The disney insanity continues

Everyone that feels this strongly about Disney's stance, take sone time to review Human Rights Campaign and Freedom for All Americans. In response to the Don't Say Gay bill, these 220 corporations have joined this organization to protest. You have a lot of homework to try and target all these companies that are standing with Disney.

Don't shop at Target

This just scratches the surface. It'll be a full time job if anyone is serious about punishing woke companies.

Personally, I haven't read the whole Don't Say bill, but what I have read I really don't disagree with. I don't think there is a scenario where kindergarten teachers should address any type of sexuality. Call it the Don't Say Hetero bill if you like.

But the Disney issue is really about DeSantis getting free publicity to run for President and it's been perfect for taking the focus off the big gerrymandering restructuring they just pulled off. DeSantis is putting his citizens in a worse financial position for the free publicly (if this actually comes to fruition, which I bet it won't).

Can you share the Don't Say Gay bill? I can't find it anywhere and that is the only bill I want to read.

You're a good poster. Sometimes we agree and sometimes we don't. I just don't think we need employees bullying management to take political stances. Then large corporations trying to openly use bully pulpits in influencing policy decisions. I don't care who they are, even my own global employer.

I think you've got me all wrong, I'm not agreeing with their capitulation. I'm only pointing out that they sat on it and tried not to weigh in and felt compelled to ONLY AFTER the blowback for not doing so. The employee revolt or the amount is clearly debatable but again, it was enough.

Truthfully, I don't even GAS about Disney - I'm just astonished that the "pro business" right is actively supporting a politician targeting one company out of 150+ for revenge, simply for disagreeing with him.

I've heard lots of "buuuuuts" and hemming and hawing around that immovable fact, but read that last sentence again and tell me with a straight face that you'll roll over and shrug when the shoe is on the other foot.

I don't want this to become a regular pattern but a couple of things 1) you got California employees trying to tell Florida what they need to do and 2) if DeSantis singled them out to make them different from other companies I would have more of a problem with it.

I haven't really looked at the financial impact of the law that some of you are discussing.

This is like saying you don’t like chicken nuggets because you think feathers are gross.

If you’re picking your vacation destinations based on cable news coverage, getting out from in front of the TV and hiking to a waterfall might do you some good.
Nope. I am basing my decision to avoid Portland due to visits by Family members, especially one who lived there for several years ad tells me how it has changed for the worse.
Try again

Lost subscribers in Q1, forecasted to lose 2MM more subscribers in Q2. It's a growth stock that trades at a high multiple. When the growth stops, it crashes pretty hard.
For me, it isn’t about their wokeness. It all comes down to the absolute lameness of their new offerings. Very few movies I care about seeing and most of their “Netflix Originals” are extreme snooze fests.

Saw this and thought it was worth a read.

There’s a lot of misinformation and confusion about what the end of Disney’s Reedy Creek district means for the company and for taxpayers.

Here’s what I know, after talking to lobbyists, lawyers and tax officials:
For those of you who haven’t heard, Reedy Creek is the special tax district of Walt Disney World. It’s essentially its own city. Disney pays taxes to Reedy Creek, which operates a fire department, planning department, sewer treatment plant and public works department. Disney controls Reedy Creek, which means if they want to build a new hotel or highway, they just have to ask themselves for permission.

The biggest loss for Disney is the end of that control. It’s a lot easier to ask yourself for permission than to go to the county. While they already follow all laws and building codes and they’ll still get everything they want, it’s going to slow the process down. Potholes might develop on roads that they no longer pave themselves. They can’t just call a meeting or alter their comprehensive plan on a random Friday. They also can’t quickly finance new public projects like a fire station.

The bigger issue for everyone else is the tax revenue. Disney already pays the same local property taxes as every other landowner. Reedy Creek added its own tax on top of that to pay for its projects. That tax – $163 million per year – is illegal outside of the district. When Reedy Creek goes away, that tax goes away, and Orange and Osceola Counties can’t do anything to get it back.
However, the counties will now be responsible for all of the services Reedy Creek provides and all of the debt it has accumulated. They can’t raise sales taxes or impact fees. So, the counties will have to raise property taxes to make up the difference. They must tax every property equally – not just Disney – and therefore it’s expected that property taxes in Orange County will rise as much as 25% next June. Osceola, much smaller and less wealthy, is still working on its figures.

Lawyers largely agree that the state followed all the laws while doing this. They agree Disney may sue, but probably doesn’t have much ground to stand on. Some believe a vote of residents or delegates from the district is required to make this legal. That doesn’t appear to be the case here because a vote was never held to implement the district 55 years ago.

Essentially, Disney will lose some control of its property, and get a $163 million per year tax break and ~$1 billion of debt passed onto taxpayers. Some things will be negotiated – Disney still controls Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, two actual towns within RCID. Lawmakers might backtrack from this plan during the next session now that they’re realizing what they’ve done. However, aside from maybe taking away the company’s ability to build a nuclear plant, we have yet to hear how this benefits Florida and especially the local residents in any way.

The residents, by the way, had no say in this vote, no say in their property taxes going through the roof, and no desire to have their communities staring at financial ruin thanks to 72 hours of orchestrated revenge

End of Reedy Creek: Disney won’t pay more taxes, but you will

Just total ineptitude. Acting irrationally off emotion and hysteria.

So I'm guessing that Disney doesn't want that little fact known when the Reedy Creek deal is cancelled? Disney has stuck its wanker in an alligators mouth and they know it. There is a reason they have gone silent over this issue, and they know that they poked the bear and the bear poked back. I love it when a big corporation decides it can interject woke ideology into a state and the state fights back.

So, you won’t mind when democrats target conservative acting corps.

I personally think the special tax situation/ tax break thing is BS anyway. So let’s eliminate the “before 1968” exemption. while we’re at it let’s do away with tax eximptions for charities and churches too.

Abolutely agre. It puts states and municipalities in bidding wars trying to entice the businesses to relocate there. They need to eliminate the tax-free municipal bonds for those purposes as well. And stop giving money and land to billionaire sports teams owners.

So does this constitutional standard apply outside of Florida? Could the Biden administration's numerous comments about the fossil fuel industry including wanting to "bankrupt" them be used to overturn the shutdown of Keystone pipeline and other anti-oil measures enacted since he was sworn in?

Does it matter that the bill doesn't require DeSantis' signature to become law? Like the federal government and most states, after a bill is passed by the FL legislative branch the governor can veto, sign or do nothing at which the bill becomes law after a set time.

Based on your posting of comments from legislators, does this speech limit also apply to them? Is it just public comments that are of concern or is debate on the floor during sessions also monitored?

Link? I can't find the quote. Is it because they took a free speech stance against him politically?

Anyhow. My guess is that you're not one of the people whose taxes are going up by 25% next year, easy to feign outrage and play loose with other peoples money when you've got no skin in the game.
Are you all in the impact zone?

For me, it isn’t about their wokeness. It all comes down to the absolute lameness of their new offerings. Very few movies I care about seeing and most of their “Netflix Originals” are extreme snooze fests.

Netflix's 40% stock loss this week has nothing to do with wokeness. It has to do with more competing streaming services competing for less consumer dollars because of this Biden economy.

Lots of factors. They lost about 1m subscribers for cutting off Russia

Partially but I would say that the Russia number was already baked into the numbers (and that was one of the reasons for the stock price decline in the weeks leading to the earnings release). The 40% decline was poor Q2 guidance as result of the economy/competing products.

So Disney gets a windfall. Then why are they complaining and stock dropping like a rock?

The district will impose the needed taxes on this dynamic situation.

Their stock price decline had little to do with this or wokeness. It has almost everything to do with the economy led by the vegetable in the White House
