The eternal QB debate (merged)

I'm not calling for Kiffins head, I think he is a great coach, but at some point you have to realize that Crompton is not gonna get the job done. He is a 3rd string QB starting for one of the most highly regarded programs in the country, or at least it used to be. I just think it is time to give someone else a chance!

3 things I want to add to this discussion.

1) Crompton is awful. I concur. But he will continue to progress during the course of this season as a result of keeping him in. This is what our coach last year failed to understand. Yanking a guy out and putting another in doesn't help either guy. There is absolutely no way to simulate a game in practice. Your biggest progressions as a QB will come on the field. He has to make the mistakes to learn from them. Will he ever be an excellent starting QB? No. But he will be good enough to win us the games we are supposed to win. That's all you can ask for this season anyway.

2) The same people clamoring for Nick Stephens to start are the same idiots that were calling for Crompton whenever Ainge threw a bad pass. Continue to post this nonsense if it makes you feel better, but don't expect your rant to change the fact that Crompton is the guy and will be the guy barring injury.

3) Nick Stephens may not be the future of this football team. Kiffin could have a plan in place for next year that will see Nick Stephens continue to stand on the sidelines. This is a guy that can't beat out the worst QB that's ever started for Tennessee, guys. It's not like he's an All-SEC player that the coaches are too boneheaded to play.

Sab, how dare you try to use logic in this thread! :) :hi:

Good post. Though I do believe Stephens should get a chance, Crompton is the QB. We are still Tennessee and we should support the team we are given. Mistakes are made in coaching, but again we are still Tennessee. Dont half to like just half to deal with it. Go Vols beat Aub

If Tennessee loses to Auburn and Crompton throws two interceptions or more, I think we see Stephens starting against Georgia. Jmo. I don't see Kiffin pulling Crompton in the middle of a game unless he throws 3 interceptions in the first half or something.

Following are passing stats for some of this past week's games...

Based on this data, I don't understand all of the negative Crompton comments. Look at the stats of GA, KY, AR, MS St, Vandy, MS, Miami, VT, Penn St, IA... they're all worse! And most of the other teams aren't much better. I checked a few competitor sites (whose QB stats were worse) and they don't seem to be bashing their QB. Granted, Crompton had a very bad game against UCLA, but he had a good game against WKY and reasonable games against FL and OH. So again... why all the negative posts? I am sure there are those who will want to bring up last year. Well, that was last year... get over it... different coaches, different blocking schemes, different offensive system. Maybe our coaches ARE making progress? Why not at least give them AND Crompton a chance during his senior season? Many posters have stated that his biggest problem is a confidence issue. If you were a QB being booed by your fans, and possibly read all of these negative posts about you, wouldn't that impact your own confidence? Think about it... be honest... and you'll agree. It honestly seems like the "popular" thing to do is to bash Crompton, whether he deserves it or not. Members read the posts of others and just jump on board... what a bunch of conformists. The way I see it... those who continue to sling the insults, which contributes to his lack of confidence, are contributing to the problem.

So, my challenge to VolNation is to stop the bashing until the stats actually show a poor performance... and if they do, you won't here a peep from me. But how about encouraging the guy for the AU and GA games and see what happens?

I stopped reading after "I don't understand all of the negative Crompton comments."

Look at the body of work. If he hasn't put it together by the fourth game of his senior season, as a fifth year senior he never will.

So for the three poster with the negative comments, where is your data supporting your opinion? You don't have any... you just like throwing out insults. I admitted the bad game against UCLA, but that doesn't excuse all the negative comments after this week's game.

Do all of these other teams have 8 INTs in 4 games like our QB? :whistling:

If you are optimistic about these stats, you clearly havent been watching our team for the last 1.4 years

OP, What were his stats against UCLA again?

Decided not to read the whole post, huh? The OP mentioned he had a bad game against UCLA. He was talking exclusively about the Ohio game. But no you're right, lets continue bashing this 22 year old who is (despite some morons on here) going to be our QB for the rest of the year... :good!:

can we post the stats of UT vs. the rest of the SEC at the end of the season first? Then we'll talk. Yeah he didn't do awful against WKU or Ohio......

The OP never said he was optimistic, just that it didn't make a lot of sense to be completely bashing Crompton after the Ohio game...

Granted some of the fault belongs to the receivers but Crompton is a poor game manager and makes some horrible decisions. This alone is reason enough to be critical of Crompton.

I don't even know what you mean by poor game manager. Yes he makes bad decisions on the field, just like many of our players make bad decision on the field and off the field (something crompton doesn't do) but I don't see you pulling out your pitchfork for those guys....
