The Golf Thread

I have not been posting much in the golf thread in awhile, I have not been able to play in months due to back pain. I finally broke down and went for the MRI which gave me the news that I feared but expected, L5 disc is badly ruptured and L4 is slightly ruptured, also told I have degenerative disc disease. Started a series of spinal epiderals today for the pain, surgery coming soon. My neurosurgeon and doctor both advised me to give up the game entirely and I may do that but I am not going to make that decision just yet, gonna have to give it up for at least a year or 2 maybe more but maybe later on I can at least get out there and hack at it a little bit. I'll probably never be very competetive on the course again, but I'd at least like to be in on the friendships and cold beers that always seem at their best on the course. It's damn frustrating and depressing, been playing for over 30 years and now not only can I not play golf but my quality of life in general with this back pain just plain sucks.

Well enough whinning about it, I hope all you VN duffers out there keep hitting em long and straight and above all have fun no matter how you are hitting it. Drink a cold one for me.

wow, that sucks Joey....I hope it goes well.
Btw, The americans took 24.5 out of 25 points today at the presidents cup.

How can the US be so dominant in the President's Cup yet barely show up for the Ryder Cup? I just don't understand.

golf is a very fickle mistress. bottom line is that a large % of our players have come into this event playing at the top of their games, while the international squad has no wins over the past 3 months. Oh, and it helps that we're putting lights out.

that doesn't explain the fact that it happens time and time again.

if there were a simple explanation that some anonymous type on a message board could present, then we could probably fix the problem. IMO, the answer is that they've outputted us badly the past few times we've played them - every cup I've watched, live or otherwise, has come down to putting, and we've not measured up. The PGA tour places a huge demand on driving, so the short game wizards can't win enough to make the squad, so our putting tends to struggle when we have guys like Wetterich as a rep.

IMO, had the Euorpeans been here to play this weekend with so many of our better players on top of their games, they would have been run off the course.

i'm slightly confused. the US did win this weekend. Putting still doesn't add up that the US wins the President's Cup and doesn't win the Ryder. I do sometimes question our method of selecting players, but I'm not sure it's just putting. Putting problems would happen anywhere. Besides Lefty and Tiger are the best shortgame players out there right now if you ask me.

uhhh...the President's Cup excludes the Euros, who were busy playing for the Seve Trophy this weekend. I'm saying that we could have beaten the Euros as well this weekend.

I can assure you that our putting has killed us over the past few Ryder Cups. Slow the speed down quite a bit, a la every Euro locale at which a Ryder Cup is held, and our best players flat out struggle. On this side of the pond, we have flat been out putted.

ok, i see where you're coming from. The last sentence of your original explanation just confused me. Still not sure I can make the connection for the number of times it's happened and that's why i'm the most confused from your statements. We've been beat many times off the tee and on approach shots in the Ryder. Putting isn't the only problem

putting has been the real killer, but we do induce our own problems here by setting up US open style venues, where driving accuracy is at a premium. this doesn't jive well with our best players now being bombers that hit hunt and wedge. I would play at augusta at 8000 yds on the fastest greens imaginable, then dare them to beat us. they go to the goofy Belfry and Valderrama with slow ass greens. let's do the opposite to them.

I'll take my NOT playing this lovely weekend as a sign that my golfing lamp has burned out for the year.

I just ordered a new putter to make sure that I play. Fall is easily the best golf season of the year. Weather and green conditions can't be touched.

True, but the days get shorter so it is hard to get in a round after work, and there are other things to do on Saturdays, like mindlessly watch football for 11 hours.

Since I haven't played since returning from Kohler, I think it is safe to say I've retired for the year.

fractured some bone in my wrist last week, and the doctor told me specifically that I wouldn't be able to play golf for at least 6 months or so, if not longer :cray:

that sucks no doubt, but on the bright side at least you did it now and not the start of spring.

Sorry to hear that KC. here's to a speedy recovery and an even better golf swing next spring! :toast:

don't know what shafts you are using, if they are not stiff it might take a while for you to get back into the swing of things. I've had too much experience with this, good luck
