The general USC debate thread (merged)

Or that any of USC's opponents will be as good offensively as that Florida team Monte's defense held to 23 points...

Florida's offense sucked last year. LSU held them to 13 points, Bama nearly shut them out. Also, see Oregon and how good their offense is.

Don't confuse spread with spread option. Oregon runs (ran) a spread option. Who knows what they'll do now that Masoli is out.

Stanford, under David Shaw, runs a West Coast/Pro-Style. Basically... they run what they can based on what they have. Now that it's just Luck and they don't have Gerhardt anymore... I'd expect more WC looks as Luck will probably have to carry that offense.

I didn't get anything confused. Like you said they run a West Coast/Pro-style offense, but that isn't the spread.

But the current squad will be without TE Dickson and QB Masoli... both of which were major components in that offense. Still have James the RB though.

Our starters last year weren't bad at all. Actually judging by the NFL scouts, they were very good. Florida absolutely dominated us last year. I know everyone will say 23-13, but face the facts, Florida punted once. If Tebow doesn't fumble going in in the 4th quarter we are down 30-6 again for the second year in a row. And that was with a very average Florida offense. Besides, we won't have to worry about USC's talent level after the NCAA lowers the boom on them.

1. I doubt they "lower the boom" 2. USC has better talent. It's also going to be hard for Oregon to put up ridiculous numbers on them without Masoli.

Over the past few years, they have just plugged in players to run that offense and not missed a beat. They are all products of the system.

It took Dennis Dixon almost 3 years to get it right. Then after he left they had to try multiple qbs until Masoli stepped up.

Masoli was the major player in the Spread-Option that Kelly favors. We'll see how well Costa does (assuming here) filling in for Masoli.

agreed. dixon was garbage his junior year. masoli was no great shakes his sophmore year either. and oregon had a MUCH more favorable schedule last year and they have sucked on the road recently. Their record at Cal and at USC is garbage over the past 6 years. something like 5 blowout losses and one close loss. they also have to play at oregons state.

Actually, Masoli replaced their QB this year, who was on the short list of Heisman front runners the year before when he got hurt.

Masoli was the starter in 08 and 09. Brady Leaf (I think) replaced Dixon when he got hurt.

This is what I think too. I didn't know if the starter had been named yet though.

looks like it is neck and neck. personally i think oregon's surge had far more to do with the pac-10 not being that great and an extremely favorable schedule (similar to their run in 05, another odd year) than it did with oregon being that great of a team. ohio state killing them, a not that great team either, reinforced this belief. this year should be interesting though.

A good team that had a qb finally show something in the passing game though and that was a relief. I think Oregon was a good team, but I do agree that the pac 10 was kind of down.

I still think that the Rose Bowl was more Oregon making Pryor look like the QB he was supposed to be, rather than a coming out party for him. I'm expecting him to have another middling season.

and why did they finally show something int he passing game? could it be because oregon's pass d ranked in the 100s? personally i didn't think pryor looked that great. his receivers were wide open.

Fair points, but if it was the case of Oregon's d being that bad then at least he has the confidence and momentum going. I think he will have a breakout year this year. Although if having another middling season means another BCS bowl then I will take it.

Agreed. People here think he's going to be Vince Young now, which is silly. He can be okay, but Tressel won't give him too much freedom.

I think the Vince Young stuff is just because people see the potential. I think this is going to be a good season for him if Tressel lets him go.

the only decent qb that oregon shut down in the pac-10 is locker and personally i think locker is pretty overrated. luck (51 points), fowles(41 points), and canfield (33 points) all lit them up. OSU's D was really the story here.

I don't see tOSU getting back to the Rose Bowl if one or two of the teams they face this season can take advantage of the fact that Pryor isn't smart enough to run anything more than a basic offense.
