The eternal QB debate (merged)

Well, first of all the interception cannot be blamed on Crompton. It was right in the receivers hands and he did not come up with the catch. The ball deflected off of our receiver's hands and the defender caught it. Not much you can do about that.

However the near interception by the MLB was definitely Crompton's fault, along with him overthrowing Teague which was a sure TD. Plus the fumble was incredibly stupid.

Overall though, I think Crompton actually DID show a slight improvement over the previous 2 games. I think if Crompton can show incremental improvement from week to week, we have to stick with him like it our not.

I feel sorry for Nick, but Kiff is more stupidly hard headed about this than Coach Fulmer was. All the great recruiting in the world will not do when you don't let your backup even have a shot. Kiff is the guy that says the playing field is level for competition, but he will not give the backup a try when the starter predictably chokes.

There is something wrong with Crompton's depth perception. Every throw is high, hot and late. I can't imagine how demoralizing his mistakes are since the whole team must expect them, especially when the pressure mounts.

Poor kid but, WAKE UP KIFFEN!!!

Dude, we have seen Stephens play, he is NOT any better. We did the QB rotation last year with no success, why do you think its going to suddenly work this year? Kiffin said he is sticking with one guy, and he is.

If JC is AVERAGING 1.5 turnovers per game- is NS really such a bad alternative??? Nick might not make all the plays, but at least he is not turning it over as often as JC. With each offensive possession so precious for our chances to win, why isn't the turnover aspect pushing for NS to take over?

I do like that JC is hanging in there, but he never seems to accept personal responsibility when he screws up. All the best QB's seem to say "my bad" but I don't see that in JC.

CLK is NOT going to change qbs, and I trust that he knows way better than any of us that it would not be any better putting NS in. Like I have heard many times, and I agree with, if you put NS in the game, you can't go back to JC, and you are stuck with NS the rest of the season regardless of how bad he may be. At that point you may as well give JC a clip board and headset because he will be on the sidelines for the rest of the year, and then we have NO qb at all. Remember, CLK was a qb in college so he knows more than probably most on this messageboard about the psychological part of being a qb, or whatever. We just all need to support jc, and trust our head coach is doing the right thing. After all, he wasn't left with much to work with.

People have short memories. Does anyone remember Ainge in 2005 after his confidence was shot because of rotating qb's? Now... I believed then as I believe now that Ricky should've been starting that year because the players responded to him and Ainge had some growing up to do. However, it completely tore a team that was pre-season Top 5 to pieces and Ainge was completely shattered.

Of course... had there been no 2005, then last year would've been Fulmer's first losing season and he'd likely still be the coach this year.

3 things I want to add to this discussion.

:good!:

1) Crompton is awful. I concur. But he will continue to progress during the course of this season as a result of keeping him in. This is what our coach last year failed to understand. Yanking a guy out and putting another in doesn't help either guy. There is absolutely no way to simulate a game in practice. Your biggest progressions as a QB will come on the field. He has to make the mistakes to learn from them. Will he ever be an excellent starting QB? No. But he will be good enough to win us the games we are supposed to win. That's all you can ask for this season anyway.

This. Crompton is terrible. He is the worst TN QB I have seen in my lifetime and that is no exaggeration. He is single-handedly handcuffing this offense, and it is at times painful to watch. However, Saturday was the best game he has played this year (Western Kentucky Secondary School aside). His first pick was a tipped ball (I'm pretty sure tipped by our guy) and there were three balls that I counted that hit our receivers in the hands that were dropped.

After the Florida game, would I have liked to seen Stephens get some snaps against Ohio? Yes. Do I think we would be losing much by trying it? No, but I also agree that CLK obviously doesn't see much in Stephens or he would have given it a shot and that the only way Crompton is going to get better is to continue to get game experience.

Our coach has made a decision, and I am going to be behind it whether I like it or not. The fact is the cupboard was left bare by Fulmer and it is going to take a little time and patience from our fan base to get us back where we need to be. Rome wasn't built in a day. Any person that is against Lane Kiffin and what he is doing with this program is seriously delusional. Just take a deep breath and enjoy the ride. Saturday is a big game for us.

Go Vols!

I don't know what most of you want from Crompton but I think he done pretty good Saturday. He only through 1 interception. We had a lot of dropped passes from receivers. I agree that he isn't the greatest QB but have studied Crompton throwing the past four games and two things that I see are wrong with his mechanics that make him terrible. The first is that he is starring down receivers which should not be done. The second is that he is not throwing off his toes. He is throwing flat footed which is what causes you to over or under throw your receivers just about every time. I don't blame this problem on Kiffin I blame this on the QB coach because that is who teaches the QB how to throw. If Crompton could ever do this he will be good enough to win out the rest of the year. If everyone remembers a couple of years ago when he came in for Ainge he done very well and was very accurate. With his mechanics being off and receivers dropping the ball a lot we will never have a pass game.

this is seriously the worst thread ive seen on this site BY FAR. saying kiffin needs to grow a pair and calling for his head... this is no vol fan i know. he is dealing with what fulmer left him... nothing. NS is no better a choice than crompton and if you think he and the receivers are on the wrong page then just wait til a new qb comes in with little reps in practice with said receivers and see how much worse this offense gets. NS can only throw a good deep ball and he's not even consistent with that or we would have won more than 5 games last year when he took over. furthermore, the wildcat formation is a gimmick that works maybe twice a game unless its a major part of the offense... so guru do us a favor and keep your opinions to yourself.

Who is this Kiffen you speak of?

Get over it. Asking a kid to resign ,do the honorable thing , or commit ritual suicide is just wrong. He is a young man with the weight of the world on his back and a bunch of armchair qbs are piling on. Trust CLK bottom line.

I agree. The title of this thread is just the opposite of what I think. JC is doing the best he can do, and, personally, I admire him for toughing it out for these past couple of years with the death threats, etc. that he supposedly recieved last year. There is no way that anybody is going to go to the coach and ask to be removed unless they are sick or something.

what i see count is recruiting getting us a 10 win season and our staff bolting for bigger paychecks.this is what all these guys are after, bigger check elsewhere.

lets hope im wrong.

Like the head coach at Duke?

me and sum friends were watching the game sat, and we asked if 20 is the line, will crompton throw more or less INT's. i said he wld go over 20 if he plays all year

I have no hangover, OHIO blows, they should have never scored more than 10 points last night, but yet, playing an inferior team Crapton is still throwing picks because he can't get his head out of ass and stop throwing into damn thick coverage

I didn't realize that JC played defense.

The day the coach listens to VN or fans for player selection is the day we need a new coach
+10^100

I hearken back to what DiNardo said when LSU was adding the last upper deck: "I'm all for more fans at the games, but the last thing any coach needs is 15,000 more offensive coordinators."

If NS was even a tad bit better than JC he would be starting. Think about it, with even decent QB play we win both the UCLA and UF games, CLK would be 4-0 and would be a god on the hill.

No way CLK would pass on being 4-0 right now with a win over UF for some future QB recruit.

I'mmore worried about our D at this point. If we suffer many more injuries, we are done.

Done? Done with what? We aren't supposed to do anything this year anyway. If you thought we were going to squeak out more than 6 wins this year made a mistake. We won't be "back" for another 2 years, but when we do arrive, its going to be allsome (I think that's how our gator counterparts spell it). :)
