The Arkansas Postgame Report

He has next year to prove it. He'll have Stokes as a Jr, McRae as a Sr, Maymon as a 5th year Sr, Golden as a Sr, Richardson as a Jr, Moore as a Sophomore, Hubbs as a freshman and a bunch of other role players with playing time. Provided that he doesn't have key players with numerous injuries again, there is zero reason this team shouldn't make the tourney even without a legit PG. If he can't get that team with that kind of talent and experience to the tourney then he should be fired.

i will agree with you on that

Give him enough time to get all of his recruits and go from there. No leftovers from the other guy

Why should it take any longer than three years to tell if a coach is going to get it done? If we can do it in football, we can certainly do it in basketball.

1. Turnovers. Simple as that. Anybody that says we didn't need Golden could see that we have no else. We couldn't handle Arkansas' defensive pressure. They were too good.

2. Skylar should apologize to his team for awful defense. Three critical defensive possessions late in the 2nd half when UT was trying to make a run sealed the deal for Arkansas. That horrible charge attempt was an embarrassment. Martin should be forced by Dave Hart to give a proper explanation why he has benched every player that's played for him in his tenure for bad defense at some point, but McBee gets a pass. That was embarrassing.

3. Kenny Hall played well today. He had some nice plays when it almost got out of hand and made it a game. He is incredibly frustrating, but it was nice to get a good game out of him.

4. Jordan McRae has hit a wall. Asking him to run the point and be the primary scorer has taken it out of him. His legs aren't underneath him. Hopefully he can find his shot back because McRae has to score for this team.

5. Martin's inability to get Jarnell the ball on a consistent basis has been horrible. He's a great passer, but because this team just stands around we don't see it. If you don't cut on offense, you don't play. That should be the stance.

6. UT just didn't handle Arkansas' ability to dribble into the lane. They looked lost all day. The bigs just didn't rotate well today. McRae/Moore/Richardson/McBee just couldn't keep them out of the lane and too many times went over the screen when Arkansas kept getting to the lane. Have to adjust defensively. I don't know why Martin didn't.

7. Bernard King Player of the Game: Jarnell Stokes. He rebounded well with 10 and had a double-double. His D was inconsistent, but wasn't all his fault because the guards didn't defend well. He was 6-7 shooting, and 6-9 from the free throw line. With Stokes, you take that all day.

8. UT's D is not aggressive enough. One steal today? That's awful. Their length should give them five automatically. I know you want to stop everything in front, but you have to be more aggressive, especially with a stalling offense.

9. A positive? UT took the ball to the hole. That was a good sign and resulted in 24 free throw attempts. I actually thought, outside the turnovers, UT did pretty decent on offense. It was inconsistent, but UT did a better job being aggressive and getting in the lane.

10. UT lost. It sucks. They (again) had chances and was embarrassing to watch in the first half. I'm disconcerted with their defense right now. This team needs Golden. We really needed this road win. But UT has a very winnable two games this week. If UT wins those two, that's 4-1 in your last five. It's a blown opportunity, but you got to keep your head up. Not all is lost.

Go DITTO >>

He's going to get at least 3 years. If he doesn't make the tourney with that roster then it's a pretty good chance he'll never make it.

I see no reason to believe that Cuonzo will suddenly start making smart coaching decisions. Past is prologue.

This team is not only a poor ball handling group from the standpoint of dribbling, but passing is especially poor, especially their entry passes, which are usually attempted from very bad angles.

I feel that this team is a mess..they either get blown out or can barely scrape out a win..it's ridiculous.

I watched the whole game and they make no adjustments..Halftime I saw no improvements with the team. They still have no ball handling skills and they turn the ball over too much. Stokes shouldn't be playing so softly. Just my two cents...

Stick a fork in this year, it's done. We will likely get bounced out early in the SEC tourney and will make the NIT if we are lucky.

Best thing for UT is to hope Martin gets it done next year and makes the tourney. I don't have any faith that our AD will go for a proven coach if Martin is fired.

I feel that all comes down to coaching. I believe Cuonzo is in over his head.

What is it that we can't seem to come up with a true point guard? Then in football it's a running back. Go figure.

we will probably not go for a proven coach. I am hoping we bring back Pearl once his suspension is over.

I don't see us even making the NIT this year.We suck..and even if we did we'd get knocked out by MTSU like last year. Why as Tennessee fans do we want that?

I think the whole athletic dept is just doomed. It all started when we fired Fulmer..Maybe he is into VOODOO and cursed us...j/k lol

Well you know, he could hire Pearl back if he fired Martin after his third season.

#3, If he could do that every game, we would be a tougher out. Instead, we get it about every 5-6 games if that.

#4, McRae was basically a no-show two games in a row. You aren't beating many teams with Golden on the bench and McRae no showing.

#6, Our help side defense sucked all day. Knight talked about it a couple of times and we just looked poorly prepared and lost. That's on Martin.

#8, If you are going to be a methodical offensive team then you need to find other ways to get points. We rarely, if ever, get steals and transition baskets. This team would be so much better if they could do that. I miss that tremendously from the Pearl era. We used to get a lot of steals and easy baskets via transition just like Ark gets.

As I've been saying since early Dec, this is a NIT team at best. Nothing has changed my mind. They're a mentally fragile team and even moreso on the road.

Agreed. God bless Kenny Hall but he's barely a D1 player if he is at all. Jarnell definitely coming into his own. I got blasted for saying this after the Vandy game but this is a bad basketball team as evidenced by poor offense, defensive lapses and utter inability to take care of the ball even after recognizing/knowing pressure is coming. Already ready for next year, Maymon return and infusion if young talent (read: Mr Hubbs)

I could really give a damn about making the NIT. If you can't make the top half of our conference and be one of the so-called 64 or 65, whatever it is now, best teams in the country with our resources, there is little consolation in going to the NIT.

This.

He will probably get them to the tournament next season, where they will promptly blow it. Which still buys him another year with an inexperienced roster.

Nobody was more pleased than I that Coach Zo was named HC. Nobody is more disappointed than I am at the results this season. In the second season you start seeing how teams react to what they saw in his base O and D, as well as his philosphies from the first season. They adjusted, he hasn't. He now has less to work with due to the injuries, but also because he did not recruit a decent PG before last season and before this season. Juco's are full of them. A PG just has to be reasonably good running the O and on D, not great, in this O. No excuses for not having one.

Thanks for the analysis. OP. I won't analyze games anymore - too many things wrong to bother.

I would be for that, but doubt it would happen. Our AD has mincy little balls and it would take giant ones for them to make that move.

We are on the same page with our thoughts on this as well as our favorite teams.

I agree. I don't really want to go to the NIT just to be embarrassed by some school we should be destroying..
