The Golf Thread

I have a sad wedge story from the last year. I asked for a specific wedge for christmas....56* taylor made rac with 12* bounce. I loved it...played great. 5th round with it i'm putting before my round when I get to the 1st hole and need it to chip up....I realize that someone has apparently lightened my bag for me....broke my heart.

According to Dave Pelz we should all take the 5 iron out of our bag and add a 64 degree X-Wedge. I think I'd develop a headache looking at my bag if I carried 4 wedges.

I used to think that too, but I use all 4 wedges in every round I play on every course I've played, but love the 5, the 4 was my club to stay in the garage..

my fave is my 60 deg wedge. just had to replace it, in fact

I saw an interesting blurb in a magazine the other day that made total sense. When you find a wedge you like, buy two of them with identical specs and practice with one and play with the other to save the grooves.

Using one swing with 4 wedges to produce different shots is way too mechanical for me since I'm more of a feel player, but the logic behind it makes sense.

that's great advice. just ordered this one with a little stiffer shaft. If I like, I might very well do that. I also got more bounce because I use it so much from the sand. If I don't like, the old, flat groove job will immediately back in the bag.

Now, if I could get the snow outta here, I could figure it out.

I tried the 64 degree wedge. I kept it for several months, finally it pissed me off so bad I through it in the woods. A friend of mine went and got it and said he would hold it for me in case I ever wanted it back again. That's been about 2 years ago and he still has it. That was the hardest club I've ever tried to hit.

I carried one for about a month and just decided that I could open my low bounce 60 to do anything that I could with the 64. three quarter type swings with the 64 were nearly worthless, unless I played it way back and hooded it quite a bit. I get much more out of any of my other irons.

Yes the short game is really, or should be a lot of feel involved, but I had to have a gap wedge. When you hit PW 140yds, and SW 105yds, I needed a buffer between the 2 at the end of the day. The lob wedge is just for showing off...:)

i have the 52, 56 and 60 to compliment my PW. I love my 60. 56 and 60 are the 588 Cleveland DSGs and the 52 is the slightly older 588 Gun Metal.

actually got rid of the gap wedge and went to a 54 deg sand wedge. Use the 60 out of most bunkers so don't really notice much. Allowed me to put the hybrid 2 in and I hit in on most tight or short holes.

i can't hit my 48 soft no matter how hard I try. If i try to overswing the 56, I hit it straight up, maybe 30 yards. It will leave one heck of a mark in the ground though. a 54 is a thought, but as mentioned before I have no desire to play a 3 wood, so I'm happy with what I've got.

three-quarter PW from 110 is my favorite shot in golf.

i have no idea why I can't perform that shot, I just know I can't. I hit a beauty of a full 52 degree 110 yard shot though.
my stock 54 is about 110, but I love that lower, no hands PW. Lie/slope, often dictates what I'll hit from there, but I always enjoy the little PW more. Don't know why.

I know the debate about Hard 8 vs. soft 7. Over the past few years I've transitioned from the hard 8 to the soft 7 mindset. Used to decel a bit on the softer shots and hit pull hooks. Worked at controlling the club with my shoulders, eliminating the hands, and that has helped me keep turning through the shot. Sounds complicated, but has simplified all the knock down shots for me. I still get into some terrible habits, but when I start thinking about that back shoulder hitting the ball, amazingly, it keeps my arms in front of my chest.

Simple game, this golf.

oh yeah, real simple. I can hit soft 7s 140 and soft 8s 130. Even a soft 5 160 and keep it lower. I think I do decel too much with the PW, but it plagued me for two years and I just gave in and took the extra wedge.

I had the extra one. Used to carry PW, 52, 56 and 60. I still do at times depending on the courses, but My hybrid 2 is more important to my game generally than the extra wedge. If I ever want the extra wedge back, I would actually just lose the 4 iron. Balls have gotten so long, that there just arent many long iron shots and I can always cut a big, high 3 (easier said than done) and play it shorter. Soon as I say that, I'll start coming over the top of a bunch of 3s and hitting 'em about 235. Then I'm back where I started.

I struggle with the soft 5, 4, 3. I have no idea how far they're going to go. Always feel like I need to hit 'em pretty hard to get some lift on them. It's mental and that's clearly not a strength of mine.

back when i was playing 4-5 times a week during college, I could actually pull off the easy 4. I could get it anywhere from 185-210. Of course, back then, I was amazing with a 3 iron in my hand. I could hit it from just about anywhere. These days it's a crapshoot.

we're probably all very similar in that vein. Used to love my little Mizuno MP-9 2 iron. Today, I put that thing behind a ball and it absolutely scares me to death. I've even considered going to a perimeter weighted, maybe Tungsten weighted 3 iron.

Back in the day I played Hogan Apex PC's . . . the ultimate in butter knife technology. What did we ever do before game improvement irons?

I don't know, but I would be afraid of hitting that 2 iron on a 420 yard or more hole any more. I'd have a decent chance of having to hit it again, and from the deck. How scary is that?
