The Halfcourt Trap NCAA Tournament Thread

Both South Alabama and Butler have impressive resumes. If UT plays their game, they beat either. But play a little lethargically ....

I think that is what makes most Tennessee fans nervous. The sort of lapses and scoring droughts in a Tennessee game that we push aside and rationalize during the regular season become absolutely lethal in the post season.

Bad teams do not get into the tournament. Good teams can get blown out. Heck, several conference champions WILL be blown out in the first round.

Tennessee must play with a consistency not seen in recent memory (ever at Tennessee?) to hold serve and make the Elite 8, let alone make some real tournament noise.

Remember the intensity they showed around the time of the Memphis game? The defensive effort? That's what they need back.

I think their inside guys would have a field day against our interior defense, based on what I saw this weekend. If our posts get back to playing as they did the majority of the SEC season, we can certainly beat the Cards.

The Cards play excellent half court defense. But they really can't score that easily. They are pretty much the diametric opposite of UT in that respect. Their point guard play is suspect. Edgar Sosa is their best pg and he's seem confused all year. They have two guys that can shoot the trey (Jerry Smith and Andre Mcgee) and one guy who we want to shoot as many treys as possible (Terrence Williams, or twill...he misses them, a lot).

The offense basically runs through Padgett. His backup is Derrick Caracter, who makes at least one bad decision every minute he is in the game. They can't score without Padgett in the game. Period. Louisville is barely a tournament quality team without Padgett. If we get David Padgett in foul trouble, we win.

I actually like our chances against the 'ville. The way they can beat us is with their interior play, as hat alluded to. One guy that is key for them on the interior (in addition to Padgett) is Earl Clark. His play is somewhat similar to T Smith, though I think T Smith is the better of the two. But with both Padgett and Earl Clark in the game, they have the edge on us as far as interior play is concerned. The play of B Dub and Duke is key in this game. B Dub will likely get a lot of minutes, as I think he can do a good job on Padgett.

Terrence Williams is not a shooter, as I've said. But he is an excellent defender and rebounder. We don't have anybody as athletic as twill. He could be a difference maker.

But I do think we can win this game, because we can simply score easier than they can. UL's biggest weakness was exposed at the end of the game against G-town and Pitt: when they need to score, they can't necessarily do it. They don't have a clear go-to guy on the offensive end.

I will post much more about this game if it comes to fruition.

East Region 1st Round Winners: North Carolina, Indiana, Notre Dame, Winthrop, St. Joe's, Louisville, South Alabama, and Tennessee.

Agreed, Butler is a very good team, and their style will slow down South Alabama.

USA is playing Alabama. Butler isn't as good as they were last year.

Unfortunatly, yes. Winthrop always seems to be a team that poses problems for teams in the big dance, I just think that WSU could be too big for them.

I am taking Winthrop in the upset.

I agree that the homecourt for USA is something to think about. Also, the reason I am asking about Winthrop is because I am in the process of picking them in the upset.

Dickens, what are your other upsets, and who are your double digit team(s) to make it to the sweet 16?

Lemme look at the brackets. I hadn't really thought about any of them except the East yet.

Hat, due to me being pissed off I haven't posted on here and don't wont to read through it. What do you think of us being the 4th #2 seed. May as well just swap us with Indiana so we can play UNC in the second round. I know we've played terrible lately but our resume is the best in the land. Do you feel we got screwed?

You can view it that way because we are in the same bracket as the first number 1 seed. But I think it was more about the committee showing us some respect and putting us close to Knoxville.
