The hire Al Golden Thread

It seems alot of sports media types like Al Golden, but he ges hammered here on VN when his name gets brought up. All I know about him is that he took a football nobody in Temple and made them competitive, and was misled about the Miami situation when he took the job and may want out. Very average year for Miami, but they did beat VT. Just curious as to why most on here are anti-Golden. Give me some solid reasons besides the fact that he's not Gruden. Thanks ya'll.
Just look up his W L record and keep in mind that is ACC. No way he survives in the SEC

Miami had a defense ranked lower than ours and his winning percentage is 1% higher than Dooley had. Just don't think he fits here.

I never thought we would get gruden but I sure hoped that we would. I'm not really impressed with any of the names to be honest. Strong is in a weak conference. Golden was like you said mediocre this season. Va tech win isn't that impressive considering 5 other teams beat them.

Jimmy Hyams reports this morning the talks with Gruden have broken off. They could not reach agreement. The A list includes, Mike Gundy, Bob Stoops, Al Golden, Jim Mora Jr, and Charlie Strong.

He's reporting talks with Gruden are dead, but still lists Stoops even though Stoops is one of the few that has publicly stated he's happy at OU?

And how many times has he said it's dead now? This is at least the second time he's "announced" it.

I nearly started the EXACT same thread.

I don't know enough about the guy to get too enthralled one way or the other, but I swear I think the majority of the people on here that are so against Golden are that way b/c they saw a few posters say he would be a bad hire...and just followed suit.

Never beat a MAC team with a winning record at Temps. Beat up on the Buffaloes and Akrons of the world. And easily had the best talent in the MAC and never even won a MAC east title/

The guy had two winning seasons at Temple. Just one more than Dooley had at La Tech (and Golden had five years at Temple as opposed to Dooley's three years at LA Tech). He hasn't done anything above average before or since. Has no major sanctions at Miami and still has a worse record than the guy that got fired before him. Would be a horrible, horrible hire and it is distressing that his name keeps getting brought up.

There ya go. All you have to do is go here, look up schedules 2005~2010, and that tells you all you need to know about his "success" at Temple.

Like his % indicates, I'd say he's slightly better than Dooley. Not good enough.

No sir. We are against Golden because he is a proven loser! he boosts a big 46% win record and most of that is some mountain valley conference. I have done my homework and he is another Dooley! We don't need him!

I think most of the problem with Golden is that he can't seem to win games against weak azz ACC opponents, with a huge recruiting "hotbed" right outside his own front door. DO NOT WANT!

You do realize that recruiting hotbed wants none of Miami for its NCAA situation right now. They are about to get hammered badly and Golden should get a pass. He has been handicapped since day 1 there

You do realize that being about 2 steps away from the death penalty will hurt recruiting a bit, which may be what the U is facing once the investigation is complete. Nevin Shapiro ring a bell?

You clicked submit a half second before me with the exact same thought......:)

We don't need a coach with a losing record in college, no matter the situation. Period. Recruits won't be excited by an AL Golden hire.

My guess Golden's biggest problem and why he gets hammered on here so much is because he's not Gruden. Pretty sure 90% of our fan base has put all their chips on the table with Gruden and no one else. For me, I'd take Golden over Kirby Smart any day and probably take him over Strong but none of these guys would make a splash. We need a splash...like major cannon ball splash.

I've a question, I have read several times Al Golden got "snookered" by UM. How is that?
Seems he or his agent did not do their homework.
I personally prefer somone who can see beyond the big paycheck.

Why would you take him over Strong? Strong has a better coordinator and HC record and resume and is a better recruiter. Golden has a losing record.

This. I dont want him because if he didnt know what he was stepping into to he sure as heck won't know what he is stepping into when it comes to the SEC grinder.

I'm not advocating hiring him...

I'm saying the overlying "anti-Golden" sentiment on this board is partly due to people who haven't researched anything about Golden but have developed their opinions after others on this board who have.

From reading the pro-Golden comments in this thread, it seems that he is the ideal candidate for those who want to continue the Dooley tradition of thinking up various excuses for why he can't win.

The thing is, there will always be an excuse for failure. Winners don't need excuses.

Yes, I do realize that impending NCAA sanctions will affect recruiting. However, this is still "The U" we're talking about. How many kids in that area were raised on Miami Football and could probably care less about any NCAA sanctions for a chance to play at the school they were born and raised on? Ohio State has done pretty good recruiting with sanctions in place. USC as well. Seems to me that Shannon didn't exactly leave the cupboard empty and Golden has underperformed in a weak conference.
