a different game. Here, Rory just played much better than the rest of the field. This was a boring us open to watch, and I'm mad at the usga about it.

I didn't think it was boring at all.

Boring in comparison to the last 6 us opens, which were unreal Sunday drama. Sunday at the us open is why it is the best tournament in golf. Today didn't prove that.

I can't go back that far. The '08 Open is what got me hooked on golf.

Why is it better than Augusta?

Augusta is amazing and a tradition unmatched, but almost every major golfer will tell you the us open is the best. Creates unreal drama, best fields to compete against, biggest nerves, winner is crowned champion of the toughest test in golf. The open brings in so many course and tourney variables that can just drive a golfer crazy. There is no day in golf like Sunday at the US Open.

'04 - Shinnecock dried green day, Phil and Goosen put on a show
'06 - winged foot insanity where Phil doubled 18 with a one shot lead.
'07 - oakmont dual bwtwn Tiger and Cabrera. Tiger missed 3 birdie chances on last 3 holes to try to tie.

It goes on and on....

I agree with 08. The playoff was the first time I ever intently watched golf. It was amazing.

Payne winning it in '99 was the greatest U.S Open in my book.
