The Golf Thread

I like sharks tooth. I hit thru some fairways at camp creek and like to play new courses with my driver, which I cant do there. If I'm at a new course with some blind landing areas while also clubbing down, I'm psychologically beat already. I crushed my first drive at camp creek right over the 150 and took a double as we never found it. It happened at least 2 other times that round.

thanks for the feedback

I disagree about buying used. If you're shooting low to mid 80s, get properly fit clubs for you. Will make all the difference. Ping's fitting system is top notch, but a good pro can get the set up right for you in just a matter of time.

You talking bout a club fitter or a head pro at a course?

Anyone good & serious bout their game would be better off getting a true fit from a club fitter/ repair outfit. Course pros & big box stores don’t have the equipment or knowledge the fitter has to build what the player needs. They will run some numbers & recommend an off the rack set of clubs (some they sell) while a good fitter will run the numbers, hand you a print out & remind you that he can build a set for you according to the specs.
Today’s off the rack stuff is terrible for the better players. OEM’s build the clubs so fast that quality control is lost in the process. Lie, loft, length & swing weights are all over the page on today’s mass produced clubs.
For the recreational player, stock clubs will work fine. I would recommend having the specs checked though.

Most good ones today are equipped to do both.

Some are, but I'm generally leery of a club pro selling me anything. This will probably read wrong, but honestly, they do so many other things that a lot of them aren't even that great at golf; much less instruction/club fitting.

Club fitting where I play is ridiculous. One guy named Tim something supposedly did it for some pros. They have this nice facility and all that people come to, along with lessons from Virgil Herring, who is very good. He charges $200/hr and the guys who have been fitted have walked away spending @ $2500 for the entire process. Yet at a 7 handicap, me and the other guys low haven't done the fitting. Several 11-16 handicaps have, and besides an extra long drive here and there, it hasn't reduced their handicaps. Still have to chip and putt.

True. It's hit or miss and normally I can figure it out in a matter of seconds if I should listen to them or not. Anyone I have to pay for a fitting is just scamming me.

You disagree on buying used clubs & suggest the guy get fit from a good pro “that can get the set up right for you in just a matter of time”. Then turn around and agree with GA that pros “do so many other things that a lot of them aren't even that great at golf; much less instruction/club fitting”.

How confusing is that? Hopefully the guy has his own plan figured out for a different set of newer clubs

The two aren't mutually exclusive. Some guy running a muni might not be the best guy to go to, but a course with actual infrastructure in place so that the pro isn't running the front desk, serving as GM of the course, shelling hot dogs, etc can generally properly fit you rather easily.

And notice I said good pro. GA even said some, thus saying it's hit or miss. Not sure how you're confused.

I'm done with hybrids! For every good (decent) one I hit there's at least 5 30yd hooks. I do everything possible to keep it from going left but sometimes it seems to make it worse. I mean they're not low duck hooks, they're solid & high but just go left. I've been debating it but now I guess my mind is made up on getting a 5 wood.

I had the EXACT same problem. Finally found a TM RBZ Tour 2 hybrid that I like.

I played about 2-3 months with a hybrid, took it out of the bag and haven't put it back. I have a 3 and 5 wood in my bag that I use if need be.

It depends on how you use a hybrid. The hybrid was originally intended as a rescue club that could be used from crappy lies and still get good carry on the ball. It sounds like most of you who are carrying a 5 wood instead were hitting the hybrid from the fairway, when a normal 3 iron would get the job done. I need my hybrid for 200 yd shots from the rough/junk. A 5 wood doesn't help there.

Gettin harder to find a 3I in today's forgiveness sets. People go to the hybrid because they can't hit a 3I. Not all hybrid's are created equally. There are some now with an iron face & hybrid back. Hybrids can be very easily hit from a fairway

I agree, I was just making the point that a hybrid is much more versatile than a 5 wood. The 5 wood is basically limited to the fairway or first cut whereas the hybrid is not.

Hybrids are long iron replacements designed to be easier to hit not necessarily more versatile. A 5 wood is just as versatile as a 2 hybrid. Some hybrids & woods have certain characteristics to add versatility from the rough like rails & such.

TD if you're still looking for irons & set on titleist or mizuno I'll suggest the mizuno JPX EZ forged. I went in to get a grip for my new 5 wood & was tempted. Sweet clubs & have a sweet finish.

I'll look at those. It's been a crazy two weeks for me, trying to finally close on out first house. I will probably be looking at and trying some out at the end of the season, but I'll add those to the list.

What do you think of those greens at Camp Creek?
