The Atlanta Braves (thread 1)

As much as I don't want it to end this way, Chipper trying to come back would cripple the Braves. They can't go out and acquire someone to man 3B in the off chance that Chipper returns to health. If he's healthy, he would play. However, we can't enter next season with that big a question mark concerning 3B considering no one currently in the system is close to being a MLB 3B.

Also, the next time Chipper works out very well may be the first. I don't see him grinding out rehab every day, especially at 38-39 years old.

As for the remainder of this season, Prado is good defensively at 3B. The difference is Chip vs. Infante in the lineup as V-torix (does that work?) stated. I don't think the Braves make a move to fill Chipper's spot--due to lack of availability and also confidence in Infante. However, the bench losing Infante definitely hurts. I think that loss is being underestimated. I wouldn't be surprised if the Braves made a move to acquire a Melvin Mora/Ty Wiggington/Ronnie Belliard type of player. Not necessarily one of those names, obviously, but a mini-Omar Infante to fill that utility role.

I think he will retire. He'd be foolish to come back in my opinion. If this were five years ago then I would say go for it, but he is nearing the end of his career one way or another, and a comeback would only hurt the team if they are afraid to sign a 3B. I wonder if Glaus at third and Adam Dunn at first is realistic. It certainly wouldn't be ideal, but it might help for this year. Plus, he is the only guy I heard of being placed on waivers. Probably a terrible idea anyway since I'm not sure Glaus can still play third base and Dunn can be a defensive liability. The Braves don't need any more errors.

From a business standpoint, there's a good case to be made from both the Braves and Chipper's perspective that it would be best if he didn't try to come back. I think they might be able to get the contract paid off by insurance.

Yep. And just because he's been hot for two weeks doesn't mean that the last year and a half didn't happen. The odds are way against him going through a long rehab and then coming back and having what he thinks of as a Chipper Jones-type season. I would sure hate to see his career end like that, but I'd also hate to see him rehab it all winter, hit .220 for awhile next year, and then get hurt again and have to retire.

I mean, realistically, what was the chance going to be that Chipper's career wouldn't end with an injury?

If heyward hits 3rd, Glaus almost has to hit 4th to break up the lefthanded bats.

That might just be exactly what Glaus needs - maybe he'll see better pitches and feel more confident in the 4 spot.

Glaus can hardly handle 1B so I don't see a move to 3B. Also, Dunn didn't make it to us on waivers and certainly won't clear them.

One thing about it...if he does go out, he went out on probably the best play he has ever made...He has been one helluva player. Always injury prone, but definitely one of the best in our generation. Never associated with performance enhancers, and a life long Brave....what else could you ask for as a fan?

Honestly, I'd be kind of surprised if he didn't try to come back. Assuming he likes whom the Braves hire as manager.

I fully expect Chipper to try and come back....No way he lets it end like that.

Chipper's getting up there in age and his body takes a lot longer to recover from these types of things than a young gun. I'll give it to him that he tries to come back I just don't think his body will let him

I just read on the internet that Chipper's season is over and out with an ACL. Hope that's not the way he wants to go out. He's been a very good player for the Braves. I hope he decides to come back for another year. He's got an MVP plus hit over.300.
I also believe he was around when the Braves beat the Indians in the 1995 World Series. If so, he's got a WS ring! The Braves still have some power left. There are 3-4 guys on the team that when 2 or 3 of them get on a roll can carry the team for a 4-5 games. Just hope the Braves can add to their lead down the stretch. They'll need it going into September. GO BRAVES!!!!! Hope to see Chipper's number retired in Atlamta.

I agree. I think he will try to come back...Now whether that come back is succesful or not is a whole other story.

You could make a good argument that Chipper has had the greatest career of any Atlanta Brave ever (considering that Aaron only spent the back half of his career in Atlanta), so I don't think you have to worry very much about that.

. . . and just in case the baseball gods hadn't crapped on Braves fans enough in the past few days with Medlen and Chipper going down - the Dodgers just blew a 9-2 lead to the Phillies.

You've got to be kidding me. I saw it at 9-2 and never looked back in.

You've got to hand it to the Phillies. They're banged up at least as bad as Atlanta and they just keep on winning.

On a more positive note, 23 years ago today the Braves traded Doyle Alexander to the Tigers for a certain prospect.

It's not the front office's fault. MLB allowed a guy with no liquidity to buy the Dodgers. Now LA is a major market team with a 95 million dollar payroll and a bleak future.

MLB doesn't want owners who will invest in their teams, ie drive up payroll (Mark Cuban). They want guys and corporations who view teams as only investments.

I disagree. Its the entire front office's fault including the McCourt conglomerate. Ned Colletti is one of the bigger dumb asses in all of baseball. They draft poorly and negotiate contracts poorly. They need a house cleaning ASAP...This includes the player development folks.

Tonight's lineup:

Infante
Heyward
Gonzalez
McCann
Glaus
Hinske
Conrad
Ankiel
Hudson

I really think Prado is going to get plugged into the #3 spot once he comes off the DL this weekend. Otherwise, we'd already be seeing Heyward hitting 3rd.

Take it for what it's worth, but this doesn't sound like a guy who's ready to retire . . .

Jones said Friday he will rehabilitate the knee with plans to make a comeback attempt in spring training. He said he won’t make a decision on whether his career will continue until he knows how his knee will hold up.
“I’m going to go through this rehab process, just like I was trying to get ready for spring training,” Jones said. “I don’t know how the knee is going to respond. When I was 23 years old, I lost a step because of this surgery. If I lose another step, I’ll be going backwards. I don’t know how all that is going to turn out. I’m going to try my best to rehab to get it ready for spring training and we’ll see how it feels after that.”
He anticipates after a six-month rehab to be in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. in March.
