1. Turnovers. Simple as that. Anybody that says we didn't need Golden could see that we have no else. We couldn't handle Arkansas' defensive pressure. They were too good.
2. Skylar should apologize to his team for awful defense. Three critical defensive possessions late in the 2nd half when UT was trying to make a run sealed the deal for Arkansas. That horrible charge attempt was an embarrassment. Martin should be forced by Dave Hart to give a proper explanation why he has benched every player that's played for him in his tenure for bad defense at some point, but McBee gets a pass. That was embarrassing.
3. Kenny Hall played well today. He had some nice plays when it almost got out of hand and made it a game. He is incredibly frustrating, but it was nice to get a good game out of him.
4. Jordan McRae has hit a wall. Asking him to run the point and be the primary scorer has taken it out of him. His legs aren't underneath him. Hopefully he can find his shot back because McRae has to score for this team.
5. Martin's inability to get Jarnell the ball on a consistent basis has been horrible. He's a great passer, but because this team just stands around we don't see it. If you don't cut on offense, you don't play. That should be the stance.
6. UT just didn't handle Arkansas' ability to dribble into the lane. They looked lost all day. The bigs just didn't rotate well today. McRae/Moore/Richardson/McBee just couldn't keep them out of the lane and too many times went over the screen when Arkansas kept getting to the lane. Have to adjust defensively. I don't know why Martin didn't.
7. Bernard King Player of the Game: Jarnell Stokes. He rebounded well with 10 and had a double-double. His D was inconsistent, but wasn't all his fault because the guards didn't defend well. He was 6-7 shooting, and 6-9 from the free throw line. With Stokes, you take that all day.
8. UT's D is not aggressive enough. One steal today? That's awful. Their length should give them five automatically. I know you want to stop everything in front, but you have to be more aggressive, especially with a stalling offense.
9. A positive? UT took the ball to the hole. That was a good sign and resulted in 24 free throw attempts. I actually thought, outside the turnovers, UT did pretty decent on offense. It was inconsistent, but UT did a better job being aggressive and getting in the lane.
10. UT lost. It sucks. They (again) had chances and was embarrassing to watch in the first half. I'm disconcerted with their defense right now. This team needs Golden. We really needed this road win. But UT has a very winnable two games this week. If UT wins those two, that's 4-1 in your last five. It's a blown opportunity, but you got to keep your head up. Not all is lost.
Go Vols!!! :hi:
I say it following every loss...TOs and FTs. Well, today, it was only the TOs, so perhaps that's the silver lining.
Skylar is abysmal at this point and I find it offensive that he gets minutes at all, let alone 19 minutes. When he has the ball outside of anything but a spot shot, he can't wait to get rid of it as if it were a nuclear warhead. His defense is a joke and his sole contribution at this point is five fouls (which his terrible defense allows him to exercise).
Kenny looks like a crippled, 50 year old Robert Parrish one minute, and a decent contributor the next. He is just an enigma who hasn't, nor ever will put it all together. This all despite his decent moments today.
Jordan can't play PG, be relied upon as primary perimeter scorer, and be asked to play respectable defense. That's too much for him, and you're right, he's hit a wall.
I'm so sick of a defensive philosohy predicated on not generating TOs, especially when we are so prone to committing them. It's so disheartening to see our TO differential in our losses. If we coukd generate some of our own, it could help to mask the fact that we don't value possessions offensively. We had one steal to Arky's 12. That's awful. You should luck into more than one steal.
I agree we miss Golden from a scoring standpoint, but I still believe Lopez is a better ball-handler and distributor. Trae just has more natural offensive talent. He made several nice passes today that just weren't finished by our bigs. He had two TOs that looked bad, but he doesn't have a ton of game experience, so hopefully they are learning experiences. He just doesn't have the scoring ability Golden brings. The problem is, if Trae isn't scoring, he generally isn't doing a whole lot else either.
Overall, this game can be summed up by our first three possessions of the second half. We committed three TOs, didn't get a shot attempt (including a shot clock violation), and didn't even get the ball inside the three-point line. That's a sign of no urgency and confidence; two things this team greatly lacks on the road. 20 TOs vs 8 TOs won't win many games either.
