The All Things Cycling Thread

Haven't driven my car since November 1st. Last time I drove a car at all was in March to Colorado. I ride everywhere. It helps that I live directly next door to my job.

I'm thinking of getting a dedicated commuter bike to carry my groceries, leisurely ride with friends, etc. I love the feel of the Kona Dew, but silver and black are the only 2014 color options. There was a 2013 orange option, but it was Texas "orange" and is now out of stock anyways. I'm also considering the Jamis Coda, which is a steel bike and I get a better price on it.

The Kona is the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. Theres

My team finished 2nd in the coed adventure triathlon today. I had the fastest mountain bike split. Missed out on 1st by less than a minute.

Nearly hit by 3 cars in a row today. Apparently since the first one didn't give me more than a foot, the other two didn't think they needed to either. Last one surely has a dent in their right quarter panel.

Also, riding my single speed around town is getting redundant. I need a bike dedicated to getting groceries and running errands. I also need a trailer to haul stuff, including my laundry.

How do you haul groceries and stuff now?

I have 2 panniers and a messenger bag. It's not ideal. I'd like to have two larger panniers for the rear and two smaller ones for the front. A good trailer is pricey and I don't really have aa place to store it.

Everyone was in a rush Saturday. I've never had a ride where I was buzzed so many times and seen so many cars almost hit the car in the other lane because they couldn't wait 10 seconds. I started riding in the middle of the lane just to protect people from themselves.

More visible in the middle of the lane, that's why I ride where the cars have their right wheels instead of riding along the strip.

Generally no strips here. I usually ride one or two feet inside the edge of the road. I rarely take the middle of a lane except in spots were I really don't want a car trying to pass, such as ahead of a sharp curve.

Yeah, generally 2-3 feet to the inside for me. Middle of the lane in high traffic areas or dangerous sections or crappy roads.

This. I've found if I ride 3' from the line people will wait till it's clear then go in the other lane to pass. If I get any closer to the line they will try to buzz by even if the other lane is clear.

Felt rep was in today, informed me that I should be racing a Felt next year and has given me extra incentive to do so. Now I need to find a second job for the winter.

After trail riding on my fat bike again today, I think I've got a lot of thinking to do this winter... Jamis Nemesis Pro 650b, Felt Edict Nine 50, or a lightweight fat bike to race on?

Too bad Great Smoky Mountain National Park isn't actually closed with this government shutdown. I'd head over there for some epic traffic-less riding if it were.

It isn't? All of our mountain bike trails on government land are closed. Dicks.

Campgrounds and stuff are closing, but the main road that goes through the park, which is the one I'm most interested in riding, isn't.

If you start near Gatlinburg and ride to the top of Clingman's Dome, it's essentially a 20 mile climb.

Sounds like fun. What's the elevation gain?

Blue Ridge Parkway is closed. I need to get out there.
