The disney insanity continues

They pay Reedy Creek $105 million per year in taxes. They don't pay for their own roads, sewage, power plants, police, fire department, etc with pixie dust. If the law takes effect that then becomes the burden of Orange county.

And Orange County can collect more taxes from Disney.

Well then tax the hell out of em. They have a sweetheart deal with tens of billions of revenue and a paltry $100M in taxes.

Would did you libs become so anti tax for corporate America?

It is a stunt, that said Disney shouldn’t be living under different rules.
I'm not totally up to speed on this, but from what I gather Disney lives under different rules because they agreed to provide many of the services typically provided by the government. Seems like a corporate entity taking over those government functions would be a conservative ideal. Now they are being punished by the "conservative" legislature of florida for exercising corporate speech.

Right, and we all know how well local governments handle taxes and infrastructure..

I'm guessing a road Disney gets built for $10 million will cost $30 million after all the bureaucrats hash it around. It'll also take 3 times as long

Also, now the tax payers will assume the $1 billion debt of Reedy Creek.

But hey, the government always handles things better than the private sector.. At least that's what liberals always tell me.

Of course Disney builds it for less, they are excused from the red tape the rest of the world takes on.

At the end of the day, Disney shouldn’t be playing by different rules than everyone else.

Where the money comes from, Disney or county residents, is something that will get decided by county officials and by extension the residents.

Are all companies able to choose this option?

My conservative nature is what makes me so against this. I can't see a true conservative wanting to "tax the hell" out of the states largest employer over hurt feelings.

Hey, Publix offers same sex benefits to the partners of their employees. Maybe DeSantis should seize the corporation and turn it over to the Lakeland town council.

Private/Public Contracts are "lifelong and ironclad". The USC is a living document meant to be shaped and molded to the "times"

Can we all form an alliance with some favorable state gov and have our own little "kingdom"?

The amount I want them or don’t want them taxed is a different conversation than should they have to be playing by the same rules as other businesses.

Is that kingdom still subject to state and federal law?
Still subject to federal law. Just like Disney. As to the state, it depends on what concessions the legislature gives you.

I guess you're free to go get whatever concessions you want from the federal government too.

All I can say is "elections have consequences"

Personally I think all this is overblown by both sides, but watching it play in real life is fascinating.

Have you reading the 7 page bill that lit this shitstorm? I posted it.

Can you bring 80,000 jobs to the state? If so then you probably can.

Reedy Creek, signed into law by a Republican governor, supported by conservatives for half a century suddenly makes no sense. Strange the sudden turn of events.

I'm curious what numbers have been laid out in terms of economic benefit to the state? I swear I can't find the data they've provided anywhere.

Perhaps he could if you gave him 75 years and all these special rules to work with. If not him, perhaps someone else.

So every company, not just "woke" ones? Like tax abatement for Trump properties that have been a huge boost to formerly run down sections of NYC, the BMW factory that chose South Carolina over Germany and brought hundreds of new jobs.. you want all that unwound, correct?

They do unwind eventually. Disney got some sucker FLA lawyers to give them life 55 years ago

Why would it be unwound? Are you saying other companies shouldn’t get these opportunities? Just particular ones?

On a side note. Run-on sentence coming: If more states decided they wanted to pursue more opportunities like the Disney deal where they are incentivized to locate to an area, provide thousand of jobs, 100s of millions in local revenue and sales taxes, and attract other businesses by investing in the resources and essentially taking the burden of providing typical municipal services off the local and state governments in exchange for a reduced tax rate, I'm all for it.

If companies think they'll make that investment and get the rug pulled out from under them the minute they engage in "corporate speech" the party i power at the moment doesnt favor, you won't see companies making those types of investments.
