The Golf Thread

I am just sniffing down the ticket trail. Let me know if you come up with anything. I have some connection to Brown Foreman, right now that is looking like my best shot.

I will--my best bet is probably some insurance connections. Bankers and insurance guys seem to always come up with the perks:thumbsup:

You better believe it. We are the experts at locating golf courses and cheap green fees.

I was thinking more of expense accounts, entertainment budgets, and useful connections, but I guess it all goes together!

That is pretty good considering that it is about 63% higher than the swing speed of the longest hitting pros.

I've seen WGC in action. It's his mouth that moves at 180 mph. It was an honest mistake.

It is hard to read humor through exaggeration on a webboard and always appreciate it for what it is, especially from the guy who is 334 off the tee.

My bad.

I know if I hit the ball over 310 that three elements are in play:

1. It is a hot dry day.
2. The wind is at my back.
3. When I get to my ball I will be looking back at a very steep hill.

I hit one 410 a couple of months ago when we had drought conditions down here. It was downwind, hard as a rock and it caught 2 massive downslopes. The drop from the tee to the bottom of the second downslope was probably 75 feet. It was sort of like hitting a ball downhill on an airport runway.

Nothing like hitting 9 iron into a 550 yard par 5.

Hardpan, cartpath, tennis courts. It is a recipe for a long drive, and also a good bet that my ball is lying in the middle of Country Club Ln.

After further review, I wouldn't call that hole a dog leg since you can see the flag from the tee. The ball did catch a downhill roll, but nonetheless, it was a surface to air missile that I was proud of. If you go back and read the original post, I was making fun of myself since I couldn't do anything with it.

I thought this was the place to come and talk golf. I don't think my original post could possibly be read as bragging.

we probably took it poorly because of your SC rooting interest. Keep talking golf, we're good with it.

My advice, hit about 10 times as many wedges on the range as you do woods

I really wasn't trying to beat you up, just point out why I might have mistaken the swing speed for internet bravado and maybe giving a gamecock a bit of a hard time.

As for golf, I've got my appointment with the swing doctor tomorrow. I went to the range yesterday, and things went very, very wrong.

My main reason for even participating on this board is to mess with GAVol. I've come to enjoy the board almost as much as the Gamecock board I use.

My frustration with golf comes from the fact that I shot in the mid 70's while on the high school golf team, only to rarely break 85 nowadays. I don't have the time it takes to invest in getting my game back to that level, so pardon me if I get excited when a flash of brilliance comes off of my club head. (That was the best drive I've hit in 10 years).

You're right, Papa. The short game is where it's at. That's advice you can take to the bank.

I thought you guys were Vitamin B deficient or something. I often forget I'm a Gamecock swimming in Vols water. Remember, you've never seen me go delusional about the Cocks.

Let's keep the golf talk going. This is a great thread, and I don't want to mess it up.

I'm thinking of coming up, but I don't have a real plan yet. Funny thing is, the girlfriend volunteered the last time the PGA was at Valhalla as part of the Pepsi Jr. Golf deal (she held Frank Nobilo's sign.) She obviously got on some list, and she was asked to volunteer again--at the low, low price of $250. I've never heard of someone having to pay to volunteer before, but I think if we can get it worked out, we will be paying spectators, not paying volunteers.

Wow 250 to volunteer...

There's an LPGA event here in Northwest Arkansas around Labor Day, and I played the course last week, and it was $75.00 to volunteer, and that didn't include a comp'd round of golf, basically a box lunch and a shirt.

At the Champions event at Sandestin, it was still $75.00to volunteer but you received a free round of golf.

My frustration stems from exactly the opposite direction. In highschool, I was involved in what I considered more athletic pursuits (at least for the time and location.) I played once a year until I was about 25, when I tried to pick up the game while in the law clerking neverlands of Kentucky. I soon discovered that, no matter how athletic or competitive I considered myself to be, I was subject to getting humiliated by a 5'6' 115 lb girl in this particular athletic, competive endeavor. I'm still trying to catch up to the people that couldn't make the basketball, football, or baseball teams.

Got my checkup today. It seems a lot of my issues were stemming from...(drumroll)...ball position. I was having a tendency to let it creep back in my stance, and of course it magnified a couple of other bad habits I have developed.

It is amazing how simple and difficult the game can be at the same time.

Getting drunk and putting in flip flops will do it every time.

That's why I tend to NOT wear boxers on the links. Ball position is very important, and if they are not aligned properly and secured, the follow through can be most excruciating.
