The All Things Cycling Thread

New bike is in. I had to change the housing to all black and then put some lizardskin h-bar tape on it. Did not even make it out of the shop without doing that.

Looks like a stress fracture. It's on the inside of the right chainstay where it meets the bottom bracket shell. Small and I probably wouldn't have caught it if my bike was any color but white.

Good thing they can fix those now.

Do they pay for the replacing?

Yeah, Felt just sends a replacement frameset. We've had to warranty 3 or 4 frames since I've beenat the shop, one was even 2 years past warranty and they still honored it. I have to call Pinarello about one on Monday, too, that was either damaged in shipping or packaging. There's no damage to the box that indicates shipping damage, though. That one will be a little more complicated. Most companies are really good about frame warranties. They make extra frames every year expecting to have a percentage of them warrantied.

I may have to send my frame to them for testing to determine cause and whether it is a warranty or maybe pictures will suffice if they've seen it before.

Surly is warrantying a bunch of Pugsley frames right now that have cracking issues in nearly the same place as mine, but those frames are steel.

So if someone comes in to get a warranty frame replacement, how much does it end up costing them?

Cost of build. $70-150. If it's a bike bought at our shop then we won't charge for the build/teardown. We've never had to warranty a bike purchased at our shop, though, until now. That's the same for all shops. If the frameset has to be sent in for inspection, the customer will have to pay for shipping. It's clearly spelled out in the warranty from the manufacturer (read Felt's last night).

Also, the frames Felt usually sends as replacements are higher end frames than original, unless they are top line frames being warrantied. At least that's been the result with the three previous warranties. The bike business is very, very good when it comes to warranties and customer service.

All warranties have to go through an authorized dealer of said bike manufacturer, however, we were able to warranty a Blue without being a dealer because there are none anywhere near us.

I don't think the shop I bought mine at sells Treks anymore.

Guy at another shop said that if the frame fails Trek will give you a new rig for 25% cost in lieu of replacement. Does that sound right?

There's a distinct possibility I might keep riding it until something breaks.

Sounds like a crash replacement program. I know a guy that got screwed by Trek last summer because of a broken Lemond.

One more day to hit 800 miles, VOLatile.

That's not happening. The crash, rain, and then subsequent flooding put an end to that real quick.

In good news, Felt has decided to warranty my frame and a replacement frameset is on the way. I should be on my road bike again by the time the flood waters recede.

I'm still in the running . . . for 500 miles.

How can you have flooding? I saw that everyone in middle America was under drought a few weeks ago.

Last year, maybe. I live right on the Mississippi, right where it bends east to west. The snow is melting from up north combined with 4 inches of rain in a day. The water rose pretty quick the days after my race and the race course was on an island... it was 75% under water a week later.

Ugh... more rain. It may cancel/postpone my mountain bike race on Sunday... that wouldn't be such a bad thing since I have not really put any miles on since the last race. Replacement frame will be here on Monday.
