The Golf Thread

I've seen the G5 send the ball on an ungodly and inhuman quest of distance. It was not in my hands mind you.

GAVOL - You would be able to relate this distance. It is a sight to behold watching this guy drive, and with consistency. At Cateechee, which you recently played, on hole 18 this person can drive the ball airborne, over/behind the oak tree down on the corner and be just off the fringe. Every time. He is crazy long, and crazy consistent with it. First name Chad. You'll find him at Hartwell Flooring Center next time through. It is a show. This is not a short par 4.

Speaking of drivers- what does everyone use? How do you like it?

I bought a custom SMT Nemesis 370cc with the Accuflex Assassin II shaft. This club/head combo won the 2002 Long distance championship. The head's main feature is a groove-less face that promotes front spin on the ball- thus longer rolls.

I definitely got what I paid for. This club is super long- the ball just doesn't seem to want to come down! Sounds like a shotgun when I really get ahold of it.

The main problem with this club is accuracy. It was designed for distance- and the groove-less face is sometimes very unforgiving to a poor swing. I constantly have to fight my natural slice with this club. Good shots always have a nice little fade to them- bad shots are squirrel killers :)

I play a 10.5 Cleveland Launcher with the factory stiff shaft in it. It is an improvement over my last club (GBBII,) but I'm not exactly in love with it. I've hit the new red Cobra, and I think it is slightly longer, more forgiving, and carries farther (it was actually 9 degrees, stiff.) The Cobra looked better at address, too, and I couldn't figure out how my 460cc driver was smaller than that 460cc driver. I'd like to try a few of this year's editions before tossing mine in the closet, though.

Callaway X460 9 deg., Aldila NV (green) stiff. I like that the clubhead squares itself at address with the four-point "X-series" design. Huge sweet spot. Hot, hot face. Very long. . . .and very loud.

I've got last years model Cleveland Hi-Bore, Accuflex Reg shaft, and I love it. It hits long and mis-hits still go a long way. I'm also happy with accuracy when i miss it's the swing not the club.

Hitting a Taylor Made 510 TP with X flex Fuji Speeder 757. Great club, but getting a little long in the tooth. Love the "relatively" heavy shaft. I test a lot of driver, and some are longer, but I have yet to find one I'm willing to put in play over this one.

Driver - Calloway Big Bertha 9 degree with extra stiff shaft.
3-wood - Calloway Steelhead plus
Utility - Ben Hogan 21 degree utility wood with stiff shaft
Irons - Ben Hogan Apex Edge Pro series with True-Temper stiff steel shafts 3 - PW
Wedges - Titelist Vokey 56 degree and 60 degree
Putter - Scotty Cameron Newport

i'm curious to know what irons everybody plays with as well.

Callaway X-16 Pro with steel Rifle shafts
Cleveland 588 SW bent to 53 degrees
Callaway V-forged Lob Wedge w/59 degree loft and 10 degree bounce

I play the Mizuno MX series (I forgot the number--they are 2 years old,) and I love them.

EDIT: They are steel shafted and fitted.

Just got off the golf course playing in an American Cancer Society Scramble qualifier. The heat index when I teed off was 110.

I have a set of Titlest DCI irons. Love them- excellent feel and control.

I've been eyeballing the new Ping irons though.

Irons:
Mizuno- MP 32 (love 'em)
Wedges- Cleveland -53 and 58 degree
Putter- Odessey two-ball

Driver I'm in the midst of change
I've been playing a Titelist 983K, reshafted with a Graphite Design ys6+ shaft, but I just picked up a Ping G5 from a co worker, and played it Saturday in a Boys and Girls Club scramble for the first time.

I played well with it, but I'm waiting to play it Saturday at my normal course, to really evaluate.

3-wood- Titlest 904f2 13 degree
Rescue- Sonartec 16 degree

Cleveland wedges rock- especially if you rust them out. I lost my 60 degree and miss it... :banghead2:

Cleveland wedges definitely rock. I also like my Callaway V-forged Lob wedge though. It's designed by Roger Cleveland and when you put it on the ground it looks just like a Cleveland wedge.

For whatever reason, I like the setup of the Vokey and Ping Tour wedges. Today I hit 54 and 60 deg Vokey 200 series wedges.

I think wedges are all about what looks good to you. Find something you are comfortable with then have one wedge that digs and another one with some bounce and you're set.

Sounds like you have been looking at my set! i play a 56 (with bounce) and a 60 (w/o) Vokeys, and I have a Mizuno 51 gap wedge--the PW in my iron set is really strong (48 or 49, I think.)

I have the Oil Can Cleveland's and I love the contrast at address.
