It's worked for a lot of other coaches. Cal's denial that he knew Rose's brother flew numerous times on the team plan worked, as did his story from UMASS. Even Pearl's infamous taped student athlete conversation about being given money and a vehicle was overcome by the denial of the coach. The "who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes" defense has a history of working with the NCAA .
I have no illusions that the NCAA is fair. I firmly believe they are selective of who they punish and the severity of punishment. Tressel should be buried, but I highly doubt he will be. That said, universities and coaches have submitted to the NCAA as the governing body of college athletics. Pearl committed a major violation and got caught. Now he's going to be punished. History shows he will get at least a one year show-cause, most likely two. Keeping him does more harm than good.
