The Golf Thread

i'm going to be in Hilton Head next week for a wedding.

recommend a course (on or off the island) we can play at in the 50-100 dollar range. i never payed attention to the previous talk on this subject.
I always enjoy Hilton Head National (off island, right across the bridge). It's always in pretty good condition and it's a fun golf course.

The Arthur Hills course at Palmetto Dunes is a good suggestion also.

Harbor Town just has too many ups and downs. Near tourney times, it's all world, but it's just OK for the remainder of the year, and I love that track. One of my favorites in the world 'cause it plays to my strengths.
That used to be very true, but the past several years Harbor Town has not been nearly as up and down as it used to be. I love that course just for the Par 3's.

Really? New mgmt?

I'm not sure what it is. It's still managed by Sea Pines. I had always heard exactly what you said about the course conditions, then I had a Pro over at Sea Pines tell me that it wasn't true anymore. Since then I've played it during the Summer and once last year in October, and he was right.

Have you by chance played Heron Point? It used to be the Sea Pines Sea Marsh course, but Pete Dye came in and tricked it up and changed the name. That place plays more difficult for me than Harbor Town does. The greens are flat out evil.

Havent played it, but am not a fan of Pete Dye after a couple of days at Kiawah. I remember the course, but don't think it was changed last I was there. Been several years becaue I've gone to Wisconsin and Oregon for my last several trips. I think I'm addicted.

Do I need to give it a swing next time I'm there?

It's probably worth playing.

I know what you mean about Pete Dye. Even at Harbor Town, you've got this natural design and then you get to that Par 4 on the back 9 (14?) that has those goofy cross ties around the green.

Great track, save that should be abortion.

Kiawah and Sawgrass are simply ridiculous.

Well, I've got a big event (for me) coming up soon, and since my game has been kind of off since about July, I've been prepping mainly by ignoring it. I'll post details after it has occurred, but if you see a 6'4" guy with a Nike bag and knitted blue and black headcovers on a Middle Tennessee golf course early Monday, don't stand to my left.

What is everyone on here's home course? Mine used to be Rolling Hills CC, but it went downhill so I play dyersburg municipal when I'm home now.

I got a bit lucky and squeezed in 18 yesteday afternoon between raindrops. I carded a ho-hum 89, with only two blow up holes, both of which started wrong off the tee and ended up with triples. If it isn't any worse than that Monday, I'll consider it a success.

I play at the beautiful and historic Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club, where there are no tee times, cart path rules, or sand in the bunkers. All in all, it really is a pretty good little course.

Stonebridge Meadows, Fayetteville, AR

I'm still in negotiations with the wife, on joining

Hawthorn Woods Country Club

so for the time being I've been playing
Stonewall Orchard and Countryside in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago

I bet Chicago has some pretty pristine courses!

Yes.

Awesome, I used to have a teacher in high school that was from Hopkinsville...I believe. Either Hopkinsville or Madisonville.

I've been on Cog Hill, Kemper Lakes, and Medina, which range from "Top Notch" to "Unbelievable." There isn't really a shortage of good places to play.

I can't wait to visit it then. I'm no professional, but I sure love this game even though I have thrown clubs and said more obscenities playing golf than any other sport :whistling:

ended up plating Hilton Head National this week. i shot 46-41 to win the wedding tourney. i thought it was goin to be a long day after starting +5 but i settled down and really enjoyed the course.

Not bad at all, especially considering the start! Play much?

Glen Club and Harborside Int. are somewhere on my Want to Play list, but I haven't made them yet.

Chicago is one of my favorite cities, but I haven't been able to get up there much lately.

I've only heard good things about Chicago(minus the traffic) so I can only imagine how great it is! My mom got to go this past Thanksgiving and she said it was pretty amazing. Heck i'm right on the Kentucky border, Cotton, I might try to ride up sometime and play at Hopkinsville! Is it private?

Yeah, but we're not that particular about it.

Home Course: Ponte Vedra Golf and CC at Sawgrass and South Hampton in st. augustine

Have you played the Plantation on Amelia Island? I was there in June and played the Ritz course, but I think I missed the gem at Plantation.

Heck i'm right on the Kentucky border...

Where are you in Illinois? I had a friend who played juco ball at Harrisburg and I went up there a couple of times in college.
