The eternal QB debate (merged)

Kiffin is fine. Haven't questioned anything he's done so far. A competent passing game and nothing more would have us at 3-1 right now. Maybe better.

Agree 100%. IF stephens really isn't as good as the cromptonator, then we throw bray in the mix right out the shoot. usc did it and so did michigan, our situation will be no different next year. just glad that bray will get here early and learn the playbook and get in that S&C program.

It is painfully obvious that we are not playing Stephens for one of two possible reasons:

1. He is much worse than Crompton. If he were even almost as good it would make sense for him to at least have a shot at playing. Kiffin and our staff are not ignorant. They know Crompton is bad. They are game planning around Crompton. (1st half of Ohio was giving him a shot to get his confidence up, and he promptly blew it.)

2. Bray starts from the first snap of spring practice next year. If Stephens plays and is average/better than Crompton/decent enough to manage the game then we potentially risk losing Bray as a commitment. I would bet that Bray has been told if he shows up in the spring and plays as good as he is capable of he will start immediately. If Stephens shows that he can play well enough then Bray has to sit for a year or wait for an injury... you risk him going somewhere else that he can start immediately.

I think these are the only two logical reasons for us continuing to play Crompton. Four games is enough evidence for the staff to see that regardless of how he plays in practice that it does not compute come game time.

I wasnt about to read through all of these pages but i found some stats that are interesting to me.

Last year with one of the worst offenses in Tennessee history Nick Stephens against Georgia & Alabama combined went 29-58, 345yds 4tds 0ints. The completion percentage doesnt look good but he had ZERO ints against Bama or Georgia. Thats taking care of the football & managing the game exactly what we needed against UCLA & Florida.

We really do need to take care of the football. I'm really getting tired of seeing Crompton drop back to pass.

Our Oline, Hardesty, and Brown are doing an awesome job to be able to run the ball when everyone knows we can't throw it.

The swing pass seems to work. Widening the field is our best option with Crompton, but I don't see the field ever lengthening with his current level of play. I don't like the short or across the middle passes for Crompton at all. If he sticks to swing passes and deep passes (substitute his interceptions for the punt) that lessens the damage.

I can't believe his missed Teague on the deep ball. That was frustrating.

I agree with others that Kiffin was just giving Crompton some practice throws against Ohio. Too bad he missed so many of them. I can't believe he missed Teague on the deep ball. That was frustrating.

Point is simple people. You never now what a kid will do if you don't give him a chance. We know what Crompton is doing because he has had a chance to play and not done all that well either. Now, Stephens should get a chance, we could guess what he will do but don't really know till he gets in there. He has had another year of practice and maturing. And he has a new QB friendly ur offense. He may just come in and do a great job running this offense. He should at least let him have a shot, he deserves it just as much as Crompton does, thats for sure. Can't count how many times I have heard of the back up QB coming in and doing very well and sometimes better than the starter.

Why is everyone over reacting? Crompton did have a terrible game. He play well tonight.

He played well tonight??? Are you serious? What exactly do you consider playing well? Remember that this isn't a high school team.

This guy is unbelievably bad. He's so bad that I honestly cannot believe that the other guys on the team would hurt the team this badly.
I've heard from other players that he has NO real support in the locker room. Apparently he likes to try and pump the players up before games and a halftime, but they all just look at each other and roll their eyes. I've heard that he's clueless, and doesn't get it that he is the reason why our team can't be good this year.

There is a time and a place for starting a senior QB so that you can recruit who you want for the next season.

However, there's a point where it makes your judgement as a coach look poor. It also begs how another 5-7 season would affect recruiting.

A lot more than showing young QBs that the QB position is open immediately.

There is simply NO WAY that Nick Stephens could be WORSE. He may not be better, but there is no fundamental way he's worse.

Can I be the first to say...........you don't know what you are talking about? Neither Tyler nor his football crazy parents (who are moving to Knoxville to be near their baby boy by the way) expect him to start next season. His body is woefully unprepared to last even half a season as an SEC starter at this point. He would have to put on a miraculous amount of weight and muscle on in the next 10 months to even be considered to start as a freshman. I'm not saying he won't get plenty of opportunities, but with only one returning starter on the offensive line next year I seriously doubt Kiffin will throw him to the wolves at the start of next season. I really believe he has the chance to be a great UT QB but there is no way he would switch commitments because he thought he might have to wait a season to start. He is an 18 year old, 195 lb, 6'6" kid. How many SEC schools do you know that would start a kid at QB who runs a 5.5, 40 who is that skinny? He would get killed back there. I'm not saying he won't start at some point during the season or if there is an injury, but the chance of him starting at the beginning of next season is very small. Now if he comes in and gets his weight up to 215-220 and his athleticism is proven then maybe, but other than that.....no way!

I feel bad knocking a fellow human being so badly but he isn't. A real fan would request to sit on the bench or leave the team. He isn't doing any good for the team. This really does sound horrible but it's true. He is being selfish by putting himself on the field.

Watching him play makes me want to vomit. I've given him the benefit of the doubt over and over again but this is too much. He is single handedly keeping Ohio in the game.
Any kid on any football team with an ounce of competiveness in their body wouldn't bench themselves...I know I wouldn't, that's taking a cop out if you ask me

LOL

So then this is the logic: Stephens is worse than Crompton. Crompton is absolutely terrible. Our 4 star QB recruit (#6 in the nation) isn't good enough to play on a team with a coach that has declared freshmen will play if they are good enough.

So Stephens is absolutely terrible, and Crompton isn't going to win us any games. We will have Stephens next year -- who is worse than Crompton -- and suffer through another terrible year of QB play.

If this is the case would it not make sense to put in Stephens at some point against a lesser opponent (Ohio) to develop his skills? Crompton is a loss and we all know it -- why not develop the guy that we will supposedly be stuck with next year?

Some Rivals notes on Bray:
On the Hoof: Perhaps the tallest committed D-I quarterback prospect in the country but very lean at this time. The closest physical comparison would be N.C. State quarterback Mike Glennon.
Needs Improvement: Will need to add some muscle mass and strength while improving his overall foot speed.
Most Impressive: Bray is a very accurate quarterback that has excellent touch and can throw any type pass asked of him. He is also an intelligent player that will make the right reads and not throw into double coverage.
Conclusion: This quarterback may have the most long-term potential of any quarterback in the country. Bray is a tough competitor that sees the whole field and already has enough arm strength to make the tough throws.

Bray sounds exactly like what we need. I am confident our strength and conditioning coaches can help him bulk up 20-30 lbs.

I feel bad for knocking a fellow poster being so bad but he is. A real poster would request a ban or leave the forum. He isn't doing any good for the team. This really does sound horrible but it's true. He is being selfish by putting himself on the first page of the football forum.

Reading his posts makes me want to vomit. I've given him the benefit of the doubt over and over again, but this is too much. He is single-handedly lowering the IQ of every poster in this forum.

If I were a rival recruiter, I would archive this thread and give any UT QB recruit Josh Nunes phone number at Stanford.

Go ahead and respect him for not quitting. I won't stop you nor do I care. He is going to sink the team this season and maybe the incoming class with it. His deciding factor in the win column may be the difference of 4 games. This team has the talent to win 9 games. Because of him, they may win 4 or 5. He is that bad.

No it doesn't. Vince Lombardi couldn't get 9 wins out of this year's team. Put down the Kool-Aid for a second.

And which players in our recruiting class decommitted after tonight? Oh, that's right, NONE. In fact, we picked up three 4* recruits after the loss to UCLA! I'm glad our recruits aren't as short-sighted as many posters on this board.

I seriously doubt recruits give a damn what we think. Well, at least not the recruits we actually want.

In all seriousness, he shouldn't quit. He is doing what his coach and team are asking him to do. Is he doing it well, no. But don't quit.

Did you describe a quitter? I would rather see a player struggle than to walk off the field. If UT had a fan base as big a quitter as you, the stands would have been empty. Take your football and go home.

right.. everybody's forgetting the serious recruiting hardware that this staff has brought in... kiffin has done everything that we could have hoped for..

fans may not like the position we're in, but if they are, they should take it up with another man who refused to quit..
