The All Things Cycling Thread

Sold my mtb. I rode it less then 10x this year. Still have my singlespeed mtb. Might try to get a 29er in the spring.

Iowa is now the first state to require vehicles passing bicycles to give a FULL LANE instead of just 3 feet.

What really happened: some people complained about cyclists so these lawmakers came up with a cunning bill so they could say they were "doing something." Said bill gets hammered in public meeting so they act like they really didn't mean it. Just drafting legislation for conversational purposes.

Interesting.

Heading up to Ray's Indoor MTB Park to do some riding. We were supposed to hit up Blue Mounds State Park, but it's probably closed from the shutdown and it's raining. This'll be fun.

so about two months I almost bought a bicycle but didn't bite the bullet. My latest sprained ankle from running the trails here has me ready to pull the trigger. I took the advice from earlier about a hardtail mtb (and it was actually repeated to me from the salesman). I'm looking at the Trek X-Caliber 4 right now. It's in a decent price range and I liked the feel of it. The salesman was knowledgeable, but he was really pushing the Trek hard. Should I look at something else in that $550-750 price range? One thing I want to do is not only ride trails, but ride the roads too. He recommended I could get additional wheels more adaptable to road riding for around $70. Does this make sense to y'all?

Makes a lot of sense. $70 sounds pretty cheap for a set of wheels, though.

is the Trek X-Caliber a good bike?

what accessories do I need immediately?

It's okay, but it may leave you wanting more. Only 75mm of travel is silly. If you intend on doing any off road riding then I'd look at something higher end, if you can swing it.

Helmet, gloves, shorts was a chamois in them, good shoes, and good pedals.

for now I want to stay below $800. I have no plans of becoming a bike-a-holic, I'm just going for an alternative to running all the time. I don't even know what 75mm of travel means.

I need all the help I can get

Edit: After looking up 75mm of travel, it really doesn't matter. I'm going to be biking over running trails, the only major issue I have is the sandiness of the area.

but I am tempted to step up to the 5 for $100 more. Seems like upgrades across the board, better braking, better shifters, and 100 mm of traveling. For just the regular sandy trails how important are these differences?

If the fork has a lockout I'd do it. They are important differences and probably well worth the $100. It's cheaper to invest now than to upgrade later.

???

A guy from the church I've done a few road rides with doesn't wear gloves or sunglasses. Seems a bit odd to me.

If you're riding off-road at all, you're going to want at least 100mm of fork travel.

I stopped wearing gloves on my road bike recently, because I have some awesome bar tape. It's not that uncommon. Definitely necessary for a beginner or mountain biking. I have some gnarly scars on my hand from the pavement.
