The hire Al Golden Thread

If our next coach doesn't come with an NFL pedigree, we will be back on VN with the exact same threads three years from now. NFL experience is our only chance to resurrect TBO, especially in a relatively short span of time.

He is almost finished with his 3rd year at Miami . He has an even 500 record .and this is against ACC competition . He can walk out his front door and reach more recruits on a bullhorn than Dooley could reach traveling the whole state of Tennessee. I think he is Dooley's equal at best .............Thanks but no thanks

I would be slightly underwhelmed given the other names being thrown around. I do think he is a great coach and would likely bring a couple of good recruits with him, possibly swaying a couple of our in state guys that won't commit as well.

After what he's seen at Temple and Miami, Tennessee would seem like paradise to Al Golden.

Good coach who can be credited with saving Temple football by laying the groundwork for returning to the Big East. They were so pathetic in football the Big East kicked them out earlier. Al Golden is the main reason they've gotten themselves back in.

It is not looking good for him at Miami. But that program is a basket case and, with Neven Shapiro's paper trail, looks like a dead man walking with the NCAA. Next-to-impossible to rebuild in a situation like that.

He's one of those quality coaches who has never been given the chance to drive a high-quality ride. All he's gotten is the Pacer or, in Miami, the DeLorean. But if he ever gets a Benz, then he'll take it as far as it can go.

As down as we are now, we are a Mercedes that can fly if the keys are ever given to a quality coach. Golden is one of those.

I don't understand all the Al Golden love. Yes he had a couple good season's at Temple but other than that not much. He's been a yawner at Miami in a fairly weak conference. I realize Miami is in NCAA trouble but heck they got plenty of talent...What am I missing?

I really feel like this guy is vastly overrated. Sure they'v got sanctions, but he still should be winning and competing more at Miami. Let him prove something before we take a chance on this guy.

I hope Golden is way down the list, a few notches above Kirby Smart.

News Flash: Bill Battle is currentlly 10 spots ahead of Golden. To all VN fans - please cease and desist with all coaches who might have a .500 winning record at college football powerhouses such as Temple, Troy, Austin Peay, Murfresboro Community College, Brown, Univ of Northern Illinois, LA Tech, and so on.

And Mr. Hart - please find us loyal Vol fans a proven winner w/NFL experiece

Phenomenal? Only had two decent seasons at Temple---TEMPLE

Yes, Temple, which is historically one of the worst FBS programs. Two straight 8+ win seasons there ain't bad. Also, a heavily depleted Miami team with zero support locally and nationally has the inside track on an ACC title game berth.

he is 5-5 , and that just goes to show you how bad the ACC sux .....no business playing in any title game

Maimi's talent is really down right now. They are playing a ton of true freshmen like we were the past couple of years.

Rumors flying he is a top candidate. I would literally piss my pants I'd be so happy. He will win a National Title in his career. Took the worst D-1A job in America (at the time) and produced wins, NFL starters, and laid a foundation there.

His Miami stint is average, but think of the recruiting problems. Everyone knows they have a huge penalty coming - why play there?

He'd be a great fit here.

Are we talking about the same guy? Al Golden has recruited well, but still can't win with those guys. I'd be furious if we hired this guy. He's the only candidate that's been named that I couldn't talk myself into getting excited about. Surely we wouldn't hire a guy who's failing at a football school like Miami. Surely not...right?

Golden isn't remotely close to a "homerun." If it isn't Gruden, then it's got to be a Petrino, Peterson (pipe dream, I know), etc...

Give me someone who can do more with less, has beaten SEC opponents, someone who wins, all the time - on the football field, while he's sleeping. I want someone who wins while he's taking a ****.

The powers that be wouldn't hire another coach with a losing record after the Dooley experiment. Not gong to happen.

Miami has major problems that cannot be solved by the coach alone. They have institutional and cultural issues that must be fixed before anything changes on the field.

Yeah, I remember when they hired Dooley and everyone wanted to ignore his losing record and focus on the one season where he took La Tech to a bowl game. Golden had two good seasons at Temple (over a much longer span), but that's still not much. And yeah, "it's a bad program", I get it. I remember when everyone was saying the same thing about La Tech. And that's not even considering the mediocrity at Miami. The thing is, I don't want another head coach who has people making excuses for his record before he even sets foot on campus. There are lots of coaches out there with stellar records. Let's hire one of them.

I would be slightly more enthused about this hire as I was when they named CDD as coach... I dropped a couple of F bombs when CDD was announced.
