The hire Al Golden Thread

From reading the pro-Golden comments in this thread, it seems that he is the ideal candidate for those who want to continue the Dooley tradition of thinking up various excuses for why he can't win.

The thing is, there will always be an excuse for failure. Winners don't need excuses.

Bingo. Was going to say the same thing, but you beat me to it.

Why would you take him over Strong? Strong has a better coordinator and HC record and resume and is a better recruiter. Golden has a losing record.

Just not sold on him as a head coach. He's had one good season with Louisville and even that has become suspect with the recent loses. I would rather see another year or two of success from Strong before I became a believer. We obviously don't have that kinda time. I'm not a believer in Golden either, just slightly more than Strong cause he's been a HC longer.

It seems alot of sports media types like Al Golden, but he ges hammered here on VN when his name gets brought up. All I know about him is that he took a football nobody in Temple and made them competitive, and was misled about the Miami situation when he took the job and may want out. Very average year for Miami, but they did beat VT. Just curious as to why most on here are anti-Golden. Give me some solid reasons besides the fact that he's not Gruden. Thanks ya'll.

Temple was in a non AQ conference when he was coaching there. Success at Temple in the MAC =/= Success at Tennessee in the SEC. I don't care what kind of situation he took over, if you're 53rd in recruiting and you're school is in SOUTH FLORIDA, then you're not cut out to be at Tennessee. He's barely going .500 in the ACC, what makes everyone think he could do it in the SEC?

Yea longer and with a worse record. Also Strong has a SEC NC pedigree as DC. But that is just my opinion. I would rather hire a coach that took over a 4-8 team and has no losing records.

I don't know.....just doesn't seem proven enough to out coach Saban, Miles, Richt, Muschamp, Sumlin.....maybe on Franklin and Mullen's level. I don't know anymore....I just feel utter disappointment right now knowing this is the guy that keeps coming up so much...not anywhere close to a big name hire that we are looking for. At least he has won conference games...the one thing Dooley couldn't do....I guess

Hey guys, Canes fan here who's been lurking reading the boards for Gruden info. My family's all UT alums so I have a soft spot for the Vols but I went to Miami so I guess I'm the black sheep.

Anyway, I wanted to give you all an honest appraisal of Coach Golden since I've seen a lot of crap going back and forth about him.

He's a meticulous planner and has a grand vision for the program; either that or he's a snake oil salesman. Golden talks a GREAT game. He's sold numerous top recruits on this plan as well. Miami beat out Florida on NSD for the top CB in the nation - Tracy Howard - last year. This is WITH NCAA sanctions looming. He's a tireless recruiter. I've seen some on this board diss Golden's recruiting prowess, this is one area where he excels. With everyone negative recruiting against miami, thanks to the NCAA taking 2 years to investigate, he's put together some great classes.

He might be loyal to a fault, his DC that he brought from Temple - Mark D'Onofrio has been atrocious. The Miami defense was among the worst in the nation, and Golden sounds like "No'D'Frio" will keep his job. Hopefully this was just youth, but the players were woefully underprepared on the defensive side of the ball this year.

Golden isn't the best game day coach, clock management lacks sometimes; but he's improved from his first year in Miami. He's not a play caller, he's more of an executive; he sets the plan and has his coordinators do the work. Offensive Coordinator Jed Fisch has worked wonders with a receiving corps littered with freshmen.

All-in-all, you need to look at more than record. Miami started 20 different Freshmen and RS Freshmen at various times this year. That's just crazy. Miami was picked to finish 5th in the ACC Coastal pre-season and won the division (but gave up the ACC Champ game with the self-imposed ban). Miami's schedule included Notre Dame, Kansas State and FSU out of conference this year; among the toughest in the country.

Some Canes fans are tired of Golden, say he's just all talk, but others like myself see he has a plan and know that the young kids will only get better. I hope he stays, but part of me worries that he's Miami's version of Ron Zook. A great recruiter who will stock the cupboard for a much better game day coach. That's not a bad thing, and for a program that needs to rebuild (like Miami) a "Ron Zook-type" might be perfect. I just hope he knows how to use the talent he's gathered (unlike Zook).

Thanks guys for letting an outsider read and post in the forum. Oh, and we went after Gruden 2 years ago.... oddly a lot of what I've read on this board is exactly what we went through with Gruden. I'll answer any questions about that in the Gruden thread.

He has a losing record, why in the world would we try and hire another "up and comer" that has a losing record? We just tried that.

One thing I will say about Golden as a recruiter: remember about 10 or so years ago when Virginia was killing it in recruiting and beating us out for 5* players like Ahmad Brooks? Guess who their recruiting coordinator was?

The only reason he turned that Temple program around was by beating teams like Villanova, Buffalo, Akron, Kent St, And several other teams like that...He has not proven anything as a head coach...He is losing at Miami right now with a boatload of talent at his finger tips...He is Dooley 2.0 there is no doubt...You can see it in how he calls the games...Miami fans are praying We hire him....No joke

A friend of mine that works at UT and her husband has ties to UT just wrote the same thing on fb.. She is not the type person to keep up with football.. :-(

I would feel bad for Golden. No one is going to give him a chance. There seems to be a lot of pure hatred towards him and he hasn't even coached a game. I would stay at Miami.
