The general USC debate thread (merged)

'03 was the biggest example of why the BCS is a total failure (though examples happen nearly every year).

Um... no.

2000 was way worse. Nobody thinks about that one though because Miami didn't have any CFB figureheads championing their cause in front of a television camera all during the months of December and January like USC did in '03.

Washington beat Miami that year so why shouldn't they get a shot?

the only decent qb that oregon shut down in the pac-10 is locker and personally i think locker is pretty overrated. luck (51 points), fowles(41 points), and canfield (33 points) all lit them up. OSU's D was really the story here.

OSU d was the story especially the line. I just think Pryor had a good game for one reason or another and will build on that.

Because they played only 2 ranked teams all year, going 1-1 in those games. Hence my BCS travesty argument.

Florida State had a 3 1/10s of a point margin lead over Miami who beat them straight up during the season and were ranked in front of them in both major polls. Because FSU ran the score up on teams in the weak ACC, 4/5 computer polls gave them the nod over Oklahoma and Miami , thus leap frogging them into the BCS title game in a 1vs3 battle.

So the reports are not coming out this week now??? Something about them being to "lengthy." I can feel a slap on the wrist coming.....

I think the Vince Young stuff is just because people see the potential. I think this is going to be a good season for him if Tressel lets him go.
I'm sure Tressel is trying to find a way to let him have more freedom, so he can better showcase his athletic abilities. However, he's not a winner like Vince (no one really is in the college game). The schedule is, once again, awful, so Pryor just needs to avoid disastrous performances, and OSU could run the table if they beat Miami.

2002 game. 2001 season

Not that it really matters, but I'd say we're talking about the 2001 title game, even if it was played in 2002.

Either way, this works out better for them. They can get to number 2 and complain. Beats getting murdered.

I just read back through some of this thread.....

There are people who think the 03 LSU team could have beaten USC? I've yet to meet an LSU fan who thinks that.

You will be witch hunted after the hammer falls on your newly favorite college football team.

The report on Yahoo suggested that the NCAA could use this as an opportunity to send a message.

I keep worrying that this will somehow come back to TN now that Kifforgeron is no longer around to grease all the necessary palms.

Stupid post. You will never catch me rooting for USC. I am just being realistic. If you think the hammer is coming down on USC then you are setting yourself up for a big disapointment.

Agreed. As much as I want to see Kiffin go down, I can't help but feel that the NCAA shouldn't have too much power.

I have had the feeling they would get the slap on the wrist all along. I was just hopeing for more. Some people think that because the NCAA spent 4 years and over 4 million dollars they are going to make an example out of USC. But, I think that, that is there example they showed schools they would spend the money and investigate (scare tatic). However they did not get enough evidence on USC to do much with.

TV ban
Likelihood: 5%

ABC/ESPN and Fox Sports sent a clear message when it announced its early selections for what games it will broadcast in the 2010 season: USC moves the ratings needle. With the Trojans set for 10 nationally or regionally televised games, it would be too punitive to the Pac-10 or its media partners to take away its biggest draw.

Bowl ban
Likelihood: 20%

With 70 teams set to participate in postseason play this year, the NCAA is going to need everyone with a winning or .500 record to fill those spots, lest those with 5-7 records or two wins against FCS schools be brought in to eliminate what little credibility middle and bottom-tier bowls already have.

Only if the NCAA finds McNair knew about the extra benefits does a postseason ban seem likely.

Scholarship reductions
Likelihood: 75%

Now here is where the NCAA has been most willing to penalize violators, by taking away the most critical commodity in college sports.

Alabama was hit with a loss of 21 scholarships over a three-year span. USC could see a similar result, being limited to say signing 21 players for four years.

The biggest hit could come with walk-ons, eliminating the opportunity to reward them with scholarships later in their career.

Vacating wins
Likelihood: 85%

With Bush likely to be found ineligible, the 2005 season or even earlier is likely to be erased from the record books. Alabama and Florida State lost several seasons for textbook and academic fraud incidents.

The biggest question would be Bush’s Heisman Trophy and would the trust that presents the award actually revoke it?

Probation
Likelihood: 98%

The NCAA’s way of saying, “don’t do it again,” this will be the most effective inducement to make sure new coach Lane Kiffin and his staff walks the straight and narrow.
